I won’t grow up!

Don’t wanna grow up! Never!

Sometimes I am amazed at how childish I can be. You know…the eye rolls in back of someone or the dramatics performed where the person can’t exactly see them but has a sense they are going on.

I’m good at that.

I’d like to say I am not proud of those moments but when I pull one off successfully it sure feels good.

Dancing! That is the best part of being a child! Did you ever watch a child when they hear music? They can’t stand still! Me too (only it’s not quite as accepted to watch an older person bouncing around).

I love inane dancing when things go right. Something good happens and I’m dancing all over the house. En pointe! Fan kick! Do-si-do! Seriously.

Once I was doing a routine down the staircase early one work morning. (Staircases are especially theatrical!) There were pirouettes, high kicks and some twirling. I slipped and fell down a flight of steps. (Never do this with fuzzy socks on.) Something was sprained. I could barely walk. Had to call in sick.

My (younger) boss asked what I was doing. As I started to explain (telling the truth is something I shouldn’t do on these occasions) he said, “Never mind. It’s too hard to wrap my head around that.”

At the time I was the head of the Human Resources department at a mid-sized company. Somber job! A lot like an undertaker — moving dead bodies around. (And yes, I did dance in my office but only with the door closed! Do you think they do that at the funeral home?)

I enjoy that spontaneous release of energy. The sparks fly and damn I’m in such a good place that it takes more than cat poop to ruin it.

Perhaps a really bad case of loose, runny cat poop could tame it down, but just a bit.

Sometimes I don’t know when something is weighing on me. Maybe it’s something I have to do that I don’t like doing. (Lord, there are so many things in this category that I can’t list them! You know like anything car-related or cleaning-related or….)

This week I accomplished something that I have needed to do for about a month. I wasn’t procrastinating. It was all about the timing. In a stroke of sheer genius I got an idea that actually worked (I get so many. Most don’t go anywhere but the museum of really stupid ideas). It not only worked but saved me money.

Woo hoo! I like that. It saved time. It’s a new solution. Yay!

This post isn’t about the new idea but my physiological reaction to it. Shoulders pop up (where they should be). I can’t sit still. I am on my feet dancing around (terrifying the cats who don’t understand dancing even though they see it frequently).

My mood changes. I’m almost manic. I AM manic but I like it. Feels so good.

Long may it last!

To quote my friend Peter Pan, “I’ll never grow up!”

  1. Yay for you! Don’t ever grow up. I love to dance around the house too, although I can’t remember when I’ve tried it on the stairs. (Not a good idea.) I’m a little more restrained in public, although It’s strange and sad that there seems to be some kind of unwritten rule against dancing in public and singing along with a good song in the supermarket.

  2. I am a senior citizen… I was having an argument with my mother recently which was going downhill fast… finally she said. well, if you acted like an adult I would treat you like one!
I’m with Peter Pan… growing up is just not enough fun! Oh, my favorite DVD to dance around to is Rod Stewart at the Royal Albert Hall… I don’t think he really ever grew up either….

  3. I love your exuberance! I love dancing, too, but I can’t do it any more because of my “reconstructed foot.” But I dance in my mind ;). Good for you for keeping it up. Listen, I have 5 friends who are my age who are very involved in regional theatre right now, doing one role after another. There is a place for real women in the theatre.

    • Yes! I love it! Just because we’re older doesn’t mean we can’t cut a rug! There was a time I wanted to be a rock star. Oh well, that’s water over the dam.

  4. My mother says I never left high school. I went, graduated, did some college, and then taught in one for 30+ years. Now I love every minute I can spend with grandsons. This is so funny, Kate “the museum of really @*# ideas” and “Do you think they do that at the funeral home?” I’ll be chuckling all day recalling lines like these. Thank you…it’s going to be a great Thursday and then the weekend!

  5. Growing up is so overrated! Maybe that’s why I do community theater. Of course at my advanced age the dancing roles are limited as are my skills.

    • I always thought I would be good in theater. I’ve had some friends do it and they seemed to have fun. Growing up is overrated! People expect you not to be silly.
