We took our manly cat Gus to the vet for surgery today. He was scheduled for a 7:15 a.m. drop off with no food after midnight. Before I went to bed, I picked him up to isolate him in our “cat room” so there would be no chance of him finding a mouse or something else to eat. There was a surprise. Sasha was already sleeping in the cat room so she hunkered down with him overnight.
We are early risers, but the beloved husband was afraid that we would oversleep. We are both up multiple times during the night but I humored him by setting my old radio alarm clock.
I can’t remember the last time I used the alarm feature. When I worked, I woke up naturally and didn’t need an alarm.
It took me a half hour to figure out how to set it. It has all sorts of fancy settings but there was no obvious “up and down” button to set the alarm time. Somehow, I did it but I’m not sure how. Duh! I should have asked Alexa to wake us up! Clock radios are so old school!
Right on schedule, I was up for my pee break at 3 a.m. and never fell asleep. I turned the alarm off. Gus needed a pill at 5 a.m. to calm him. Not a problem. He was groggy at the time because even Gus doesn’t get up that early. (Sasha is a different story. She thinks there should be a 3 a.m. feeding and has ordered picket signs that say so.)
Tuesday we had a snowstorm. The news said it was around 9 to 10 inches. By afternoon the sun came out and melted much of it. This morning the roads were clear and dry. Crisis averted.
After I dropped Gus off, my cell phone crashed. That was the number I gave for notification. I also couldn’t order my mocha on the app. I had to order it at the counter like a peasant! By the time I got home, whatever was going on with the cell stopped and it’s working again.
Despite the weather, cell phone crashes and oh yes, Gus had the poops last night, all went well. If he does okay overnight, he’ll be able to come home tomorrow (with a cone around his neck).
There will be demands for snackies and scritches. I will pay for the indignities suffered. Sasha will fluff her tail at him and demand to know where he’s been and why he smells funny. They grays will say “whatev dude!” If we’re lucky, life will return to normal or as close to it as we get.

Hope it all went well-I’ve been sick since the 14th and offline. Have my fingers crossed the procedure will give your handsome man-cat relief and his dignity back.

All went well (I think). Gus is home and seems to be doing well. He’s been a very good cat. He is sequestered in a room and I suspect (between massive naps) lonely. When I go in to spend time with him (some cone free time) he likes to spend it in my lap. Sweet kitty.

Aww, glad to hear this positive news. We’ll continue to send ‘pawsitive’ healing energy his way. How long must he be sequestered?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’ll sequester until he poops and maybe until the meds are done which is 7 days. I don’t want to chase him around trying to medicate him. The cone is 14 days but he can come out with the cone on (although it totally freaked Morgan out).

He was glad to get home. Climbed right up on my lap for scratchies. He’s very active. I’m surprised. He’s like 26 hours out of surgery.

And did everything work out? Waiting for an update… (I hope it’s not in the comments somewhere that I didn’t read. There are a lot!).

Everything went well. He’s home now and pretty active. Hope his recovery is quick. Neither of us are liking that cone thing.

Our dogs always hate the cones, so much I usually give up and cross my fingers!

I bought 3 soft ones. I’ll give him a day or two with the rigid one and then we’ll start to experiment. He can’t eat without getting it all over the cone. Then the cone hits his bed and other things and everything is full of food. I had to clean up. I’m going to give him “food time” and then pick it back up so I can keep the room clean. The vet said 2 weeks for the cone. I don’t usually use them at all but in this case, the surgical area is tender and he could do damage.

TWO WEEKS! I don’t envy you.

Me too. I was talking to one of the receptionists at the vet. I told her I had never heard of this surgery until now. She said her cat had it 5 years ago and it changed his life. No more blockages. I hope Gus has the same results.

Rough day. I hope he heals quickly and Sasha understands it was rough and comforts him. Fingers crossed.

I hope so too. Rough day all around.

Hope Gus is going to recover quickly and will be cooperative when it comes to THE DREADED CONE. The softer ones might do the trick – good thing you have a variety of them for the trial and error phase ahead! Sending good vibes for you AND for Gus…..
Hugs, Pam

Thanks. I’m hoping this vet has “cat” sized cones. The one they put on Gracie did not let her eat at all. (Then they wondered why she didn’t eat!). She only had a dental so I took the damn think off as soon as we got home. I’ve never used a cone for a dental. To be honest (and age myself), back in the day, they didn’t use cones for anything even a spay. I had one cat who took out her own stitches. The vet wasn’t upset. He said they sometimes do that and it all healed nicely. For this particular surgery, I have to agree that he shouldn’t be licking it. He’s a chonker so reaching back there is a challenge. He doesn’t need a huge cone, just something to make him less flexible. I expect today he will still be druggy.

that was super nice from saha… we hope everything is ok with your Gus and you can pick him up. I have such a “youareawakeletseat” guy too… he thinks as soon as I leave the bed it is breakfast time… LOL

I was thinking about Gus today and hoping he does well with his surgery. I hope Sasha isn’t too hard on him… he needs her cuddles.

He will. I will keep him in a room so I can more easily give him his meds for a few days and I’m hoping she occasionally joins him there for company.

I’m glad to hear that Gus didn’t escape into the night and made it to his surgery on time. I hope you sleep much better tonight and he is doing well and can come home tomorrow. Hugs to all. Tell Sasha that he is going to smell funny but she should know that she loves him anyway.
9-10 inches? I complained about our 4 but it was mostly melted by late afternoon and gone the next morning. That’s really all of the white stuff we’ve had so far this winter.

According to the news, we’ve had 19 inches so far this winter. Most of it was small amounts. Even this one, with the warm temps and sun shining, a lot of it was gone the same day. We are having a cold snap now so nothing will melt for a few days. Typical yukky February weather. Waiting to hear how Gus did overnight. We miss him. He is a good cat. Not a lot of drama (we have Sasha for that!).

For some reason I stopped getting your posts. I have re-followed you so hopefully I will get your posts again. Sorry to hear Gus had surgery. Good to hear he is ok.

He was having urinary blockages. No stones or bacteria, it would just close causing pain and inability to urinate. Always an emergency. This surgery shortened his urethra and widened it. The vet said this would solve the problem.

I don’t have an iPhone. It’s a Samsung. The first few days may be tough but the only way to get to the other side is to go through it.

I have some sense of relief but bringing him home tomorrow will be another step. Hopefully he doesn’t fight the cone thing. I have 3 others to try if the one from the vet is too rigid or uncomfortable.

It is a tense day and tomorrow will be too. I’m not a fan of cones. I already bought three softer versions and I’m hoping one of them will work better than the hard plastic the vets use.

I use my cell phone for the morning alarm, but I still have that digital clock radio on my dresser that I use to see the time in the middle of the night (for those bathroom trips). Best wishes and smooth recovery to Gus.
