Sassy cats – A Gracie update and the wasp

Gracie: Go away. I don’t feel good!

It’s the peep today. Gracie is under the weather. There was extreme barfing around 5 a.m. and she has not recovered yet. She’s not eating breakfast, so her throat probably hurts and her tummy too. It’s days like this that I wish I could help her. She had x-rays last year that only showed constipation. (Yes, $400 for a constipation diagnosis! Gotta love cats!) For a while I was giving her MiraLax but she stopped eating food with it in. She’s a very difficult cat to medicate so it’s difficult to help her. She had a marvelous week up until today. Sigh.

The big news is that the wasp was caught and released to the wild. Over the holiday weekend a wasp got into the house. We have high ceilings so it was out of reach. Everyone but me (the lady peep) was excited. There was talk of spraying bug killer (not in my kitchen!) and other techniques. I wasn’t worried. I knew the days were numbered for that bugger.

The next morning we didn’t see it anywhere but no worries. By late afternoon, three cats were huddled around something on the carpet. Yep, there was the wasp. I scooped him up in a tissue and released him. I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight “Thank you for giving me another day of life!”

The cats were bummed. They had another ten minutes of torture planned. They went to plan B – a nice nap.

Wishing everyone a great weekend.

This is Gus’ idea of a Plan B!

  1. This poor kitty, I’m so sorry to hear that she’s feeling under the weather. It’s really tough when you can’t do much to help your pet. I’m glad to hear that the wasp was released to the wild, I know it must have been a stressful situation. Taking care of our beloved pets can be a challenge, but it’s always worth it in the end. Thank you so much for sharing this story with us!

  2. This is so sad, poor Gracie. I wish I could do something to help her feel better. It’s great that you were able to capture the wasp and release it to the wild. It’s always nice to be able to help animals when we can. I hope Gracie will feel better soon. Thank you for sharing your story, it was very interesting to read!

    • Thanks. She goes through this periodically and I haven’t found a vet that can help her. Much of it is driven by hairballs. She’s on meds and special food but it doesn’t always help.

  3. This is really sad to hear about your cat’s predicament. Poor Gracie! It’s good that you were able to catch the wasp without doing any harm. I’m sure Gracie will be feeling better soon. It’s hard to watch your pet not feeling well. Thank you for sharing your story and giving us a glimpse into your life with Gracie. Thank you to the author for this post.

  4. I save wasps also. But I use double tissue to get them out of the house. I even saved this little stink bug thing that I abhor. But they deserve another day of life. Hope your Gracie feels better soon.

  5. Poor Gracie – can she go back on her rotisserie chicken? Was the skin greasy so it helped, or you had to take the skin off? I had a wasp in the kitchen last year. It was buzzing around in the light. It must have come in on my hair or clothes … gee, before I leave the Park these days I do a goose poop check on the soles of my shoes, a tick check on my socks/shoes/pants … now a wasp check. It’s all too much sometimes.

    • 🙂 ! I was able to dose her good with the appetite stimulant and she ate everything that wasn’t tied down. I also got the MiraLax in her (when she eats, she will eat it in her food) and all is well. No barfs for two days now. Wish it would last.

        • She was good for three days. Had a major hairball today. Gus goes to the vet today for his eye. I can only handle one vet visit at a time so Gracie will have to wait a bit longer.

          • It would be tough taking two cats to the vet on one day – you’d be a nervous wreck. My “cat friend” Carol lost Smudge today, the last of her three cats. He had a tumor on his bladder. He was 15 or 16 years old. And this was a shocker … someone I graduated with has Viral Meningitis and is in a large hospital in Detroit. She contracted it from one of the cats she fosters I’ve never heard of that before. I’m keeping both your cats and you in my thoughts Kate.

            • I’ve never heard of that before and never heard of a cat having it. My cats are indoor only and don’t come in contact with many people so I don’t worry about things like that. They get rabies shots because they are state mandated but they really don’t need those either.

              • I’ve never heard of that either – I wonder if it is rare? Kind of scary. It’s bad enough worrying about handling bird paraphernalia with the Avian Flu. Lots of people foster cats and may think twice about it now. We had another cat hoarder story in the news today. A well-meaning woman adopted several cats of various ages from a shelter and now she has dementia. A friend came to visit the woman and heard mewing – she discovered 35 cats, (including seven litters of kittens ranging from 3 days old to 4 weeks old).

                • OMG! I hope a rescue steps in to help! I doubt that rescuers will be deterred unless there is good scientific evidence. People thought that cats smothered babies back in the day.

                  • Isn’t that amazing? That is the second cat hoarder story we have had recently – at least all the cats and kittens were in good health. The last story had many more cats and it was filthy in the house. I didn’t know that about how people viewed cats. I’ve never really been around them because I am allergic to them.

  6. I’m sorry Gracie isn’t feeling well. You mention it is cyclical… I am hoping she cycles out of it soon. It is such a worry when they feel bad and no cause can be found. It is a shame she won’t eat her food now with the MiraLax. She is a tough one to give meds to. I know how this worries you.

    • The vets just look at me when I tell them this 7 lb. sweet kitty is a spitfire! Last time I tried to pill her, the pill got mushed in her fur and I hat to clean her up. Equally not good.

  7. Sending Gracie purrayers and Power of the Paw that she is better soon. Glad the wasp didn’t sting anyone.

  8. Oh gosh – sorry about Gracie…..she’s dug her heels in about eating – sounds like she just wants to be left alone but that’s hard to do when we are worried about them! Glad you were able to assist that wasp in re-joining Mother Nature in the great outdoors….there’s not much for them to do inside other than drive us NUTS and of course the possible sting out of frustration! Teddy and I are sending some POTP to Gracie………..

    Hugs, Pam

  9. Gee that’s funny, I thought I heard as the wasp (wasp not bee) flew out of sight….thanks you fool, I will be back to sting tonight. Oh poor Gracie. My heart aches for her and you.

  10. Plan B – the nap – is always a good idea. So sorry Gracie is under the weather, and hope she feels better soon. And glad you got the wasp instead of the cats getting it. Getting stung isn’t at all fun, and who knows, one of the cats would be allergic!!

    • Gracie’s health is always a problem. Today she’s not eating and she paws the water dish until she dumps it. On the verge of taking her to the vet again but we’ve been there before and no one seems to know what’s going on. Her regular vet wants her on steroids. That was a definite nope. Can’t get the pill in her.
