Sasha the magnificent here. The male peep went down this week. Sick as a dog. (I don’t know what that means but peeps say it.) Lady peep is not good at caretaking. She’s making chicken soup today. That’s her specialty. She’s not so good at the body fluids stuff. She’s hoping whatever it is, isn’t contagious or we are all doomed.
She was able to take two shots of me doing what I do best — napping.
Have a great weekend. They are predicting a nor’easter coming up our coast this weekend so it will be rainy and dreary even if we don’t get the full effect. Find yourself a good spot and nap.

Kate – I follow a blogger with several cats. She just got a new one, a stray. It is totally blind. She asked if anyone had any experience dealing with a special needs animal. I know Gracie and Morgan were each missing an eye, but that didn’t make them special needs cats. I thought I’d pass this post along to you – perhaps you know one of your “cat followers” that might help Linda.

I don’t know anyone with a totally blind cat. Both my cats had good enough vision that you wouldn’t know they only had one eye.

You know I kind of thought that both Gracie and Morgan seemed unaffected by having only one eye. Any missteps (especially resulting in a cast – I think that was Morgan if memory serves me right), was just the result of a bad jump. I thought I’d ask just in case you knew someone.

Oh no, sorry to hear the male upright is ill. We send our best healing sheepdog energy so there’s no interruption to the feeding schedule.

You’re cute as a button Sasha – you make me sleepy seeing you languishing away! I hope you and Gus were on your best behavior since the male peep was sick. Chicken soup hopefully cured him of those ills and aches and pains. Sounds like a stay-at-home weekend with that nor’easter coming your way. We have a nice weekend after last weekend when it poured for two straight days.

Yes, a rainy day gives you a great reason to sleep in. In the Summer, when I still had my garden and took the bus to work in Downtown Detroit, a rainy day was a blessing – I could sleep in as I always hand watered before work, although I always hoped it stopped raining before I had to stand and wait for the bus at the end of my street. Snow was and still is different … I always got out/get out to shovel it before too much more accumulates.

Yes, when I lived alone, I would shovel every few hours so it wasn’t too deep. Worked better for me.

That’s what I do when we have a big snowfall, but I’m not keen on going out and getting soaking wet to do that. Speaking of soaking wet, I hope you are getting through this nor’easter without any issues.

No issues with the rain. Just a few knocked over planters. We need the rain as we are still considered in a drought stage. We had winds Saturday but I haven’t heard about any big damage.

Oh that’s good news – I saw some videos yesterday that looked pretty bad from the nor’easter. We were just considered “moderately dry” this year, unlike last year, because we’ve had quite a few rainfalls, some torrential, all last weekend we had all-day rains. I almost put the hose away today as it was clear and dry. It’s a big deal as my hose reel on wheels broke, so once I take it off the hanger and put it into two plastic tubs in the garage, it’s staying there. Who knows if we get an extended hot spell or not? I worry about the ornamental tree in the front garden. If it dies, it’s the centerpiece of the garden and since everything was planted in 1985, it would be difficult to get something else that wouldn’t be overwhelmed by the rest of the garden.

You could water with a sprinkling can if you had to.

Yes, that’s true – I may still put it away tomorrow – one more nice day until the rain arrives. I have a small garage and have to reconfigure some things to get it in there. For years, when I had my hose reel which I had for 30 years til one day it collapsed barely missing my foot, it overwintered in my neighbor Marge’s garage. She had a one and one-half car garage, so it was great. I could leave it out until we’d have the first frost. I still have my original Swan brand hose I bought in 1985!

Wow. My hoses don’t last that long!

Isn’t that amazing? It is a soft hose and I like that I can pick it up in one hand to flip it around and it doesn’t get tangled up and “backfire” and get me soaking wet. Somewhere downstairs I have the lifetime warranty for it. When I first started gardening, I kept a notebook with the shrubs and plants hangtags pasted in for reference. The nursery where I bought the hose and original hose reel has been out of business for about 25 years, razed and there’s a strip mall that was damaged by the April tornado in our city. Last time I drove by in late August, the pieces of insulation were still hanging from windows, the roof of a Subway fast food place.

I kept (and still to a much lesser degree keep) notes on plants that work and ones that are too much work. It’s helpful when I’m moving things around and what worked in the pond. I also kept detailed notes on the pond itself — water quality, when it was cleaned, plants that I liked. Some water lilies did very well almost overwhelming the pond and others not so much. I still have that information.

We were diligent about our gardens back in the day. You’d have to keep notes re: the pond to keep it healthy for the plants and fish. I had notes on what tonics and supplements to use for the flowers, based on the nursery’s recommendations. They were real big on bone meal for every planting – I remember that.
I ordered a lot of butterfly paraphernalia for the butterfly garden (including shelters for them) from Gardeners Supply. It became my go-to place to shop for garden supplies after Johnny’s Nursery closed. The only purchase I regretted buying from there was the replacement hose reel. It was large, had pneumatic tires which all four went flat within the first Summer and it rusted and fell apart after two years. I left it under the patio roof, so it was not out in the rain and it stayed in Marge’s garage all Winter. I wrote to Gardener’s Supply, which is an employee-owned company, about my dissatisfaction with it and sent pictures and never got a response.

I use Gardener’s Supply for some things too but buy very little gardening tools these day. For one thing, I don’t need them. I must have two of everything there is! :)

Yes, over the years I ended up with two of everything too. The best thing was when they started making hand tools with yellow handles. The wooden ones, I’d temporarily lose under a shrub or plant with lots of leaves.

Yes, I always buy the ones that are neon colors for that reason!

That’s funny, but it works … easy to spot at the end of a long session in the garden or sudden sprinkles that came out of nowhere!

Hi Sash,
Sorry Mr. Peep is under the weather, no pun intended. We’ll all have to stay home if it rains as hard as they say. But you know, they do this. They like scaring the pants off of us. Yeah I know, you don’t wear pants, but you get what I mean. Just now I went to the market to a get some essentials and all the shelves were empty. Not one Oreo, and I went to two places. There was one dented box of Lorna Doones I grabbed, but well, it just won’t be the same.
Chicken soup sounds wonderful. Best medicine. They don’t call it Jewish Penicillin for nothing. See ya Sash. Hug Gus for me. :)

Sasha, you in the basket with your neck all cricked looks like a wake up to headache thing to me. Maybe the sun worked some magic.
Stay safe from the nor’easter!

He’s only slightly better. It’s the in between stage. He gets dizzy when he gets up so he can’t manage a trip to a doc but it’s not serious enough to call for an ambulance. Maybe I’ll share my catnip kicky toy with him.
