It’s Sasha today. The peep calls me The Sash, Fancy Pantaloons, Smoochy Poochy and of course Bad Cat. I call her crazy cat lady and hurry up. She had a big sad this week. We lost two friends.
Sweet cat Harry passed on. He lived with our friend Lynn. He was adopted the same time Hazel (RIP) was and was fortunate to live a lot longer. He was a nice kitty, around 18 years old in people years so ancient in cat years. We don’t have a picture of him but he was a gray tabby.
We also lost Elsa from Tails Around the Ranch. She was a ninja dog who survived trauma to spend the last part of her life in paradise on earth. We’ve followed this blog for a long time and this is the third pup that we have mourned together.
The peep got all weepy and misses Gracie who died last October unexpectedly. We all miss Gracie (but don’t tell the peep). She did a great job training the peep about rotisserie chicken which included climbing up her legs when she was slicing it.
We’ve had too many losses in the past few months. I gotta go find Gus. I need a hug.
Wishing you all a great weekend with no losses.

Condolences…

I mourn along with you Kate because any pet that gave you love and companionship should be grieved for a life well spent. This is why I cannot get another pet, it’s traumatic when the companion pet is your only family. I have adopted the squirrels as pets as you know, but got a horrible blow on Wednesday when I learned why all my furry friends were missing.
I knew something was wrong when I finally returned to walking on an everyday basis after this crummy icy weather. Instead of 30 – 40 squirrels rushing toward me for peanuts, there were four or five squirrels in total, all cowering behind trees and they wouldn’t come near me. Well, I blamed the weather for the missing squirrels (they froze to death, they starved to death), but why were they afraid of me after a dozen years? I began to think that someone was hurting them, like the woman who walks with a golf club if one comes near her. I told her off (not smart in this age) but why would you do this – they are friendly?
Then I asked a guy who walks all Winter, whether it’s icy or not – he said coyotes crossed the frozen Creek and he saw a pair of Bald Eagles flying overhead daily. All the shoreline trees and bushes were removed last year – there is nowhere for them to make a quick escape. I felt sick about it – still do. Over the course of the last seven days, through extra peanuts and cooing and sweet-talking the remaining squirrels, I’ve convinced them to come over to me again and I saw seven Friday morning. My heart is broken to learn this and they’re not my personal pets, just “adoptees” – nature is cruel.

It’s the circle of life but it is cruel. I once saw a fox take off with one of my squirrels at my last house. I chased him screaming “that’s my squirrel” but alas, he didn’t drop him.

I wouldn’t have wanted to see a fox take off with one of the squirrels in his mouth. I am glad I didn’t see any of the predators grabbing my squirrels – like you, I think of them as “my squirrels”. I had a group of squirrels and birds at the house that I fed every day for years and asked my neighbor if he’d seen them, especially Grady who was as bold and brazen as Parker is/was at the Park. He told me the Cooper’s Hawk perched in the tree across the street and got them all. (And you couldn’t tell me this??) It was right after the pandemic began and he was sitting in his living room watching TV and could see it – he’s a hunter, so this was sport to him no doubt. I’d have quit feeding them and making them sitting ducks. Part of me wishes I had not asked the walker if there were squirrels around all Winter – but, would I rather think they starved or froze to death than were preyed upon? I’ve been asking myself that question since Wednesday.

Dear Sasha,
May I call you Sash? I’m glad you’re there to keep the Peep together. Any time an animal leaves is very sad. I know she misses Gracie, and Hazel and all her other cat-kids who left her. She even misses the frogs at her old pond. Wish they’d call or at least drop a note. She was very attentive to them too. Anyway, keep snuggling with her. Tell Morgan and Gus to get out of that basket and snuggle too.
Nice talkin’ to ya Sash. Lets chat again soon.
Sincerely,
Susannah

We had an emergency cat vet visit a few weeks ago. I noticed Cat was not eating (!!!) about the time my dad called to tell me he had to go to the ER to get his heart shocked back into normal sinus rhythm (he has A-fib but it wasn’t responding to medication). I was supposed to tell my other siblings, but forgot because I was worrying about cat and finally went to vet. So there’s my priorities right there. Cat is fine after $$$$$ tests and injections for inflammation and appetite stimulation.

Sounds like when I took Gracie for x-rays to find out she was constipated. $200 for that!

So sorry to hear about these losses.
Unfortunately, our cherished pets do not live as long as we do. All we can do is love them and do our best to protect them in the time we have with them.

Thank you, Susannah. Sadly my sweet, sassy fierce ninja wasn’t able to recover from the pneumonia. I can only hope she is flying free and bossing around Norman & Sam now. I’ll miss her desperately. She was my muse as well as a special companion.

It was a bad week for pets, absolutely. But I’m glad it wasn’t your pets this time. You had enough challenges in recent months. It’s best if we all take turns with bad days, and not have them all at once.
