Sassy cats — Goldfish edition

Gracie: Working on horking up a hairball or maybe just kicking the box! That’s Sasha’s tail photobombing.

Gracie here. It was a testy week for the peep. Delayed spring equinox, some planet in the seventh house or just overall wonkiness. She has started to scream “Goldfish! In my next life I’m going to have goldfish instead of cats!”

That may have happened after I did a major barf that covered 3 different surfaces. Or maybe when Sasha ate too fast and did an upchuck on the carpet. Or when Gus dropped a dingleberry (it was in the basement near the litter boxes so what’s the big deal?). Even Morgan, the perfect cat, tossed her cookies this week. The peep especially gets annoyed if the contents of the upchuck are the expensive special diet food that no one likes.

The peep routinely covers her desk so I can’t heave on her keyboard (I only did that once and she wasn’t happy). She has started shrouding our favorite spots in the office. The carpets are easy to clean because she bought the “pet-proof” type but her desk chair is old and hard to clean. Oh yeah, she has to check it before she sits in it so that gets a towel too.

When we hear her scream “Goldfish!” we go scurrying.  Her patience is down to one thin thread. It may affect treat time.

Goldfish aren’t near as much fun as we are. She wouldn’t need all the cleaning supplies and the rolls of paper towels. (She threatens to get supplies delivered by a tractor trailer truck.) Fish give kissy lips behind glass and that’s it. We give concert style yeowls worthy of the best aria. Gus does his best performance at 3 a.m.

Seriously do we look like we are a lot of work?

She’ll get over it. This is the time we shed the most. As soon as we thin down our coats, life will be back to normal (or as normal as we get) and there will be no more screams of “Goldfish!” Maybe. Depends on the hairballs.

All of us overfurred, barfy cats wish you a great weekend.

Author’s note: The peep is thinking about getting those washable carpets (not the bathroom kind) and wondering if they are as wonderful as the company says. If you have any experience you’d like to share she would appreciate it.

  1. I have a Ruggable carpet in the kitchen workspace. It’s a small one (5×3, I think). I’ve washed it multiple times and it’s still looking good. I have a bigger one (6×9) in my living room – have washed it once – still good. However I recently replaced it with a wool carpet I found super cheap on Wayfair (open box sale). My issue with the bigger Ruggables are that the design looks better on smaller rugs – can tend to look pixilated on bigger ones as the designs are printed on, not woven in, and I think they just enlarge the graphics, instead of redesigning for a larger rug. The customer service is fantastic and the rugs hold up well after multiple washings.

    • I’m looking at the smaller ones and the runners so they may be ok. I worry about wool (cat barf!). I have an old Karastan that is wool and it’s more than 30 years old. I’m not using it at this house but other than a little faded, it’s in good shape (even with cat barf).

  2. Love the title. Anything with Edition at the end piques my interest. The trouble with goldfish is, they have a lifespan as long as leftover meatloaf. And who are you kidding? You worried about Gus to the point that even coffee didn’t help. I call that serious. And what’s a little hurl now and then. Clears out those hairballs that one finds around. I remember finding one in my ballet shoe after I slipped it on. Squish. 🙂

These must be fun to write, and your following seems to love them. 🙂

  3. Gracie – what a week you all gave to the Peep. Good thing she only is kidding (I think) when she yells Goldfish. But beware anyway and tame down the barfs if possible. Sorry I can’t contribute re: the carpeting as I am “petless”.

  4. Goldfish can’t scratch the furniture or taste test the chicken when no one’s looking. They don’t knock things off the table to see if they bounce and they don’t steal your spot when you get up for a minute. Maybe you should remind your peep of all the great things you do, Gracie! Don’t worry, she still loves you guys best. I think…

  5. Oh dear. Hope all barfing and upchucks are now behind you.
I did have a washable carpet once that could go ion the washing machine. Big mistake, so definitely agree on the bathroom issue. We have carpet tiles now and they seem to have come up OK with the foam spray stuff, letting it dry for 2 hours and then vacuuming. Sadly the ‘Rug Doctors’ machines are not recommended for carpet tiles, so it was a good job we asked before hiring one again.

    • Keeping floors clean when you have pets, especially 4, is challenging. I vacuum several times a week as it’s shedding season. The barfing comes in cycles and I can’t figure out triggers. Gracie does it a lot but it was a week full of everyone barfing (except the humans). I blame the shedding. Extra hair results in hairballs.

  6. Gracie, a whole lotta barfing going on! Don’t tell me the Friday post is going to have to be renamed The Barfy Cats. Can’t let that happen. I don’t ever remember our cats barfing more in the Spring. Our cats did a whole lotta barfing too. What is it with cats and barfing? You would think there would be a better answer than just hairballs. Thank you for the great weekend wishes… sending some happy weekend wishes right back at you!

  7. So very sorry to hear about the barfing episodes. For being as big as a pony, it seems that Wilson has a sensitive digestive system and I have to limit his time at the water bowl otherwise he’ll upchuck a meal from hours before. I swear the dog thinks he’s a camel and tries to fill both humps.

As for those washable decorative rubs, I’ve heard good things but haven’t tried them. Yet. They aren’t cheap but if they are as good as they say, it might be worth it. A friend has one and she likes hers. Good luck and hopefully everyone’s tummy issues will calm down and you all have an enjoyable weekend.

    • Gracie is better today. No one barfed. I think they mostly do it when I have things to do or am in a hurry! I haven’t pulled the trigger on the rugs because they aren’t cheap. Reviews are mixed but mostly good. At some point, maybe after the bath renovation, I’ll try them. Especially for runners, I’d love to be able to wash them.

  8. It sounds like the peep could use a vacation from you monsters. Barfing all over the place! The shame!

Of course, she would want you all back again after a good nap but you could try to be a little more considerate.

  9. I have a ruggable runner in the dining room. We got it so that the dogs wouldn’t slide out on the hardwood floors as they got older (It’s part of the “racetrack” floor plan). It it nice to be able to wash it, but I also got it because I change it out different covers for different seasons. I don’t think I’d get any ruggable that’s bigger (harder to wash), and sometimes it’s a pain to match up the corners of the rug with the velcro pad underneath (I’m a perfectionist) and you are on your hands and knees a bit, but it grips the floor very well.

    • I would be looking at runners rather than a big area rug that I couldn’t manage! 🙂 Thanks for your feedback. I am thinking of getting one for the front of the vanity after the bath renovation. If that works, I’ll do one in the kitchen. We have hardwood floors and they take a beating in the kitchen especially in the sink-cooking area. We also have an indoor race track. Love to watch them manage a turn. Most turn into a wall smack!

  10. Don’t listen to her, Gracie.

She HAD goldfish at the last house . . . in an outdoor pond . . . that was LOTS of work (when it was time to MJCK IT OUT) . . . plus it was a magnet for HUNGRY raccoons and birds and bears and what not. And the fish didn’t even have NAMES! They just ain’t as purr-sonal as cats.

AND you and your barfing brethren are ensuring that she doesn’t turn into a COUCH POTATO or get BORED by keeping her BUSY!

    Keep up the good work!

  11. Life is a series of trials and tribulations with a dash of good stuff here and there……if you have pets the balance might shift one way or the other! It’s up to us to go with the flow (although the flow of hork and missed litter box deposits can effect our ability to “go”!). I like the look of those washable carpets even though they look kind of “thinnish” to me…..I know some folks who have them outside on their deck/porch/etc. but not inside. They are tempting though. Very.

    • I’d like to get a runner for the kitchen sink area and maybe the bathroom vanity. They aren’t cheap so I’d like to get a solid “I like them” from someone. Cats, sigh. Can’t live with them and definitely can’t live without them. The special diet is the biggest issue here.

      • I know about special diet issues……Teddy absolutely would NOT eat the prescription food our vet wanted him on. No matter what I did to make it “attractive” to him – it just didn’t work. I finally just tried a non-prescription diet food and it worked although he likes me to put extra water in it so it’s more like “soup” or “stew”…..but he eats it and likes it. Cats seem to “stick by their guns” when they decide if they like or don’t like something that’s for sure – frustrating!
