Sassy cats – Tuesday, Part 1

Sasha: I think the peep is up to something. She’s been really weird.

Tuesday was the day. Gus and Sasha went to the veterinarian for dental procedures. But the drama really started Monday night.

They couldn’t have food Tuesday morning, so I wanted to be sure they ate well Monday night. My plan was to feed them a second supper around 10 p.m. They found out and the timing didn’t work for them. They snagged a second supper at 8 p.m. They were isolated in the cat room to be sure they didn’t eat a mouse or anything else. This did not make them happy.

Morgan: Where are my buddies?

The drama did not stop with them. Morgan, a very laid-back cat, who isn’t fond of Gus’ occasional head whomps, decided she missed them both. She hooted and howled and carried her blankie around for an hour. This was totally unexpected. I thought she’d enjoy the peace and quiet.

She banged on the cat room door. I almost put her in with them. It was tempting but eventually she settled down and slept.

I got up at 5 a.m. to give Gus and Sasha medication in the hopes of eliminating the Mormon Cat-bernacle Choir on the way to the vet. It was very effective (mostly) with Gus. Not so much Sasha. She was better but still sang. Her rendition of Carmen (yet again) was a little more muted but still at high volume. Occasionally Gus would join in for the chorus.

We made it to the vet – two slightly drugged cats singing (by this time they were into “99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer…”) and two overwrought peeps. Sasha announced herself to everyone (as she always does). Henry, the office cat came over to say hi. She was not happy that she was caged, and he wasn’t. Henry couldn’t fix that so he mooned her and walked away.

Two weary peeps left the vet and headed directly across the street to Starbucks for medication. Then we waited for the call.

  2. I am happy to read that Sasha is much better this morning! Very interesting about Morgan missing them. Not surprising though. I am sure she misses Gracie and then to be alone without Gus and Sasha must have been a strange kind of feeling. I am glad it is behind you, Kate. Maybe it can be a peaceful holiday season for all of you now… fingers crossed.

    • Sasha’s reaction was a surprise. Not sure if it was the anesthesia or mouth discomfort. She wouldn’t let us near her so I couldn’t check to see if her gums were swollen. Hopefully, no trips for a while.

  3. I know this has been traumatic for you and the kitties but I confess, I laughed out loud at the “Mormon Cat-bernacle Choir” reference. That really cracked me up. I know it was early in the day buty coffee doesn’t sound like it could calm your nerves…I might have been tempted with a margarita or three. Hope it went well.

    • That’s how Morgan is. When she broke her leg she had to get the splint rewrapped every week for 11 weeks. They all loved her. They would put decorative things on her bandage like ducks and whales. She didn’t sing on the way either.

  4. You told this so well and the choice of songs they sang. 99 Bottles of beer on the wall is a favorite of mine. I’d sure love to hear their rendition and maybe join in. Ask Sasha if she’d mind. So funny Kate.

As far as Morgan goes. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Works every time. 🙂

    • Morgan is the only one that is easy to take to the vet. Gracie was too. Gus isn’t bad when medicated but he’s so doggone heavy. No more vets this year. We have to check something in 6 months for Sasha but everyone is up to date on 3 year vaccines so we should be good for a while.

  5. It reminds me of so many vet visit. I’m glad there was a pharmacy right across the street. Have you considered hiring an uber to drive the cats and meeting them at the vet? At least you would miss out on most of the singing. Or maybe you have a friend you hate that would do it for you. I would, but I’m sure I’m busy that day.

  6. Oh I do hope Part 2 has some happier STUFF in it……Part 1 made me remember that you occasionally don’t wear your aids when taking the dynamic duo anywhere in the car. Hope the dentals went well but I must say knowing there’s a Part 2 has me on the edge of my office chair!!

    Hugs, Pam
