Throw Back Tuesday — Mad dogs and crazy people

This post is from 2018 and nothing much has changed. My favorite people have quirks and none of these three extreme examples are in my life!

That’s what I have always attracted. I like people with quirks but after you get to know someone, their quirks become…umm…too quirky. Even for me. Here are some folks I’ve known along the way.

The free spirit – I met up with this old high school classmate ten years after we graduated. He had been a jock and I was not. The high school clique distinction was gone. I had done well in business and he had been in the military. We dated a few times but nothing came of it. He had just come home from a tour of Viet Nam and was eligible for college through a GI program. He was going to become an attorney. (Everyone was going to be an attorney back then. It was during the hippie days.) He considered himself unencumbered by time restraints. Think of it. He’s attending college but refuses to wear a watch. His life is full of time restraints as he needed to attend classes at certain times. (This was way before the internet and cell phones.) He would make me crazy because whenever we were together, he was always asking the time. Wear a damn watch! (BTW he changed courses and became a teacher. I’m guessing he missed too many law classes!)

The health food fanatic – I say that loosely. He believed in healthy eating to the extreme. No red meat. Mostly fruits and vegetables. Programmed eating. He preached it and made you crazy. I was on a boating weekend with friends and he was there. Yikes! He only ordered plain healthy food – fish, no seasonings with boiled potatoes. Plain, plain, plain. The rest of us ordered whatever we wanted. Mostly seafood with the required butter or sauces, salads with dressings, etc. He ate off of everyone else’s plate (but mine – I already had his number!). He had a whole meal of food he considered unhealthy but he didn’t pay for it. I confronted him on it and he said that “tasting” (seriously he was doing more than tasting!) satisfied him so that he didn’t “stray” from his diet. One friend had a fried shrimp meal. There were six shrimp and he ate three. Is that a taste? Stayed away from that dude! Eat my food and I’ll fork your hand so you’ll never play piano again.

“I says what I think” friend – Yep, had one of those too. She felt her strength was to tell you what she thought no matter what. However, she never did it unless you weren’t in earshot. Confrontation comes hard for everyone but sometimes in a friendship you have to tell someone when they hurt your feelings. It’s a give and take. Nope, she didn’t. Sometimes she didn’t talk to you for six months and you had no idea why. When you would learn (through someone else), you would scratch your head because someone else did whatever she wasn’t talking to you about. I call that a gone friend.

Have a story you want to share? You must have had at least one weirdo in your life. If you’re lucky you never married them!

  1. Gosh – looking back is fun isn’t it. So many chances for us to go in different directions and who the heck knows what that could have led to. I think I learned a lot from the “quirkies” I knew back then – but at the time I just often went along with the crowd – thankfully I grew out of that stage. I truly do wonder what became of a lot of those people but probably like I did – they became something/someone they never dreamed they would be!

    Fun flashbacks…………………Hugs, Pam

  2. I have known a few quirky people in my time, but as I’ve gotten older and didn’t want/have to be like the rest of the crowd, I’ve become a bit quirky too (maybe I should say quirkier).

I like your friend who ate healthy, yet sampled from everyone else’s plate for a taste. My Aunt Frances lived with my grandmother for years. She lived in the flat upstairs. She was diabetic and heavyset – she was also a closet eater. My grandmother would tell my mom that Frances would pick at her food over dinner, but go upstairs and eat a whole box of instant potatoes drenched in butter a few hours later.

Whenever we went over to visit them, my mom would bake up a storm before we went. My aunt and grandmother didn’t bake, but they liked their after-dinner ice-cream every night but they looked forward to their treats (as did their neighbors who stopped in two or three times a day). So, my aunt would say “I can only have one cookie” (or bar or brownie, etc.) because of my diabetes. My mom would always offer to bake Frances her own sugar-free treats, but she protested “no, no – really I’m fine, one is plenty.” Now, no one was deliberately counting how many baked goods were left in each Tupperware container the next morning, but suffice it to say, knowing Frances’ M.O. as to closet eating, at least one layer of everything was missing from what was there when we all went to bed the night before. No one ever said “what happened to all the _______?” It was just accepted.

      • I had to threaten Himself with forking his hand in the early days of our romance. He assumed he could pick off my plate. Nuh uh. RUDE. Now I usually end up giving him half of whatever I’ve ordered in a restaurant, because I can’t finish it. While I see him eyeing it up before I get to that point, he doesn’t dare reach for it and I’m happy to offload it when I’ve had my fill. At home, I give him my pork chop bone because he likes to gnaw on it while I don’t like to get food on my face. Which is why I never order ribs in a restaurant, though I love the Greek ones.

  3. Oh my!
Sounds like it’s a very good thing that those people aren’t in your life anymore! Have to wonder if the “healthy eater” guy is still stealing tastes or if he lost fingers yet! I wouldn’t want him grabbing from my plate either!

The one type of person that comes to my mind is the complainer! Every time we got together, it was a litany of complaints that I would hear. Now, if you really have something to complain about, I will have no problem being a listening ear, BUT when it’s the same thing every time, no thank you! It’s too draining on me!
