Random 5 for January 11, 2026 – Loss, credit card hacking, dying appliances, health, weather

Morgan and me a while back

It’s been a tough week here – We lost our cat Morgan to something the vets couldn’t pinpoint, therefore couldn’t help. The specialists required were all on Christmas vacation. The response from the blogging community has been epic. We felt supported and thank you all for your kind words. Grieving is a solitary activity but it’s great to have people on the sidelines cheering you on.

As if that wasn’t bad enough – While I was at the emergency veterinary center (for hours!) my phone started to ping. I got notifications from my credit card company that my card had been hacked and there were bogus charges coming in. Really? Kick a person when they are at their most vulnerable. My credit card company was wonderful. It’s all taken care of, but I really didn’t need that.

Then the vacuum cleaner said sayonara – It’s ten years old so I got my money’s worth out of it but why not save some bad news for next week? We have replaced it and all is clean again.

This is my brother from a few years back. He looks the same with a bit more gray.

A bright spot – My brother, who also had a health crisis over the holidays, is doing well. He’s back to being a sprite, bouncy 95-year-old. He can play golf in the spring (a big concern for him). Funny story – he had a pacemaker implanted. The doc told him the battery would last 13 years. He asked if he’ll have to come back to get it replaced. Gotta love his optimism. Actually, I’d bet that he will outlive that device!

Mother Nature felt sorry for me – In a rare move, the weather was unseasonably warm. Almost pleasant. There were patches of sunshine (this is our cloudiest time of year). Overall, it didn’t make up for all the bad stuff going on but I appreciated her attempt to comfort me.

So how was your week?

  1. I’m so sorry all this hit you at the beginning of a new year. Losing Morgan should have been enough for one week. I find it upsetting when something (like your vacuum cleaner) wears out. I don’t know why I expect my appliances to just keep on working.

I’m glad your brother is doing well. And good weather never hurts.

This week I’ve been recovering from having my kids, grandkids, and great grandkids here for over a week. Even fun can be tiring.

  2. That was a bad week. I hope 2026 starts getting better for you. My mom got a new phone the other day with a 3 yr plan and she asked what happens if she dies. I wish she had your brother’s optimism.

  3. Credit card hacks are the pits, and it happened to me a few years ago, but the company fixed it all and I quickly got a new card. I guess its almost routine for them, sadly enough.

My sister has a pacemaker, and her lasted for 16 years, and they told her to get it replaced even though it was still going well.

Glad your brother is doing so much better.

I hope you have a nice quiet week or even longer…

  4. When it rains, it pours. In September I had to say goodbye to my feral kitty Mo, I found out my kitty Mudpie is diabetic in November, lost my Dad in December, and just this week found out I likely need to replace my only 7 year old furnace.

  5. What an awful week – there’s no better way to describe it. I like the photo of you and Morgan – very sweet and I like Ingrid’s tribute to Morgan. It’s very touching. Years ago I had a credit card issue when we still got a carbon copy of a credit card purchase. I always asked for the receipt in my hand, not in the bag, so it didn’t get lost, but some unscrupulous person got hold of the Visa credit card number, etc. and ordered items from QVC Home Shopping Network for a hefty amount – I can’t remember the amount now – maybe $900.00. My credit card company was also nice about it and since I never had a balance, they issued a new card and I paid nothing, but they wouldn’t divulge the person’s name, except to say they lived in California due to privacy laws! Go figure! Your brother has a good attitude – talk about positive thinking!

  6. I’m so sorry that some sucky human decided that your credit card was from them to use. That’s bad at any time, but it’s extra bad when you were already dealing with such sadness. I’m glad the card company was able to quickly fix things for you. I’m glad that Mother Nature was able to wrap you in a bit of warmth and comfort. You deserve more of that.

  7. I hope this is a kinder week. It’s just not right without Morgan🩶 I am sorry Gus and Sasha are confused. Still sending hugs and healing thoughts. I am doing a happy dance that your brother is doing so well. They are doing amazing things with pacemakers… it puts a lot of hope out there for those of us who have misbehaving hearts. Mother Nature showing up with some sunny weather was a gift for you… a much needed one❤️

  8. Good grief……like you said – it’s just not fair to be hit with ISSUES when you’re already “down”! Glad you have everything straightened out. What is that old saying about things happening in threes? I hope you have smooth sailing (and more decent weather) because heaven knows YOU DESERVE IT!!!!

    Hugs, Pam

  9. Ugh on the credit card, especially the timing. I’m glad you feel supported in such rough times. We finally have some sun again out here. So my house is 56 degrees in the morning, but it eventually warms up to 80 on our south-facing patio. The cat is under the covers and refuses to get up until 11 AM

  10. A credit card hack? Oh for heaven’s sake. So very sorry, Kate. When it rains it pours especially when you don’t need that kind of moisture. Continuing to send loving thoughts of comfort. I know what you’re experiencing on the loss of a special pet…as I’ve learned, grief is love with no place to go. Know Blogville is embracing you with tender comfort. ❤️‍🩹

  11. Sorry to hear of Morgan’s passing. Never underestimate the hackers because they are truly gifted. Now, if they’d only get jobs and stop stealing from the rest of us. So happy to hear your brother is doing well, and if he’s playing golf at 95, I think he will live to see that battery changed. Hope you have a good week!
