It’s been a long time since I had a boy cat. Jake was very different from the girls — not better or worse, just different. Mostly Gus isn’t different except for one thing.
All my cats love to knead soft things. Give them a fleece throw and they are in heaven. Gus takes it to a new level. He will knead it for a half hour with is eyes closed and his pelvis thrusting. He doesn’t like to be disturbed as he’s having his moment. He will occasionally bite on the throw as a male would bite the female’s neck during copulation.
He was neutered young so I’m not sure where this is coming from. Jake never did it. Before Mollie was spayed she paraded her private bits with some caterwauling in front of Jake and he was appalled, covering his ears. He was such a prude.
Gus is different. He doesn’t hump things or pester the lady cats so I’m letting him have his moment. Anything that makes him happy is good with me.
The diva insisted that her picture would make a fitting close to this. I’m not sure how it relates at all but cats will be cats.
I’ve never had a cat, so what I’ve not learned from Carol (my cat friend I’ve mentioned to you before), I learn from you. Every time I see your cats napping, I want a nap too – they do look blissful!

As I’ve been away, Gus is a new introduction! How delightful. I will need to go back in your archives and see how it is he’s come into your lives. Very funny story, though. Glad you’re giving him “his moment.” 🙂

I lost Mollie in May due to the worst veterinarian care I’ve ever had. Gus came at the end of July. He’s 3 and really needed a home. He spent 3 years in a shelter so he’s learning how to really be a cat.

Oh no, Kate! I’m so sorry to hear about Mollie. I will go back and read your May posts. 😦 Heartbreaking!

Kate, as you say… as long as he is happy! The two young’uns sleeping peacefully and happy. Makes me feel happy! HAPPY is what it’s all about. We need all the happiness we can get.

I have a male cat who used to do this. He would come into the bathroom when I was on the throne and “hump’ the bathroom rug. I thought he had a thing for me:) Enjoy your boy.

All four of our boys “make the biscuits” but none get “into it” as much as Gus. He looks like my Oscar.

Ah, Salem does this every month after his new copy of Modern Cat magazine comes in the mail.
Sasha is a cutie! Happy Halloween to all!!

Another cat in your tribe? Congratulation human mommy. If I ever get rid of my two, I’m getting out of the cat business.

I doubt I’ll every get out. I enjoy them too much. Many of my older friends have gotten out of the pet business completely so they can travel.

Yes, travel is always a problem with pets. Sometimes we can find a neighbor to feed them but if we have to board them, it gets expensive. Sometimes we can take the dog with us, but not always, another bill for boarding. And that’s not to mention the sky-high vet bills. One of them always needs something.

I have no comment on the…. ummmm…. goings on of your kitties, but I do love the bookended photos of the sleeping beauties (I hope Gus isn’t offended at being called a beauty).

Gus thanks you. He thinks of himself as a handsome stud muffin!

Yep, cats will be cats but males and females are different. Mine have all been kneaders, what I called making biscuits. I miss them all. Yours are adorable.

Great post Kate, and love the individual antics of happy cats. Maggie just used to have all her babies round her (heaven help us if one fell off the bed in the night) and gather them close. Now she just snuggles into me as she used to when she was a pup.

She doesn’t have her babies anymore? Awww….

She does, but she’s showing little, if any interest. We put them on her cushion one day and she was happy to lie with them but didn’t gather them to her as she had in the past. Maybe it’s an age thing and she thinks they’ve all left home.

Trying to find meaning in a cat’s behavior is a fun, but fruitless, endeavor. Think on it too long and you’ll go bonkers. It’s like taking the express bus to crazy town.

One of my cats does a very similar thing. It’s weird, but it isn’t hurting anything so I let him just do whatever. It is weird, but as you say it’s harmless 🙂

Teddy isn’t a humper but sweet Angel Sammy was and seeing as how he was taken to the shelter at 4-5 weeks old that probably was a “missing nursing” reaction. He liked fleece blankets and sweaters (unfortunately on the sweaters). He stopped all of that when he got to be about 13-14 though. Ted is what I call a “happy dancer”….prances in place – no humping or “far away looks” or anything – he’s just happy I think. He did this when we first saw him in the shelter and I fell in love with it and him. Cats are all SO DIFFERENT in many ways which is one reason I LOVE THEM!!!
Hugs, Pam

They are all so different. I’ve had a lot of them and no two were the same. Teddy sounds like a happy cat. Gotta love a happy cat.

Theo has never been much of a knead-er … until the last year or so (he’s 12 now). His favourite knead-ing object is my belly. I’m not amused 😜

Each seeking comfort these days. Maybe he’s just so happy in his new home it triggers something. Great charter observation of Gus who is star of his own story.
RC likes to knead on people just as they are falling asleep – and gets quite irritated if anyone objects – after all she is bestowing favor. (and loose cat hair to any nose close)
You should’ve used those tags!
Have a spooky good Holler-RIng

My other cats do it to some degree but I thought they did it to simulate nursing when they were kittens. The pelvis thrusting is something to see! At first I thought it would be accompanied by the guttural sounds that usually accompany that sort of activity but he’s very quiet about it all.

I alway thought it was the taken too early from mom cat or their current happiness triggers kittenhood joy. Maybe Gus is reliving his wild teen years…with consideration for the household? HAHA Boys can be a puzzle. He is a pretty guy!

He’s only my second man cat so it’s a learning experience. Jake was not like him at all.

Aw, Gus. He’s a teen male. At least his parents are understanding!
I had to give Bat Cat two stuffed animals to satisfy her desire to knead something. Boss Cat, on the other hand, is more into pushing humans and dogs off the bed than making biscuits on them.
I guess different cats have different “kneads!”

Well put! Gracie does it on my back in the middle of the night. It’s quite nice. Morgan does it in her cat bed while sucking on the fleece. Sasha does it on fleece.

Kate, my daughter has many cats and she always talks about their many personalities. Huge belly laugh on biting the female’s neck…….Last time this came to my attention was the “Twilight” series. “Prude”…..’private bits’…..”hump”…..I don’t think my 60 plus year old heart can take all of this. At least until I have had my coffee. A very funny post.😊

You forgot copulation! I should have used all those words as tags! Cats are all different and they really aren’t solitary creatures.
