Random 5 for July 12 – dogs, mailmen, fish, frogs, blogging

What’s it with dogs anyway? – I was waiting in the Starbucks drive-through line (no, I don’t spend half my life there) and the car in front had a dog with his head hanging out the window. He was a large black lab mix and clearly having a great time. He couldn’t wait to take off and feel the wind in his whiskers! I could almost feel that free feeling of no cares in the world! Lucky dog.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night – We normally get our mail around noon. Sometimes later. Sometimes much later but always before 5. The other evening the mailperson was doing the rounds at 9 p.m. I was impressed. Maybe there are a lot of vacations this time of year and with cutbacks well…….you know how it is.

Goodbye sweet friends – I have some horny fish in my small pond that reproduce incessantly. Consequently I was looking for homes for a few of them. My friend had a friend with a pond who needed fish. It was a match made in heaven. I wondered if fish get attached to whatever is swimming next to it. Do you think they are homesick?

Speaking of the pond – The frogs have been active again even with all the deer protection stuff that I put around and on the pond which makes jumping in from the sides more difficult. There has been ribbiting and croaking and belly bumping. I am fairly sure there has been coitus in there too. Obviously I have a very romantic spot.

Cleaning up – When I first started blogging I would fuss with my format a lot. Change this, update that. I haven’t done a good cleaning or anything for that matter for two years. No theme changes or new header pictures. Recently I’ve been working on updating my blogroll. I said goodbye to some friends that I haven’t heard from in many months (or years) to make room for new friends. There is a sadness about saying goodbye but it’s made easier by learning about new bloggers. It’s the ebb and flow.

So how was your week?

  1. I love that you have happy fish.. in love! That deer caught with the “oh crap, I’ve been thwarted” look cracks me up. My week ended on the bestest note when on Friday after three hours of testing and waiting a medical report came back all clear. I am telling you, the world looks all brand new, shiny, and fresh!

  2. How perfect that you needed to cull your pond and someone needed fish. Hopefully the ones you gave away get along with each other 🙂 I want to change a few things on my blog but I’m always afraid of messing things up. And, when I finally have some time I’d rather read and write than perform maintenance. We saw a huge deer walking up Bill’s driveway last tonight. He was eating a little of this and a little of that before heading off into the woods.

  3. I’ve been thinking about tweaking the looks of my blog but I’m terrified that it will all come crashing down around my ears. The photo of your pond reminds me of my bother and sister-in-law’s pond. They have to set up an elaborate contraption every night to keep out the egrets and raccoons.

    • I don’t have egrets and raccoons (thank God!). It gets tiring to put stuff on top and we have bands around it that aren’t attractive at all. Sometimes I wonder what the point is.

  4. When I lived in an apartment on the first floor I could look out the window and see the mailman in his truck reading magazines and drinking coffee and sometimes napping. It was no wonder that we sometimes got our mail after supper.
I have been having a terrible time keeping up with reading. Commenting is really hit or miss these days. I think I am slowing down in my ditzy dotage.

  5. Love that deer shot, caught in action, I hope your pond recovers soon. I love frogs but amorous frogs are very noisy. I guess really there are no other kind. I also have been cleaning up my follows on wordpress I like to connect read posts and hope that the bloggers I choose will drop in to my site every now and again. It is hard keeping up with everyone Kate so a culling does not hurt.

    • It’s been the same deer coming back each night but we’ve done a few more things and she hasn’t been here the last two nights. Here’s hoping she found a better spot. I find that keeping up with WP takes time. I prefer to write when I have the time.

  6. Like Susannah, I love sticking my head out of the window of a car, but pebbles smacking me in the face broke me of the habit. However, doggies seem to be immune to such indignities. I used to see the mailman out late, but now they are even out on Sundays! I know! Those fish have been watching the bunnies too much. I’m beginning to think that your frogs and fish have both been watching bunnies on parade. No need to give me a full page, Kate. I’ll settle for half a page! :O)

    • The good thing about the birds (unless you’re a voyeur) is that you don’t see it happen. With the frog you see it. With the fish you can always tell because there is a group of boy fish following a girl fish all over the pond. At the beginning (I was so naïve) I thought it was a case of bullying and was going to take her out and put her in a glass aquarium for a rest. Ha! Next thing you know there are babies all over the place. We call her the slut fish. I’m sure I have many more females but she is a fantail and sashays around that pool like she owns it.

  7. I can really relate to that lab since I too like to hang my head out the window to get the breeze in my hair, what little I have. Just came back from Starbucks actually.
Love how you moved your fish…you’re really turning into a nature girl, and as far as those horny frogs go, they sure know how to live, don’t they?

  8. If you blow in a dog’s face, he moves away, but in the car, he sticks his head out the window to catch the breeze.

Mail at 9 pm might mean the mail truck broke down . . . or got stuck in line at Starbucks.

I’ve noticed a few new themes being taken for “test drives” this past month. I looked at the 4 year old decor on SLTW and shrugged. Maybe I need to hire an interior decorator?

    • Maybe it has something to do with bad breath? Of course dog’s like noxious odors! I haven’t done anything to my format (although I think about it if that counts). You keep your blogroll updated and I like your fly by widget. Maybe next rainy week.

    • You should have been there a long time ago. Your stories are the best. I thought my family was dysfunctional but we’re normal (sort of) compared to your family. I also love how you name your friends and family (for their privacy of course!)

  9. The dog with its head out of the window was probably waiting for its treats. If we go through Tim Horton’s drive-thru, Ray tries to climb out of my window (he is tethered behind me!) in the excitement of possibly getting a little treat from the server! I don’t suppose Starbucks is much different ……….. and we wouldn’t dare take Ray through a McD’s drive-thru!!!!!!!! 🙂
