Morning boxing routines | For Animal Lovers

I have often talked about routines for people, especially myself. In our house, we all have routines, cats included.

When Morgan joined our herd of cats last year, she was 9 months old. Although very outgoing she tended to defer to the elder cats although she did try to engage them in play. It took Jake, the 16-year-old cranky cat, a long time to accept her.

All was good as long as she didn’t come near him and if she did, he would wamp her on the head. He didn’t hurt her, just wanted her to stay away from him and his food.

Morgan is now a very confident, out-going adult (sort of) cat although still very playful and active. This is the sweet spot where they don’t bite your toes at 3 a.m. nor do they sleep all day. I am loving it.

Jake, not so much. The two of them have a morning routine. He gets his food in the laundry room and Morgan gets her food by the sliding doors. (All the cats get their food at different spots so they can eat in peace without another cat nudging them aside to “taste” their dish which is all the same.)

As the elder Jake gets fed first. Morgan runs back and forth to the laundry room as I prepare the breakfast feast which doesn’t suit Jake at all. What is this cat doing in his dining room?

Every morning they “box the air” for about 10 seconds or so. I find it hilarious because they rarely make contact as each is sitting on their haunches facing the other.

I have spent the better part of 2 weeks trying to get a video or photos of this daily event but this is the best I could do. As soon as the camera comes out, off they go.

For every good cat picture I take, I have 20 asses, tails and paws without a face. The best time to get a picture is when they are waking up from a nap and don’t realize what’s going on.

Cats! Gotta love ’em!

Here they are in position!

Note: No cats were injured during this escapade! Nor did I encourage it. My role was strictly as a photo journalist to document the event!

  1. Ha ha, they look cute boxing! When Mulberry was young, he always jumped on Pippin to play when Pippin came in the room and the bipeds were always telling him to leave Pippin alone. The first time that Mulberry allowed Pippin to walk past him without jumping on him, Pippin jumped on Mulberry for a rough and tumble. The bipeds gave up!

  2. Air boxing. I love it. I have to sit like Snoopy perched on his dog house when our two cats – Jean-Louis and Reggie – are eating just to make sure that each one gets to eat their own food. Ornery kitties sometimes, but lovable always. 😉

  3. I often wonder what Teddy would do if I adopted a brother or sister for him. Dolly was sick for a week when I got Henry. She never did really warm up to him…just tolerated him. Henry loved her and tried very hard to be a good sibling. I was sort of glad Henry died first so Dolly could be a happy only cat again, for a while.

    • Hard to say. Mixed feelings here. Hazel loves Morgan. Mollie loves Hazel and Jake but not so much Morgan, mostly because Morgan is pesty. Jake at this stage just wants to be left alone but he doesn’t bother anyone as long as they don’t pester. I expect when Morgan gets a little more calm, they will all be fine. They do occasionally all sleep on the same single bed. Morgan is the most active cat I’ve ever had. If she were a person we would say she has ADHD and give her meds!

  4. I love that they eat in separate rooms…that made me laugh so hard. They really have their own personalities, and like all siblings boundaries are in order. You can hear Jake yell, stay the fuck outta my closet, ya hear me Morgan? box box

  5. I’d say you did a pretty good job getting those air boxers on film. I would love to watch the morning routine in your house. No wonder you need your Starbucks!

  6. We only have ole T-Bob who turned 18 in January. When daughter lived with us for a while, Salem came with her. Rarely did they (T-Bob and Salem) ever make an appearance together except while watching TV. T-Bob would be in my lap and Salem with daughter.

    • As long as they lived in the same house peacefully, all is good. When Jake was very young I had an old cranky cat that did not like him. Despite the fact that Jake was twice as big and much, much younger, she used to go after him and they would really fight. He gave her a bad bite once and I had to separate them. That was a real pain. I worried that he wouldn’t get along with other cats but it was just her and ironically, she was also all black.
