A repost of Morgan stories — Morning boxing routines

Editor’s note: Morgan passed in early January. I promised to post some stories from her early days here that make me smile. I hope they make you smile too! this one is from April 13, 2014.

I have often talked about routines for people, especially myself. In our house, we all have routines, cats included.

When Morgan joined our herd of cats last year, she was 9 months old. Although very outgoing she tended to defer to the elder cats although she did try to engage them in play. It took Jake, the 16-year-old cranky cat, a long time to accept her.

All was good as long as she didn’t come near him and if she did, he would wamp her on the head. He didn’t hurt her, just wanted her to stay away from him and his food.

Morgan is now a very confident, out-going adult (sort of) cat although still very playful and active. This is the sweet spot where they don’t bite your toes at 3 a.m. nor do they sleep all day. I am loving it.

Jake, not so much. The two of them have a morning routine. He gets his food in the laundry room and Morgan gets her food by the sliding doors. (All the cats get their food at different spots so they can eat in peace without another cat nudging them aside to “taste” their dish which is all the same.)

As the elder Jake gets fed first. Morgan runs back and forth to the laundry room as I prepare the breakfast feast which doesn’t suit Jake at all. What is this cat doing in his dining room?

Every morning they “box the air” for about 10 seconds or so. I find it hilarious because they rarely make contact as each is sitting on their haunches facing the other.

I have spent the better part of 2 weeks trying to get a video or photos of this daily event but this is the best I could do. As soon as the camera comes out, off they go.

For every good cat picture I take, I have 20 butts, tails and paws without a face. The best time to get a picture is when they are waking up from a nap and don’t realize what’s going on.

Cats! Gotta love ’em!

Here they are in position!

Here they are in position!

Note: No cats were injured during this escapade! Nor did I encourage it. My role was strictly as a photo journalist to document the event!

  1. Soooooo funny. Having been a cat mama for many years, I have seen this boxing match over and over. I had two, (brother and sister) that grew up together. They loved to snuggle together and sleep on the couch…if they could get into position without killing each other first!
