That was short lived!

For the holidays I bought myself a new coffee machine that makes wonderful espresso and a milk frother. I love good coffee which is hard to find here in the states. Full bodied without the bitter aftertaste is what I look for. Something that stands up to anything you pair it with. Okay, I’m a little OCD about my coffee but it comes from years of drinking brown dishwater at the office.

The first month I was in love. So much so that I drank more than I should have. Technically speaking, coffee isn’t good for my gut so my days of drinking it after dinner or too frequently are over. Morning is best with maybe (and that’s a big maybe) an afternoon delight with a robust brew. (No not sex! Just the coffee! Maybe with a brownie!)

After one month, the frother stopped frothing. I didn’t do anything different. Same stuff, same technique but no foam, just a few sad bubbles. I researched. It’s a common thing. There are things to do. Whack the holder on a table to reset the magnet. Try a different kind of milk. More fat, less fat, no fat, different brand. Clean it. Clean it better. Bury a statue of an obscure saint in your front yard. Buy your own cow.

I don’t understand that the half and half milk that I used a month ago to perfection no longer works. Makes no sense to me but today I bought regular milk to try. I have been testing various fat levels to get that full heavy foam that gives a wonderful mouth feel to the coffee.

So far I’m getting lukewarm swill. My patience is wearing thin. I have another day of experiments before I call the manufacturer. I’ve done everything they asked (except for burying the statue of a saint and buying a cow). This shouldn’t be this hard. It’s coffee for heaven’s sakes!

Any advice welcome (except to switch to tea)!

  1. “There are things to do”…everything that followed here had me lol. In my last job, we all decided how great the coffee (and the hot chocolate!) would be if we got a frother to compliment the existing coffee/hot water machine. Day 1…we were in heaven. Day 2…we were in hell. The thing literally lost its mojo in 24 hours. None of the “things to do” worked…although we admittedly did not buy our own cow. The frother never again performed like it did that first day.

  2. Oh, that’s annoying with a capital “A” – if I have a cappuccino fix, it is the Hills Brothers which you put a liberal amount of the powder drink into a cup and add hot water. It does get frothy. I don’t have it very often as it’s high in sugar. I have Nescafe dark roast with creamer for breakfast and Taster’s Choice French roast with caramel creamer when I return from walking/errands, etc.

  3. Don’t even get me started with the fancier coffee machine. I’m learning the simpler, the better.
If you are looking for a good coffee LaColome Roasters. They are in Philadelphia. The Corsica blend is very good if you enjoy a rich flavor. They sell it at Whole Foods. Check them out online.

  4. I’m sorry your froth isn’t up to your expectations. We have an espresso machine, but no designated frother. Other than me putting some 2% milk into a Pyrex cup, zapping it for 30 seconds in the microwave, and declaring it froth.

  5. I wanted a frother, but maybe not. If something requires too much cleaning, it just gets shoved in a cupboard. “Bury a statue of an obscure saint in your front yard. Buy your own cow.” HA! Thanks for my laugh before bed!

  6. That is so maddening. They are making stuff so crummy today. My washing machine that is about six years old is all rusted on the top under the lid!!!! I treat it with great care, so there is no reason for it. They snottily told me that it’s past the one year warranty. I should have known better than to buy a large appliance with a tiny little one year warranty. That’s as if they are saying, it won’t last, lady!

  7. I’ve always wanted a frother. There’s no way I drink coffee without milk and/ or cream in it…well, until I lost my sense of taste and smell with COVID last week. The first day I felt well enough for coffee, I automatically put in milk and cream. Then I thought, “that was a waste!” So I switched to having my morning half-cup black, but I do miss the rich texture that comes with dairy fat.

  8. Good luck with the manufacturer! If you pitch a big enough fit, maybe they will replace it. As a devout tea drinker, I have no advice, just understanding. We all have our vice that is our daily necessity for a good day. Nothing else soothes us and peps us up at the same time.

  9. I don’t need froth, so I won’t comment on that. It was your statement about the coffee not being hot enough from home machines. I brew one cup at a time and routinely pop it in the microwave before pouring it in my cup, preloaded with a little milk and a little creamer.

  10. Well we gave up on Keurigs – had the problem someone else said they had with the constant request to descale – company had no solution – just said to recycle the machine and they’d send another one……which they did……three times……SO we bought a Cuisinart and LOVE IT. I’m only allowed one cup of coffee a day and I never got the hang of enjoying froth so just use milk. I’m sure I could EASILY become a lover of more sophisticated brew-ups if I was allowed to have them though! Coffee TASTES SO GOOD. Good luck!

  11. Wish I could help, but . . . gulp . . . I’m not a coffee drinker. 😲 I do like a hot, creamy tea with froth on top, though. I don’t blame you for being frustrated. You buy a thing to do what it’s supposed to do and then it doesn’t do the thing it’s supposed to do. 😒

  12. I can’t speak on any of that, because your coffee maker is much fancier than mine. I bought a used basic Keurig machine from a friend for $50 because she got a new one. It was great for a month or so, then it kept telling me that I had to descale the machine, which I did off and on for a week, MULTIPLE times. I got tired of that and it’s been sitting on my counter, unused, for over a year.

    • My old Keurig (at least 10 years old) was fine but big. I wanted something more slimline. Everyone talked about how wonderful the coffee is with Nespresso and I agree with them. The milk frother is not. I never had descaling issues with the Kreurig. It worked fine until I stopped using it. If you were close by I would give it to you!

    • My new system is Nespresso and I’m very impressed with the coffee. It brews differently from the Keurig (which is what I had). There is a crema on top. The frother is a separate machine and except for the first month, I haven’t been impressed. Also I like my coffee a little hotter than both machines make it.

  13. For years, I drank my coffee black, because that’s how my mom drank it so we never had anything special to put into it. A co-worker brought me a coffee one day with creamer in it, and I found that I didn’t get heartburn as quickly. Now I use equal parts of 2% milk and flavored creamer (vanilla caramel). I don’t care what brand of coffee it is, fresh ground or ‘stale’ beans, the taste of the coffee is diluted by the creamer, and I still get my fix of caffeine! Good luck with getting a new one!

    • When I worked, the rage was powdered creamer because it was shelf stable. No need for refrigeration which worked for the department coffee pot stuck in a corner. I hate powdered creamer so I drank it black. Now I love mochas which has a good dose of milk in it along with chocolate.

    • Without a splash of chocolate and big dose of foam, you are missing a great drink. For many years (most of my life really) I drank coffee black. All the better to taste it. Then I discovered mocha (the crack of coffeeland). Can’t go back.

  14. I had the same problem with a good coffee maker like that some years ago. Gave up on the project and just make and drink my coffee with milk added. I don’t think they build these things to last long, just like all other appliances these days.
