Sassy cats – Vet trip and other stuff

Sasha: They tricked me! We went to the vet!

It’s the peep. Sasha needed her rabies shot so we had a field trip to the vet. She sang the song of her people (in stereo) all the way over. She was still screaming as we entered the building. The vet, who was standing nearby said, “Sasha is here.” There were three other well-behaved (that means quiet) cats in the waiting room. Why didn’t I get one of those.

Having people know your cat from blood curling screams is amazing. No amount of comforting would calm her down. Henry, the office ginger cat (who looks a lot like Gus) came over to say hi but she wasn’t having any of it.

An hour later, with an empty pocketbook and frayed nerves we departed. She continued her version of Carmen on the way home. She needs a dental which is scheduled in two weeks. Since Gus also needs one, I decided to kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) and take them together. Maybe she’ll be happier with her bestie. Or maybe medication I’m giving both of them before the trip will help my sanity. I wonder if they have meds for the owner.

The problem with taking both at once is that I use the same carrier (extra-large and with wheels) for both of them (not together). One will have to fit in Gracie’s smaller carrier. I decided to put it out with a comfy bed in it. Didn’t take long for Sasha to take it for a ride. She does indeed fit in it and we’ll use it.

BTW, the good news from the vet is that she lost three pounds since last year bringing her down to a perfect 12 pounds. I don’t know how she did it. Normally I would say don’t look a gift horse in the mouth as she needed to lose weight but now, I’m wondering if something is wrong. Maybe I’ll have them do blood work just to be sure.

This is what besties look like. Gus and Sasha

For those who are wondering how the three cats are doing since Gracie died, they seem to be fine. Better than me. Gracie got along with all of them, but she wasn’t besties. She didn’t hang out with anyone like Gus and Sasha do.

Gus: Mine, mine, mine!

Gus didn’t even do the customary mourning period. He moved into her office window bed the next day. It’s comforting to have an office cat checking over my work, but I still miss Gracie. She had a way of creating havoc on my computer that Gus doesn’t do. In memory of Gracie, Windows did an overnight update that screwed up my computer to the point where I had to call “my guy.” I’m sure Gracie was looking down and laughing.

That’s all for today. Hope you all have a great weekend.

  2. “Sasha’s here!” Reminded me of when Norm entered the bar on Cheers. Funny from this side of course. I remember sweating every time we took our Beagle to the vet, that was not funny.

  3. Yikes! The vet bill from two dentals will take your mind off things. For a minute anyway. Maybe Gracie messed with your computer one last time for fun. She may want to make sure no one forgets her. Losing family is so hard. God bless and good luck with the upcoming vet visits!

    • Neither of them have bad teeth issues (not like Gracie) so I’m hoping for the best. Gus will have an extraction but maybe not Sasha. My vet is going to do both for the price I got for just Gus over a year ago so that’s a win. She will remove a lump that’s on Sasha’s neck too. It feels like it’s embedded in the skin but I’m not sure. I was afraid it may require a cone thing although the incision will be in the neck area. My vet’s exact words were, “No, we avoid cones whenever we can.” Music to my ears. She shouldn’t be able to get at it but she’s a cat so you never know.

  4. You need to have a family member in the vet biz! I’m sorry you had to make a trip so soon after your last sad trip there … tell Sasha and Gus no more chewy or sugary treats going forward!

  5. Here’s hoping the dental visit goes as easily as is possible. It’s never easily with a nervous pet being poked and prodded. My guys may not be able to carry a tune in a basket but the trembling of an 80+ lb. hairy beast is hardly anything to brag about.

    • I’m pretty sure Gus will have an extraction or two but fingers crossed that Sasha is just gingivitis. She’s having a lump removed on her neck and it made sense to combine the two since my vet doesn’t like to do unnecessary anesthesia. I’ve had cats with a back reaction to it. Pricey, oh yes. With Gus’s PU surgery in February and Gracie in October, this has been the year of the cat.

    • Well, there is that. It may be nice for a little while though. She’s definitely going to be cranky when she goes for a dental. She can’t eat in the morning. That’s like me without coffee.

  6. The Marie Callas of cats. You have to respect a girl who voices her opinion.

As far as Gus goes, I think he’s in Gracie’s spot to honor her. Maybe she spoke to him while he was cat napping worried, that you needed a new assistant. Hey, stranger things have happened.

  7. Well having a screamer definitely makes things interesting at the vet. Teddy has a little “pipsqueak” of a meow – for a huge cat he sounds like a kitten. AND he likes all the attention he gets so he’s quiet until he is put on the exam table – then he just wants OFF……..When the doc comes in he settles down and lets him do anything he wants to do to him (sadly that’s not always the case with ME when I try to clean his ears, etc.!). Anyway, vet visits are always “interesting” – I’m glad I only have one to haul to the vet….two has to be a little “taxing” on your sanity!!!!! It takes a long time for a multi-cat household and its’ humans to adjust to a loss – the family dynamic and the house “feel” is just different. It’s tough.

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

  8. Most of the time, vets will do what’s called a pre-op panel (blood) before surgery to make sure the major organs are all good and will process the anesthesia well. You might check with them and see. It’s not the complete blood work package, but it covers all the important organs and would catch anything glaring.

    • That’s what the vet suggested. Gus had bloodwork done in February prior to his PU surgery so he doesn’t need it. Technically because both are under 8, it’s not mandatory but I may do for Sasha. She’s never had it done. Good for a baseline if nothing else.

  10. Hopefully, Sasha will quiet down on your next trip. If you do order bloodwork on her I hope everything comes back fine.
I am so sorry to hear about Gracie. I guess that happened when I was in the hospital. (((Hugs))) to you! ❤️

      • Oh Kate, so hard when they go unexpectedly like that. 😭Our Yorkie died two days before we left for our vacation back in September. She was doing fine and then was puking and two days later she was gone. She died of liver failure, too. Was 14 years old.

        • I’m so sorry. This is the first cat I had with liver failure. At least with kidney disease you can see the symptoms. I missed any signs until it was too late although I don’t think they can do much for liver issues.
