Sassy cats – The purple unicorns were back

They pulled my teefs!

It’s the peep. Morgan had her dental this week. What was described as a “mild” dental turned out to be six extractions. She had a lot of loose teeth mostly on her right upper side.

Although the vet said she would cut back on the pain medications since she reacted so badly last time, Morgan still had a reaction. She was hyper and wouldn’t settle down. She would spin around, dance and rub her mouth. She had wild eyes!

I had bought her mousse-like cat food and she ate that but not a lot. We went through three days of “unicorns” before she settled down. (She is NEVER getting that med again. Prior to that the vet used to give a liquid to squirt in their mouth for pain. She said this was easier. It wasn’t. It’s never easy to watch your cat act crazy.)

I kept her in the cat room overnight but even after I opened the door, she didn’t leave. She stayed in there for three days rubbing her face (which appeared to be itchy) on anything she could reach.

Last night she came downstairs to visit for the first time. She didn’t stay but did snag a treat before going back up. She has figured out how to eat a hard treat with tender gums. Good sign.

She’s better this morning but I’m yearning for my old cat back. The one that sleeps on the guest bed and stomps on me when she wants attention.

Funny story of the week – Gracie is a small cat at seven pounds. All the rest are over ten. Gracie has a small carrier while the rest go to the vet in a large one on wheels like a piece of luggage. I had the large one out and Gracie thought it was the coolest thing. She slept in it for two days not knowing it was the “large size” portal to hell.

After we all recover from this, I will start thinking about Gus. He may need a dental too. He is a large cat to handle so it won’t be easy. I’m already dreading it.

  4. I’m sorry to hear about the return of those damn purple unicorns. I hope that Morgan is feeling much better now. As far as I’m concerned, it takes at least two people to give your cat liquid medicine unless you can hide it in food. Eventually that doesn’t work anymore. Still, I wouldn’t enjoy watching my poor baby helplessly rub at her face and try to escape the unicorns.

    1. She was mostly back to normal by Friday. She started eating her regular wet food and even managed a hard treat. I have to recover before I even think about Gus.

  5. Oh wow – just like Gracie, multiple extractions. Poor Morgan, I hope the side effects of the medicine has completely left her system. I don’t blame you for not wanting the medicine to be used again.

      1. That’s good Kate. I got behind in Reader … had some stuff going on at the house … a “peoply week” for me. I have a critter in a hole and long burrow next to my house foundation and I have a wildlife removal service coming tomorrow to set a trap and bait it. Great. Just what I need. Then I was closing the garage door and it stuck when a cable broke – had to have an emergency repair. I need a dog – maybe the creature in the backyard would not have made that hole/burrow. My neighbor has two of them. He says it is a groundhog or a skunk. I do not live in a rural area.

          1. Did you set a trap? I hope that it is a groundhog (not a skunk or rat – shudder). I sent my handyman the pic of the burrow and that’s what he thinks it is. He wanted to set a trap and bait it with people food, but I didn’t like inviting other critters to dine on seeds, peanut butter, corn and cantaloupe (of all things), so I’m hoping this guy can use professional bait and get him/her quickly. I also hope it is one … $75.00 for each critter removed.

            1. No, I named him and let him be. He climbed my peach trees which I eventually took out because ALL the critters were eating the peaches and I wasn’t getting any!

              1. Oh for goodness sake – the guy told me they also love pears. He baited in the burrow and inside the cage on the cement patio and called it “groundhog cocaine” as they can’t resist this treat. He will release it in a wooded area five miles from here. I learned a lot about groundhogs this morning.

                  1. Got a poor opossum in the trap last night – not great as I had to pay for it to be taken and released and he had no more traps, so he has to return tomorrow to re-bait and set the trap up. ‘Possum was not a happy camper with me, no more than I was with it.

                    2. Yes, I would have hung on to the possum, especially for the ticks and bugs, but worried it would go into the trap again, though I think it would be smarter than to do it twice. Guy baited again, this time with cantaloupe in/around the trap. I checked it later, but nothing yet. Now we are having warm weather coming up – the cantaloupe won’t be looking great out there … it already had flies sitting on it.

    1. She’s doing much better today. Eating up a storm, making up for lost time. Last night she went to the basement for rodent duty. Fortunately (for all of us), she didn’t find any.

  9. I have vet anxiety for certain pets. Sometimes it’s worry over a new vet, sometimes it’s PTSD from the previous vet, and sometimes I just worry about how to get the cat in the carrier. So much easier when you have a dog who loves everyone at the vet and thinks of it as a treat dispensary! I’m anxious for Gus already.

    1. Yes I share that. My old cat Mollie was sensitive to every medication she ever received. It would take her forever to recover. This is the first surgery Morgan has had (with me — her eye and spaying were done by the rescue). She’s such an easy going cat that I wasn’t expecting this.

  10. Aww. Poor Morgan. We clean Maya’s teeth which is quite a feat. At least she chews on hide chews and carrots, which are supposed to be good for keeping teeth clean. Maggie never chewed hide, so it was a full dental job on her three times I think and she lost two, one of which fell out when the vet touched it! Barney on the other hand ate hide chews every day and at his last check up before we lost him (he would have been 10 in the June), the vet said he had the teeth of a two year old.

  12. Yikes….six teeth is a lot – poor Morgan….but sounds like she’s making a come back. Funny Gracie thought the “vet-wagon” was a nice spot for a snooze. But if you think about it – it’s enclosed, dark and quiet in there (when it’s not at the vet with a screaming cat in it of course!).

  13. Poor Morgan! Poor Peep! Is it common for cats to have dental issues and get extractions? I don’t remember any of our cats needing that. I wonder if modern processed cat food is lacking some nutrient? I hope Morgan continues to improve.

    1. It is typical for a cat to get a dental by age 6 so at 12, Morgan is doing well. Jake lost most of his teeth by himself. They are a lot like people. They don’t brush or floss so their teeth do not last a lifetime (or at least the lifetime they have living indoors with healthcare). I remember when I was a kid, it seemed like anyone over 60 was toothless!

  15. Oh Morgan. I am so happy to hear that she is coming around. Kate, I hope you get stomped on very soon… a sure sign she is the Old Morgan you know… just with 6 less teefs. Poor Baby.
    I am feeling bad for you and Gus already!
    I do think that is funny about Gracie and the Not Known to Her portal to hell.

    1. I would love a peaceful weekend. This week wasn’t peaceful at all. Full of worry and anxiety even though a dental isn’t life threatening. Gracie has been great this week. She’s normally a picky eater and gives me a hard time. (Put her food down, pick it up so none of the other cats eat it, put it back down, pick it back up.) However…this week she ate everything I gave her (including regular cat food and not rotisserie chicken). She cleaned her plate. She must have sensed my lack of tolerance for her nonsense.

      1. Poor kitty girl! It breaks my heart that cats do such a solid job of hiding their pain. Louie the ginger kitty died with lymphoma. I didn’t realize he was sick until his very last day, the day he stopped eating. I want to cry just thinking about it.

        1. I get it. I took Hazel to the emergency vet (weekends or holidays are when my pets get sick) because I thought she was struggling with a nasty hairball. She had a huge tumor on her lungs and was having trouble breathing. I came home without a cat. Had I known, I would have let her eat anything she wanted instead of keeping her on a diet. Makes me sad too.

    1. I’m not fond of it either. My husband had a wisdom tooth pulled a few months back and he had very little discomfort. Hopefully that’s how it will be for her.

  21. Poor Morgan. I also had major dental work this week (that was a bigger struggle for me than ever before). I truly would have liked to have borrowed her meds. Purple unicorns would have been welcomed in my world.
    I am glad that she is recovering and even snagged a hard treat.

  24. My Gracie uses her carrier as a hideaway on the top shelf. She watches me work. She apparently doesn’t associate it with vet trauma – she associates it with the safe ride back home!

  25. Poor Morgan. I’m glad she’s feeling better. My Gracie is having a dental today and I know it will involve extractions. She has really crappy teeth. She was seriously pissed off this morning when her breakfast was skipped!

    1. They really don’t like the prep. I have to keep Morgan (or whoever is going in) confined to a room to be sure they don’t eat a mouse, bug or find some kibble on the floor. I always tell them that they are lucky they don’t get colonoscopies!
