Random 5 on May 10, 2026 – Mother’s Day, uneventful week, drinks, aches and pains, frost damage

That’s my my mom on the right with my two brothers, her sister and my cousin and my grandmother. Maybe taken in the late 1930s. It was before I was born.

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms! — I’m not a people mom but I have furry critters who depend on me. Unfortunately, they don’t give gifts (hairballs don’t count!). I treat myself occasionally. I deserve it. We all do!

It was a peaceful week. – The good news is that it’s peaceful. The bad news is that it doesn’t give me blog posts. I didn’t trip over any stupid people either and that’s amazing.

Coffee yes!

Trying something new – Starbucks ran a $3 afternoon drink special. I’m a morning coffee person but occasionally I’ll try something new, especially if it’s on special. I had a Toasted Coconut Espresso with ube foam. It was delicious! Most fancy drinks are too sweet for me, but the strong espresso balanced that. The ube foam, (which is made from yams) gave it just a slight touch of sweet. That was Friday. They stopped promoting this drink so I’m not sure if it’s still available. I am the kiss of death. If I like something, it’s gone! (Still yearning for their wonderful s’mores Frappuccino from a decade ago! Marshmallow whipped cream yum!)

Getting freaking old – These days when I get up, I wonder which part will hurt. We are an equal opportunity pain machine here rotating from one part to another. I did yard work early in the week. The next day my left arm was stiff and sore. I couldn’t put pressure on my elbow. That took two days to clear up, then I slept weirdly and now my neck is frozen in one position. I’m like a mummy that must turn their entire upper body from side to side to see. I’m sure when this heals it will be something else. I’m still on the right side of the ground so all is good and I shouldn’t be complaining at all.

Spring’s havoc update! – We had a hard late frost in April which killed off the new growth on my locust trees. There are some green shoots coming out but they look very sad. They look like dead trees with plastic green leaves glued on here and there haphazardly. I had a tree guy out and there is nothing to be done but wait until they recover. He felt confident they would recover but growth will be stunted this year. In the meantime, all the weedy trees in the wooded area made it just fine!

So how was your week?

  1. Happy Mom’s Day, Kate! Mom to all the lucky cats that became Sassy Cats forever. I hope you had a wonderful day.
When I get up I hurt all over… old bones. As I get up it all gets better. Getting up and down off the floor is another thing… and getting in the tub.
I hope your locust trees come back. We had three freezes here and the palms took a beating. It will take time for the palm fronds to drop and grow new. They say nothing can kill green things here in Florida… “just cut them back!” 🙄

  2. Animals that need doctors, dental, feeding, nursing, cleaning up after, leave their toys lying around all the time, and need lots of attention ARE kids! Worse, they are perpetual toddlers who never learn to puke in the toilet. So, you are a mother and I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day!

  3. The weather is pretty crazy … yesterday it got to 72, so the heat spike caused a thunderstorm with high winds and we were supposed to get hail but didn’t – whew! Tonight through tomorrow morning we have a freeze advisory. Years ago when we changed from using plastic bags in the 32-gallon garbage can for yard waste to paper bags, before I knew there was a gizmo you could buy to keep the bag open, I twisted my neck at an awkward angle and messed my neck up. Two co-workers who had neck injuries used a chiropractor and recommended it … by the third appointment within five days, the pain was gone, but I could not get past how he grabbed my head and twisted my neck and the noise it made. Never again!

      • There must be a lot of people with neck and back injuries these days. I wonder if it is because people sit at computer more than ever before. I had frozen shoulder a few years ago because of the way I sit at the table at the laptop. Putting the laptop on a short riser and using a wireless keyboard has helped a lot. I did not opt for PT as my mom had frozen shoulder from using a cane and went through PT and we got the heated packs and did cold therapy on her neck/shoulders and it didn’t help.

  4. Maybe next year they’ll have the toasted coconut espresso with ube foam again for a week or two. Was the foam purple. (Ube is a purple yam.)

One of my Mothers’ Day gifts was a bag of various kinds of pure ground cacao to brew as coffee. I hope it will be good–a little variety for my usual coffee.

  5. My week sucked, but nothing compared with what my wife of 67 years suffered through! She underwent her third skin cancer operation (melanoma) on her temple. They claim they got all the cancer, but they had to graft a section of skin on her shoulder to replace the large amount of skin removed during the procedure. She is a good soldier, however, and today she is recovering nicely with pain and bleeding notably subsided. What a trooper! I envey her tenacity and courage . . . . . .

  6. That is a wonderful family photo…..! Ube foam is a new one on me – sounds like a new type of mattress (tee hee). I have no human kids but Teddy the cat gives me a card every year on Mother’s Day (I suspect my husband helps him shop). I too am at the age where something hurts almost all the time – bruises appear without an injury preceding it – and a solid nights’ sleep is elusive. As some would say though I’m “still on the right side of the dirt” !

    Hugs to you, Pam

  7. I took a couple falls in January and February (1 each month) on pavement while walking the dogs, and I still have a very sore lower back and neck. Made me very aware of why falling isn’t a good idea for those of us of a certain age. Not sure they will go away…my new normal I suppose. Maybe yoga would help.

    • At least our injuries aren’t fatal! Somethings never fully go away. I had hip pain when I was in my 40s. I couldn’t sleep on my right side because of it. I had a course of prednisone for something else and the hip pain went away and never came back. Weird!
