Sassy cats — Waiting for the shoe to drop

It’s all so exhausting!

Gracie here. As we move into the holiday weekend the peep is freaking out. There is always something going on around a holiday and this one is a long one with the weekend included.

Gus serenaded her this morning at 6:30 a.m. with the song of his people. She couldn’t tell if his people were in pain or just hungry. Since Gus never hollers, she went in the her “oh crap, it’s the holiday weekend and a cat is going to get sick” attitude. (Not a good look on her.)

I don’t feel good.

She got up and fed the crew. It was on the early side and I’m not a morning cat so I hung back just long enough to make her crazy. If I don’t eat my food, someone else will. She has to be vigilant. Pick it up, put it down. She knows the drill.

Then the beloved husband delivered the bad news. There is an error code on our heating system. We need to get the HVAC folks out on the last working day before Christmas. Yikes! Could this be the holiday gift? Instead of a sick cat? Gus continues to be weird so we’re not sure. Will there we a 3 hour sit in an emergency vet? Stay tuned.

In the meantime we are wishing you good heat, healthy pets and a fine weekend.

  1. I’m sorry to hear your hubby is sick. There’s a lot going around-Covid, RSV, and a garden variety cold. I hope he has the latter, but they all sound pretty miserable, especially at Christmas. I’m glad Gus is doing ok. Good luck with your patients!

  2. Good Morning, Kate! I am reading in comments that Gus is on the mend! Have to give you a high five for taking notice of that feeling that Gus just wasn’t acting right. Now you can rest easy and enjoy the holiday weekend… fingers crossed. Good that you have heat too!

    • Gus seems to be fine except I need to give him meds which he hates. He also had a yeast infection in his ears which he gets often. One of his most hated things is getting drops in his ears. I have to give him extra scratchies or attention or I can’t catch him for the various meds. He has me over a barrel! I was fortunate to get him in yesterday before life shuts down! On the scale of life we have it a lot better than the war torn countries and I’m appreciating that. I got your card today and it’s so cute. Lawson does wonderful graphics! Thanks.

    • Thanks. We are gearing up for a peaceful, quiet Christmas which is just as we like it. All our social events are before and after so on that day we read books, walk (weather permitting) and revel in the quietness. (Oh yeah, and pray none of the cats get sick! πŸ™‚ )

  3. Well, when it rains it pours. I hope you don’t have to take Gus to the vet and the HVAC people come thru. My high-efficiency furnace used to code all the time and they had me reboot it which usually did the trick, but for some codes that didn’t work, so I had to read the “shorts and longs” of the code to them. They finally figured out the problem about nine years later (and increased the PVC pipe size).

    • We have heat but there is still something going on with the equipment. The repairman and the manufacturer have a difference of opinion on what is causing it. Right now the manufacturer is monitoring our system (I had no idea they could do that!). As long as we have heat I’m ok but it’s disruptive to know that it could go out again in the near future. Gus went to the vet. We have meds for his ailments and he’s feeling chipper today.

      • First off, good news about Gus. I hope you don’t lose heat. I went through that with my brand-new furnace when I had my canary. I was worried the furnace would go out. I had lots of battery-operated wraps for the cage … they finally fixed it. In August 2022 I got a stand-by generator. It kept going offline every time it fired up for its “self-test” (every two weeks) and didn’t work. When I had the fire last year from the downed wire, the generator quit working after 20 minutes – it was cold and I lost food … I told the HVAC company that I wanted a new unit as it had had multiple parts replaced and still did not run a self-tests. I was told “we have to ‘escalate’ with Generac/Honeywell and let them see what is wrong and they will let you participate in the telephone call, all done with a smartphone wirelessly connected to the generator.” I was surprised, but it finally did work and it was fixed thank goodness.

        • Our heat pump went wonky again overnight. We have heat as we can switch to auxiliary heat and that seems to be working. Supposedly it’s being monitored by the manufacturer (it has internet access) and they will come up with a definitive solution. Fortunately the cats can stand temperature dips better than a canary.

          • Well that’s frustrating and I’m glad you have a Plan “B” on a holiday – still frustrating. I am amazed that the manufacturer has that ability, but I guess we shouldn’t be amazed at anything tech these days should we? Yes, cats withstand more than canaries – with climate change, I don’t want to take a chance having a delicate pet anymore (not to mention the loss of a companion pet) so I stay “petless” for now.

    • They never did a blood test on him. Seems like he’s subject to cystitis. He needs a dental and has an ear infection (which didn’t surprise me as he gets them almost continually). When he gets his dental they will do bloodwork prior. His side teeth are getting absorbed by his gums (and the vet said that is a bad thing). It doesn’t seem to bother him but he’s a cat so you never know. Morgan was a new cat after her dental. She must have had mouth pain.

    • We are hanging in. Today is another day. Somethings leveled out but the beloved husband woke up with back spasms and he has no idea why (unless it was a sleeping position). Always something but we are alive!

    • Looks like heating won’t be sorted until next week. Keeping an eye on Gus but he’s on the mend. Such chaos before Christmas. The worst part was getting help today, the last working day before Christmas.

    • Heating system has an issue they haven’t been resolved but we currently have heat. Gus is ok. We have a diagnosis and meds and have to keep an eye on him for a day or so. Can’t believe everything went haywire just before the holiday.

  4. Hope the heat issue is an easy (and inexpensive) one…….and of course hope Gus is OK. This definitely is not a good time for bad stuff to happen (not that there’s a good time for it!!). Here’s wishing everything turns out to be OK and that you have a super happy holiday with a healthy Gus and a healthy heat system!

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy

    • Heating system needs part but we will have heat in the meantime. Gus has cystitis and an ear infection (plus he needs a dental). He gained another pound so he’s a whopping 17 lbs. (He was 12 when adopted as an adult cat.) Vet thinks he’s too happy so he eats! πŸ™‚ Anyhow no more kibble for him. Oy vay! No one here will be happy.

  5. Cats and houses and holidays–I swear they just don’t mix. Good for you being proactive with Gus. hope it’s minor and the error code is soon resolved. We’re supposed to have electricians and contractors here today. Wish us luck.

  6. Perhaps Gus is just reacting to the stress of the peeps? I hope that he is well and that the error code is just a scary reminder to change the filter or something else simple. Beyond that, there shall be no dropping of shoes!

Best wishes for your long holiday weekend and a happy 2024,

    • Not filter change but guy is coming this morning. Yay. Gus is going into vet at 11 just to be sure. I may be neurotic but my cats always get sick on holidays when the emergency vet is both $$ and a long wait. After today hopefully all will be well. I really need to do a post on all the things that have happened during the Christmas holidays over the years. No wonder I’m neurotic.

  7. May everything sort out nicely for you all without a hitch β€” (cats 🐱 are so intuitive and pick up on everything, so that 6th sense sick-y look might have something to do with holiday energy and even the furnace, who knows?) Either way, may it all turn around for good. πŸ™πŸŒŸπŸŽ„β™₯️

    • Hopefully it will all resolve today. I decided not to wait and Gus is going in at 11 for either a UTI or neurotic owner syndrome. Heat guy coming soon. Everything should be smooth sailing. Heat system is under warranty so aside from the vet there shouldn’t be a big bill.
