Cats and kittens knead soft surfaces including your lap, legs or tummy. No one knows exactly why but it seems to make them happy. All my cats will do it but no one does it like Gracie. She is the “bestest” baker!
She will knead or “make biscuits” as we call them for a long time. She purrs through it all, then takes a nap.
Here is a video of her kneading a fleece throw that covers my legs. She is purring but the camera doesn’t pick up the sound although you can faintly hear the beloved husband playing the guitar in the next room. Gracie hopes that you have something that makes you happy!
Happy groundhog day! We consider this the downward slide to spring!
She is really going to town with her kneading! 😀 It’s funny how some cats really get into it, and others are indifferent.
Theo does it occasionally, but it doesn’t seem to be a *thing* for him.

I have 4 cats and only Gracie goes at it like that. The cats may do for like 30 seconds. Gracie will go the distance.

Well, I made a loaf of sourdough bread today! There was plenty of kneading! Next time I will think of Miss Gracie! 🙂

She will do it for 15 minutes before she settles down for a nap. She’d be willing to help you if you don’t mind a little fur in your bread! 🙂

I love when my guys make biscuits and purr. Just one of the many reasons I will always prefer cats over dogs.

Each has their specialty. Those puppy dogs eyes can kill me although my cats remind me that dogs drool all over the place while they just distribute fur.

Not sure if you’ll want to hear this or not, lol; but that “kneading” action is the same as what kittens (and puppies) do to get their mothers’ milk flowing…

I know that but what they don’t know is why they do it when they are older and to things that will not give food. Some say it’s soothing.

You should get her to do that on your back 😉 My Lazlo (also gray) does that too – as long as I will let him!

She only does it on fleece. Without the fleece throw, she won’t do it to my jeans.

I know. It’s less relaxing when she does it on my butt at 3 a.m.

Nothing to do with your topic… but I wanted to tell you about a guy that I saw at the mall today with his cat. The cat was on a leash but was sitting as calm as could be on his shoulder. Someone picked up their little dog to bump noses with the cat… it just there sat calmly. Zombie cat? Kitty valium? Who knows.

I was at Key West’s Mallory Square a few years back. There was a guy with a dog and a cat and a rat and a bird all together. No fighting. I think the dog was leased but that was it. That’s a miracle!

Gracie is wonderful. And to think, she knows how to make biscuits as well as star in her own video.

As she would say, “she’s the best!”

I think it’s the leftover, reflexive, “happy time” from kneading their mama cat’s teat for milk. If they get a warm, furry surface, they flashback. It’s a compliment. 🙂 Bat Cat always did it on my one teddy bear.

Guys do that at bars too! Flashback you say?

When guys do it at bars, they’re just assholes.

Kittens do it on Mama while they are nursing. Very contented kitten kneading…always wondered if it encourages Mama cat to release milk? Why some adults do it…maybe happy kitten memories? Who knows? But I could hear her purring away. Sweet!! 🙂

I’ve had cats that did it until they died. Perhaps sweet memories.

Kittens for sure do it to encourage milk and I read somewhere that adult cats do this as a self-comforting mechanism. Love !!

Gracie looks like an excellent baker! Our resident best baker is Woodrow. He can go on and on and on…

Gracie does too and she goes into a trance. I’ve checked to make sure no catnip was involved! 🙂

Gracie has definitely got making biscuits down. A Fuzz Face of concentration and contentment. Enjoyed the video. She loves ya, Kate!

I think she loves the fleece. All the cats love fleece and we have a lot of it around here. If the throw wouldn’t have been over my legs she wouldn’t have done it.

I used to have a kneader. She would wake me up in the middle of the night with her loving. I called it passive aggressive kneading because she seemed to knead me when she wanted me to wake up and let her under the covers.

It’s so relaxing! Not just for the cat but sometimes for the human too. I need occasionally. Okay maybe it’s not kneading. Let’s call it making biscuits. Butt biscuits that is. Snorts and rolls with piggy laughter. Happy Friday my friend. XOXO – Bacon

Speaking of butt biscuits, she hopped on the bed at 4 a.m. to take a nap in the bend of my knees. First she kneaded my butt for 5 minutes! Nice and soft!

Too cute! She needs to learn how to do that on your back when you have back pain. Your own massage cat! 🙂

One of our cats likes to do that to my tail! It’s okay while his paws are just in the fluff, but when he reaches the fleshy part it hurts and I move my tail. Then we have a game where he tries to catch my tail as I swish it about.

Not sure about that. It will end in floofy fur in the cake and batter all over. You will have to clean up!
