Random 3 for September 13, 2026 – Birthdays, food tastes, scams

It was a slow week for excitement so only three thoughts for today.

Happy birthday Mom! – Today is my mom’s birthday. She would be over 100 at this point. She died in 1986 and I still miss her! (and her cooking!)

Another side effect of aging! – My food tastes are changing. Last year I fell in love with black raspberry soft-serve ice cream. I couldn’t get enough of it. After a summer of no ice cream shop visits, we finally went this week. Meh. I’ll probably go back to Vanilla. A long time ago, I worked across the street from a large department store with the best ice cream counter. Tin roof was my favorite and sometimes it was my lunch. Sadly, as I’ve aged, I’ve become more lactose sensitive so now I must take meds to eat ice cream. That’s just wrong!

“Let’s reset your password” – That is the latest scam. Sometimes the message is from places you never heard of but sometimes they look legit. Our local hospital put out a message that there is a scam asking you to reset your password for their patient portal. I don’t ever respond to emails like that directly. If I get one, I’ll go to their website (without using any link) and see if there is a message for me. Nope, never. I got 10 emails like this a day for a week. Now it seems to have stopped. The scammers are throwing jelly at the wall to see what sticks or in this case clicks.

So how was your week?

  1. we are back to vanilla too.. thats the one and only … we had this with password change so many times… mostly from amazon fakes… ignored it… one was sadly real, my account was blocked, needed a passkey whatever it is… too complicated, mark created a new account… bring back the 80s please….

  2. Tin roof Sundae, YES! That takes me back to my childhood. My dad and I loved that flavor.
Sorry about your lactose intolerance. Yes, that is wrong!

We got the warning about passwords, too. Crazy how many scams are out there!

  3. Isn’t it disappointing when something you used to love doesn’t taste so special anymore? I remember the chocolate mousse they served at my daughter’s rehearsal dinner. It was absolutely delicious. She got married 25 years ago, and in all that time I haven’t tasted a mousse that could compare with it. Have my taste buds changed? Or do I need all the excitement of a wedding to enhance the taste? I think it’s both.

After raspberry soft serve, vanilla would be a disappointment for me. I do like variety and novelty. Vanilla is always fine, though.

  4. My mom would have turned 100 this year too! When I was younger there was a craze of eating a product that was marshmallow cream (a/k/a Marshmallow Fluff). It was in a jar and you heated a spoon, dipped it in the jar and spread it on your peanut butter. I liked it toasted best. It was called a “Fluffernutter”. A few years ago I saw some marshmallow cream in the store and had to buy it. I ate it once and decided it was way too sweet for me!

I got two scam phone calls this week from Comcast/Xfinity, the first offering me a half-off deal for a phone (even though the company has been promoting a free phone for several years now … there are a lot of strings attached to that deal too) and then another call the same day telling me my service would be cut off if I didn’t pay my overdue bill (I paid it the week before). Both calls came from a spoofed number as it said General Motors in the caller ID. I wouldn’t have answered but I have issues with my Comcast internet, despite getting a new modem and wiring 10 days ago as the neighbor’s tree fell down on the utility wires. I’m waiting on a tree cutter to remove the limb from my bushes and the wires.

  6. I have been seeing a lot of lactose free ice cream at the grocery store. My favorite is orange pineapple and only available at ice cream shops, never seen it at the store.

  7. It’s been two years since my mom passed in August – she was 98. Last night I watched a couple of videos I had made of her talking about her art, and that made me smile. My dad has been 30 years, 1996 this Sept. also, but I don’t have any videos of him.

Thanks for the heads up re the password change. i fell victim to a phishing scam a few months ago, a party invitation from a friend that I was expecting that got infected and went to everyone in her address book. They got into my email and infected my address book, but didn’t get any further as I was able to delete if before I got sent out. It looked legit, and it asked me to sign in using either google or my email account in order to accept the invitation. It was first thing in the morning and I wasn’t thinking, but how could I have been stupid enough to put in my password?? I quickly changed it, so no damage was done, as gmail had blocked it, but my other email provider had not. Lesson learned. I notified the friend, who was aware of it, and said a friend from her church had passed it along to her – and so it goes…. I am finding all this news and warnings about AI scary. Soon computers will be telling us what to do.

  8. Does missing our moms ever stop? So far (20 years) it hasn’t. I still say “Hi Mom” every day to her framed photo on my wall. My dad died almost two years ago and I don’t long for him the same way as I do for Mom, though I loved him too. I don’t think it will ever seem possible that she’s really gone.

  9. Happy Birthday to your Mom, Kate. I still miss my Mom, too. And her cherry pie! I have been telling SSNS that my taste buds are shot. A lot of things don’t taste good anymore. I haven’t been able to drink milk since my thirties. Thankfully I can still eat cottage cheese. Thank you for sharing the scam. A patient portal… never thought of that one. I always go back to the website. Our week was HOT and humid but we are starting to see cold fronts trying to edge their way down. I would be happy to get down to 90!

    • We had a delightful week weather-wise and it looks like the next ten days won’t be bad either. We have periodic rain showers but that’s ok with me. I love dairy. I can usually eat cheese without issue. I switched to Lactaid milk and ice cream but there are some things that I miss.

  10. I don’t mind being lactose intolerant. It’s a reminder that my body is not a fan and that I should indulge sparingly. BFF has ice cream daily. I might have a small bowl of vanilla with blueberries once or twice a month . . . accompanied by a little dairy relief pill.

Happy Birthday to your mom. Wouldn’t it be nice to travel through time and be reunited with persons, places, and pets that we have loved and lost?

  11. Happy Birthday Mom. Here’s hoping you’re having your favorite ice cream flavor, mine being butterscotch. Though I do know how our taste buds become finicky, like one of Kate’s cats. The only thing I NEVER get tired of is coffee. Hi Sasha, hi Gus, Hi Kate. :)

  12. Love the cartoon! The scam mail is so annoying. I get multiple calls and emails daily “following up on my request for funding” for a business I closed 5 years ago. And never needed funding anyway. It is exhausting.
