Sasha here. The peep is taking the day off. She’s picking up new glasses. It will be a hoot because she never likes them initially. She’ll whine about the fit, the color and the fact that she must wear them. What a whiner!

The peep has been trying to switch litter brands and types. She says the clay stuff is too dusty and heavy.

First up was some brown stuff (they called it ground walnut shells). Smelled funny. No one used it. She put some in with the clay so we had to sort of try it. We mostly peed in areas that didn’t have much of it. She finally gave that one up.

Next up was one that was lightweight. (Lifting cat litter is her exercise so what’s up with that?) It was sandy colored. It flew all over the place. Only Morgan used it. The litter room looked like a beach without the ‘niptini bar and eye candy lifeguards.

We are now in the corn cob litter phase. Again, no one took to it by itself (it’s next to the sort of clay mixed with some of the other litters).

Mixed results. When you open it, there is a strong scent. The peep says it’s pine (definitely not corn!) but not in a good way. It dissipates (are you impressed that I, Sasha, empress of the realm, knew that word? It means stinky goes away!). So far only Morgan uses it by itself. She’s mixing some in the old clay box to get us to use it.

She’ll try it again without any clay mixed in and see what happens.  Morgan will pee in anything. That cat is not refined! She’s like a dog — any old hydrant will to! Gus and I are much pickier about our toilet.

  1. Hi, y’all. I’m new around here, my name is Lucky and I live in Colorado Springs. I’m using Pine Litter in the Litter Breeze system now. I’ve got two boxes going and at least I don’t have to schlep heavy litter home from the store. I have it delivered every six months and give each box a new scoop once or twice a week. The urine is supposed to dissolve the litter pieces which are supposed to then sift down into the pan below. The pads in the tray below have to be changed once a week and it runs into money, comparatively speaking, but so far it’s the best I’ve found for us. No litter box is perfect. Years ago I had a life changing back injury and had to have a Litter Robot because no one else would scoop or change litter boxes. The cats seemed to like it. At the time it was $450 and now its probably much more but I’m told the new ones work even better. There’s no perfect solution–I think I’ve tried everything over the years–but it’s worth it to me to keep my fur babies indoors where they (and the birds and squirrels) are safe and live a long healthy life. Happy to be here. Love the organization’s mission!!!

    • Never tried that one. Right now I’m using the corn litter. It’s light enough but doesn’t absorb the smell as well as others. I think about the robot litter boxes but wonder if my cats would use them. It’s $$ just to try them out.

  2. Yes, I’m trying to find a good litter for my new cat as well. That lightweight Tidy Cat stuff is awful, just like you said. It flies and gets tracked everywhere. So I ordered a 40 lb box of A&H. It took two men to get it in the house. Once I put it in the box, I couldn’t move it. Thank goodness my cat is like Morgan and doesn’t care. I’ve not tried the alternate litters. I remember Cat Attract being good, but also expensive. If you come up with a good one, let me know.

    • My go to was A&H (their slide is easy to clean out of the box) and Tidy Cat. I was using a basic Chewy clay but it was so dusty the room the boxes are in got covered in dust. So far I like the corn litter although I’m not sure it absorbs the urine smell although I haven’t used it alone yet. It’s mixed with the old clay. Some litters are very $$$ and I have 3 cats.

  4. Have you tried Slide? In all the years I’ve had kitties, it is the best. Easy to clean and a pretty good oder absorber.

    • Yes, I have used Slide a lot. I like it but it is clay and dusty. At least it doesn’t stick like cement to the box! I’ve been looking for something that isn’t clay as a first choice.

  5. While the litter topic is great fodder for blog posts, I’m sure it’s challenging to keep everyone happy. I guess I’m unrefined…just about any patch of weeds or the side of a tree will do nicely for me.

  7. Sasha – hmm. So you and Gus think Morgan is not refined and I beg to differ with you because just as I was reading this post I thought “what a little angel Morgan is … never finicky or fussy about anything, just rolling with the punches.” Just sayin’.

    • Perhaps if I only had one cat, the dust wouldn’t be so bad. When Gracie passed, I realized how much she was peeing. My litter use dropped considerably. When I recently cleaned the utility room (home of the electrical box and the litter boxes) I needed a hazmat suit! Dust an inch thick!

  11. Sasha, I got new glasses too after having to be very patient… it was hard… with the optical peeps! Hope the Lady Peep is loving her new glasses. That’s a lot of litter experimentation. Hope she finds something that is less dusty and makes the Sassy Cats happy.

    • Glasses did not go well today. I couldn’t see out of them. They sat there dumbfounded. It took 3 people to figure out that they copied the prescription wrong. Worst service ever. Now I have to wait until they fix it. Won’t go there again.

  13. Sasha, you are too funny and don’t miss a thing. And refined regarding your potty preferences. The Peep does try to meet her needs and yours. I guess she buys litter in bulk. Long ago I seem to remember a litter made with newspaper – looked like pellets. I wish the Peep success with her glasses.

    • We are not fans of the newspaper pellets. She tried those when one of us had surgery and the vet didn’t want her to use clay. Glasses were a complete failure. They had to go back!

  15. Good luck with your perfect litter search. Maya just gets us up………………… 3am, 4am, 5am…….most frustrating when she just sniffs the air so we tell her to go back to bed! 6am is OK, but if she is desperate, we get prodded big time! Best to get up than have an accident indoors.

  17. we hope you will find the best litter mix… we used something with clay once for an icy boardwalk… the mess was not from this world , so i understand the prob :p) a happy weekend to you all

  20. Sophie and Jack like Tidy Cats Litter Pellets. They have boxes that have two layers. Pellets in the top part and pads in a drawer under the top. It’s neater than regular litter and easier to keep clean. Have you tried it?

    • I tried it a while back (with other cats). I had a cat with diarrhea and it was a nightmare to clean. It may work now since most poop is solid. I just had a lot of trauma from my last experience.

  21. I am in the same predicament. I used to use the Tidy Cats unscented, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere local anymore and buying litter online is not worth the hassle. I currently have several things going on: pine pellets I get at Tractor Supply, the cheaper store brand litter at TC (I forgot that “low-dust” means anything but in the world of cat litter), and Cat’s Pride brand ZI get at Walmart. It’s a lighter litter but doesn’t fly as much as the Tidy Cats brand does. It’s also unscented, because my cats do not like scented cat litter. So far they like it best, after the comforter in the spare bedroom, that is.

    • I have been so surprised at how many litters are strongly scented. The corn cob one is but seems promising. The lightweight one flies through the air like crazy. I also tried Hardball. It wasn’t bad but $$$. I had been using the Chewy brand but it was really dusty (despite a 99.9% dust free sticker on it).

  22. I, Teddy the Picky, have some “box” issues but generally speaking – I’ll go where nature takes me…..I suppose my FAVE is outside in the leaves/yard trash but I will use my box…..unless I don’t. Yes I’m being vague – I have a degree in “Vague” from the School of Hard Knocks!!!!

    • Cats have a short attention span. They love something for a minute, then move on to something else. Unfortunately the timing is right after I buy a big supply.
