Random 5 for August 23, 2026 – Coffee, accidents, yearbooks, high school, eyeglasses

I didn’t realize how appropriate this would be for today when I saved it!

It wasn’t an auspicious start to the day! — I spilled my coffee while getting out of my car this morning. Sticky mocha latte was all over my car seat, my clothes, my smart watch, my purse and the inside of my car. My clothes and half a dozen towels are in the washer now as I figure out how I’m going to get the coffee out of my beautiful pink purse and I’m going to feel sticky (even though I washed off) all day. Argh!

The last yearbook – I tossed my senior yearbook finally. (I have a Throwback post on this topic on Tuesday.) I took one last ride through my last year of high school. Only my portrait picture was in the yearbook. Despite being active in clubs and activities (I even played intramural softball, and I bet my current friends would be surprised), my picture wasn’t in. I was in the swim club (despite being a poor swimmer). We had a hot dog roast at the end of the year. Nope, it wasn’t covered. I worked the concession stand, no picture. Even then I was the touch of death. If I was in it, there was no coverage. One last thing, many of my classmates are gone. Certainly all the teachers are (they were old back then!).

Speaking of high school – Back then there weren’t specialize curriculums that focused on a single career track. I had one teacher note on an assignment that my writing was good, and I should keep on writing. That’s all she did. She did not encourage me to get on the school newspaper, no road map or anything else. Back then writing wasn’t a career for a woman. They expected you to find your own way which I did. More encouragement and some guidance would have been nice. I did well in life despite not being one of the golden few in high school. For sure better than most.

Eyeglasses – I started the search for new eyeglasses. Buying glasses is not as fun as buying shoes. You are stuck with something for a whole year so it’s best not to be too creative. I had seen an advertisement for a pair that I liked. So far, no luck finding them.

So how was your week?

  1. Buying glasses is so tedious. Frames + lenses + cleaning stuff + optician appointment = a ridiculous amount of money. The last time I went, the whole lot came to £935. It felt like I was at the vet’s again!

  2. Coffee travels, I know this spilling it often. And you stoically didn’t mention your purse drank it instead of you. Bummer.

Let us see your new glasses when you get them. Curious to what you’ll choose since frames have gotten very glam. You can always take Sasha the Magnificent along to get her cat’s meow opinion. :)

  3. I still have my yearbooks though I have no idea why. I wasn’t all that crazy about the kids I went to school with and nearly 59 years later hasn’t changed my opinion about them. But I recently found out one of the people I did like passed away this year. That was a shock to me-he always seemed so healthy. Good luck on the eyewear. Now that my son is no longer in the biz, finding glasses that I like and that look good on my is really difficult-he knew what looked best and I’m not that great at choosing. Plus the fact that I no longer receive a friends and family discount really dampens my enthusiasm.

  4. I was a nobody in high school. Next to the youngest in the class…only had a couple of changes of clothes so the same ones were worn several times. No money for any extras. Worked in the cafeteria to pay for my lunch.
Everyone was stunned when I scored highest in the class on the Senior aptitude test.
Graduated at 16 and went straight into a full-time factory job. Things have steadily gone up since those days. There have been hills and valleys…but a steady climb.

    • I scored an internship in my senior year. There were less than 10 of us who achieved that. (Also no recognition in the yearbook.) They paid for my education. I worked at that company for 25 years before moving on. Sounds like you did well and are just where you want to be.
