We never forget a feisty, peculiar cat like Jake. When he passed ten years ago this week, Gracie joined us. He would have approved because she’s as quirky as he was. Here is a tribute from a few years back.
Cats have a language all their own. There are surprises along the way like when I heard but didn’t recognize Morgan’s hunting cries. I can interpret most of them. I know who is who. Mostly.
Jake – my old, now deceased, cat was the most vocal. He was from the ‘hood…or maybe Jersey or New York. (He sounded like something out of the Rocky franchise or maybe Good Fellas.)
He had a few good lines. For one thing he called me “Cupcake.” I have no idea why. Maybe because I was reading the Stephanie Plum detective series when he was younger. (He read occasionally or maybe he was just putting his scent or hacking a hairball on my books.)
Here are some of his gems:
Yo Cupcake, grab me a tuna juice from the fridge. Can’t move. The chipmunks running Olympic trials out there. Maybe they need a judge. I could use a snack.
(This one to Morgan) Hey Toots, get your nose outta my business. You know I can spray, doncha?
(To Mollie, the first new cat after he was here. She tried to teach him about the birds and bees before we got her spayed. Fortunately he already had his business snipped and wasn’t interested. This was overheard shortly after Morgan joined the crew.) Hey Molls, waddya think of the new kid? Kinda pain in the ass, doncha think?
(To anyone in general) Cool dude has arrived! I can take your presents now. Bring ‘em on.
(To the staff) What? Service on strike around here? I haven’t eaten in over an hour. I’m diabetic. I need my food. Pronto!
(To anyone with a camera) Damn paparazzi! Are you from Cat Fancy? Be sure to get my name right. I am not Morris! Morris is a red cat. I’m a black panther cat. Send the check to my agent. Include Friskie samples and no damn diet stuff either.
(To anyone sitting) Hey yo! You’re in my chair. (Didn’t matter which chair. Whichever one you were in was the one he wanted.)
Aw Jake, may he rest in peace. There aren’t many cats like him.

❤ For all his tough guy ways, he was a loveable lug!

He was. Of all the cats the came into our house, there was only one he didn’t get along with and it was more her than him.

Sounds like my kinda cat.
Speaking of cats, I tried that litter you mentioned, and I like it. Thanks for the tip!

I’m still on the fence about it. It doesn’t clump hard and can fall apart and doesn’t seem to absorb the odor as well as other litters. I like that it’s lightweight and the cats use it.

My cats use it too, and, unlike clay litter, I’m not finding as big a mess all around the litterbox.

Much better from a dust perspective. I was thinking about trying an odor additive. You don’t seem to notice that?

I just started using it a couple days ago and didn’t yesterday but did this morning while I scooped. That’s a problem.

I tried Arm & Hammer Hardscoop and liked it. There is always something though. It’s strongly scented although it dissipates. Love the way it clumps. Easy to clean and no smell. I used it next to the old clay and then the corn litter and only Morgan will use it so that’s a problem. It’s pricey at $32 (autoship) for 16 lbs but it seems to go farther.

Very silky black and he always smelled great. He was meticulous with his grooming.

I love cats with attitude. Sounds like he was a lot of fun.

He did have attitude. Lots of it. He was healthy (mostly) and we were able to manage the diabetes for 9 years.

This post had me laughing all afternoon. So funny!
Have you considered writing a screenplay based on this – kind of a feline Rocky kitty… of course, you would need an Adrian kitty too.
Thanks for brightening up my day – this is hilarious!!!

Thanks but no screenplays! He gave me lots of things to write about. Never a dull moment with him.

What a character Jake was. One of a kind, for sure.

He was. He got along with all my cats but Lacy. She was an adult cat (maybe 6) when he came into the house. She never liked him and he never like her.

“Hey yo! You’re in my chair” reminds me of my “cat friend Carol” whom I’ve mentioned to you through the years. Her husband, an engineer, worked out of state for about five years after getting laid off from GM. He only flew home to NY for the extended Christmas/New Year’s holiday and two weeks in July for the plant shut down. One of Carol’s three cats, I think Dudley, the oldest, liked a certain easy chair and since David was gone for such long periods of time, no one else sat in it and the cat was genuinely miffed whenever David came home to visit. Sometimes David had to wait until the three cats got fed or Dudley used the litter box to sit in his own chair. Putting books, a newspaper, etc. there as a place marker if he, David, left the room did no good. The cat still plopped down and refused to move, glaring at David. 🙂

They take possession of what they like. You know what they say…location, location, location!

Funny – yes, just like the realtor ads. Pets are just as obstinate as humans sometimes!

You really know how to give each cat the fitting dialogue for their personality. Would’ve loved for you to meet my kitty Sneakers to give her some dialogue. She might’ve been the female-Jake. Have a nice weekend.

It is fun to read his special comments… it seems just so him. I didn’t realize how Mollie and Morgan worked into the Sassy Cats with Jake. I went back and did some reading. Love the last photo… he may have been an older cat but he was still handsome and he was feisty… and I loved that he was quirky♥

This post had me cracking up, Jake sounds like such a character! I love the “Yo Cupcake” line, what a legend. Totally making me think of my own cat, who’s currently judging me from the couch while I wait for the carpet cleaners to finish. Cats really do have their own language, and they always make sure we know who’s in charge!

That’s an old picture. Jake is gone 10 years so it’s older than that. The peep is a lot more gray!

He had lots. He wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer but he managed to figure things out eventually. He was an incredible hunter. I saw him jump and knock a bird out of the air. RIP bird. 😦
