Sassy cats – Zoomies or pets on steroids!

Every pet I’ve ever had the zoomies!

Mollie in the cat tree. Look at what she did to the blanket in the hidey place.

For no (apparent to a human) reason they start to race around the house. There’s no prey — artificial (mousie) or natural (spider or other cat). Just an intense burst of energy almost like a sun flare.

Morgan: Are the zombies gone? Can I come out?

Morgan does it. Most times she will come up with a target and it’s usually a sleeping, unsuspecting cat. She’s not the only one.

We will hear scrambling paws on the floor and the occasional wall bang along with a “yehaw” from the second floor. It could be any one of them.

Morgan: The mechanical bull is not here! Where did they put it?

I checked for mechanical bulls. They have access to Amazon so you never know.

Jake would sail down the stairs and splat into the wall every single time. Do cats get concussions that make them crazy like football players? That would explain a lot!

Right now the house is quiet…..shhh!

  1. Wiccan is an outside cat by preference and she gets the zoomies too but they seem to come when we get a little cool spell and the wind is from the north. I can imagine a cat with zoomies in the house! Love the photos! They should be on a cat calendar.

  2. Ah, the Zoomies! Our cats get them around 11p.m. I think they’re protesting bedtime. Love the photo of Morgan in the sink . . . cruising the counters and living the dream 🙂

  3. There is a time nearly each and every day where you would swear we had a herd of buffalo living upstairs. And that floor is carpeted! Downstairs is all wood–all bets are off for sliding shenanigans not to mention the zombies that are surely hiding under every rug. My three babies are now 5 years old so glad to see they still act crazy like kittens. Helen is 7 but is not interested in running. Or moving very much, honestly, other than to the food bowl…

    • Mine are 3-1/2, 10 and 11. (how did they get to be that old) Each one has their moment. I swear Mollie zooms when she needs to poop; Hazel when she gets a sniff of catnip; and Morgan…well she’s Morgan so all the time. If she were a person the school would want me to medicate her. 🙂

      • Porch dance. We need video!
RC does more of an open the window now rant. (We have to check the screens this weekend – last spring she sagged against one to nap in the fresh breeze and rolled outside. I managed to run out and scoop her up before she realized the possibilities.)

        • There is a 5 second rule. Hazel (bless her heart) fell out of our 2nd floor window that same way. Fortunately she fell into the lilac bush and wasn’t hurt. We got her back inside while she was still in the “what the hell happened” state or Lord knows where she’d be.

  4. I imagined our cats commencing Operation Zoom with thoughts like:

“OMG! I have to be in the kitchen NOW!!!”
“$%^&! I’m NOT supposed to be HERE. I’m meant to be THERE.
Or, like King Julian, “I like to move it, move it!”

  5. Our male cat would do that run down the stairs too fast deal– than slide/smash into the wall. It was funny, but I never thought about if it could cause a concussion. You’re a good cat mom to even consider that.

  6. Mom says here with the 2 purr things – add moi and the pooch to your mix and you have Pet Olympics for the day. We are always zoom – zoom – zooming here/there. It does keep you on your toes, right? Snorts and oinks. XOXO – Bacon

    • You mean at the Thompson Zoo? Our purr things voted down any additional occupants (although they did that before Morgan appeared and they were overruled). Yesterday Morgan spent most of the day yelling at the squirrels who came up to the glass door to talk to her. I’m glad she doesn’t have opposing thumbs or there would have been a squirrel or two in the house. Just for fun though. Not for dining…..

      • Snorts with piggy laughter! Completely understand. If it was up to mom, she would open up the back door to the magical backyard that opens up into woods. There are some awesome anipals out there in the woods. I’ve seen the squirrels, I know there has to be a Bigfoot out there somewhere, I’ve heard a rooster that crows throughout the entire day so much that I want to choke it, other pups and kitties and I think someone has a goat in the hood. It’s full of mystery here. Snorts! XOXO – Bacon
