Hi all! It’s Sasha the magnificent. Crazy week here. We got the smoke from the Canadian fires and it was bad. The peep stayed inside and that makes her cranky. She watched workers next door putting on a new roof and hoped for the best for them. The temperatures were close to 100 with smog that smelled like a damp day old fire.

Nope, not happening this week!

We didn’t feel bad for the squirrel though. He was taunting us again. The peep can always tell when he was here because the window pillows are all askew (Gus told me to use that word — it would impress you!). 

I had a bellyache this week and heaved several times. (Very creative with multiple surfaces!) The peep knew it wasn’t from eating too fast because I slept under the bed and didn’t come out for breakfast. I’m ok now and back on the windowsill waiting for that pesky squirrel to come back. I have to figure out how to open the window so I can get him!

This is what askew looks like. The cushions are usually next to each other without any hangover. Gus kicks them around when the squirrel is outside the window. 

Sending hugs to everyone everywhere affected by the fires in more critical ways than smoke. We worry about the outdoor critters who don’t have a nice house like we do.

  1. So sorry to hear about the smoke hitting your area! We got it here pretty badly too. Not fun! Less fun for Canada, of course. Also sorry to hear about your bellyaches and barfing, Sasha! Let Gus take care of you in between threatening the squirrel :)

  2. Sorry to learn of the belly ache but glad you’re ok now. Yes, the fires throughout North America are alarming. So many people and animals are all being adversely affected. It’s quite sad. We hope the upcoming week is vastly improved on the air quality front.

  4. Lack of air quality is apt to become the new norm as temps rise, storms intensify, and wildfires proliferate. I am finding it harder to be optimistic about the future of this planet. It’s hard to see a viable future through all the smoke.

    Hope the rain washes away the ash to make breathing easier for you and all of nature’s critters.

    Most days I have (at least) slivers of hope that we will turn the tide, but our current leaders are leading us the WRONG WAY. Let’s hope the mid-terms make a difference in our trajectory.

  5. Good Morning, Sasha! I missed this yesterday. My laptop is not charging… may have to get a new one. Your Lady Peep knows what a PIA that is going to be. Hope the smoke situation is better today. We are captive inside too from the blob of rain on our coast that is full of tropical ick. We need the rain so it works. Sorry about your tummy. Your Lady Peep cracked me up over at Teddy’s blog with her comment about sticking to choclate cake… 😊

    • We missed you yesterday too. The peep hates techie issues. Right now we are having one with our Fire Stick. Makes the peeps cranky. We are waiting for rain too and we need it. Yep, chocolate cake — never been a recall. Safe to eat. It the salads that will kill you.

  8. We had one day with the smoke. There was an orange glow on everything. It felt apocalyptic. Sorry you had a tummy ache. I hope you feel better soon. XO

  9. Sasha, hope you are back to 100% again. You ought to invite that squirrel buddy in. He’d like to sit next to you and Gus on the windowsill there and enjoy the A/C and no smoke. The smoke here in SE Michigan is bad and Thursday they said Detroit (12 miles from me) was the worst air quality on the planet. I feel badly for the animals too – they have nowhere to escape it and smoke is especially bad for a bird’s respiratory system – the poor songbirds suffer the most. When we got a canary, we learned all kinds of things affect them due to the way their mouths/throats are made (for singing). We could not open the oven door to cool it, use Teflon pans or a Teflon iron, or use aerosol sprays. It wasn’t like that for our parakeets and we had many through the years.

  11. No smoke here, just hot as hell and rain on top of rain, making it very steamy. We just stay inside in the a/c. I hear it thundering again now. My wildlife consists of some Carolina Wrens that must have a family to feed as I see them flying back and forth to the birdhouse. I had a bunny on the driveway this morning that disappeared into the Iris when I looked out. I saw a deer across the street earlier this year. Plenty of lush grass for them with all this rain. We keep the pets inside, but the cat loves to window shop for critters.

  12. I know what you’re going through with the smoke. It was really bad when I first moved to Alberta Canada. Lots of wildfire smoke in the summer. Now they’re in Ontario, the province I used to live in. I worry about the outdoor critters too.

  13. We had the smoke and gross smell here as well. It seems to finally be lifting. Your fellow animal friends are very wise. The bird feeder and bath were empty during the height of the smoke, and the extended family of your squirrel “friend” were also no where to be found.

  14. Sounds as if Gus is doing a lot of reading. Askew-ly speaking.

    We have smoke here too Sash, but it’s not quite as bad though many people are wearing masks just to be safe.

    Sorry the Peep’s been cranky. Get her some Oreos. They’ll work wonders on her crank.

  15. We are smoky here as well as hot so that means twice the cranky around here as usual. Only one who isn’t complaining is Teddy and he sleeps through everything. We had a noisy couple of days though – people on one side having about 5 HUGE trees cut down from their back yard (healthy trees) and on the other side of us new roof going in. Imagine the noise? Well, it was something to write home about but we ARE home so nobody to write to (except you!). Let’s hope we all can enjoy the weekend. WE DESERVE IT RIGHT?

  20. The smoke is nasty stuff, even if it isn’t nearly as bad here as it probably is closer to the fire itself. My and my asthma are staying inside as much as possible. So sorry Sasha’s been punk. Sick kitty here too. It’s always something.
