Happy June! – I don’t know how this is happening, but the year is flying by. May was a busy month for us, it went by fast. I’m hoping June will linger. July is the month that seems to only have five days, and it’s gone.
Photos — We are getting a shade installed to cover the huge palladium window in the front of our house. They are pretty but I’d never recommend them. Huge heat loss in winter and heat gain in the summer. Hence the need for a covering. I took photos and got some interesting shots!
Are they crazy? – I drive past the parking lot of a golf club on my early morning coffee run. This morning with a temperature of 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), there was a group of golfers all in shorts and short sleeve shirts. Brrrr. Tennis, I understand as it’s a very physical game and you warm up fast but golf? Yikes! Our temperature will get warmer but not that much warmer and probably not until after they are done.
It’s done, it’s done, hallelujah it’s done! – Over the past week I cleaned the utility room in the basement. It contained 87 thousand paint cans, brushes, rollers, spackle tools AND the litter boxes. I use a clay-based litter which is advertised as 99% dust free. That 1% dust is awful. We reorganized and cleaned and cleaned. I tossed paint that was hard as rocks and tools that were unidentifiable. If the can didn’t jiggle, out it went! It was a dusty, dirty job and I’m so glad it’s done. Maybe I should get an air purifier for the litter room to keep the dust down.
Adjusting routines – It’s been almost 4-1/2 years since we moved. At first, I held onto some comforting routines especially my morning ones. Slowly, I have switched to businesses and venues that are closer and more convenient. Today I finally started using the gas station that’s on my new coffee run. It’s cheaper and easier. The only change we haven’t made and probably won’t is our pizza place. We have tried some closer ones, and they aren’t as tasty. It’s less than three miles from our home so it’s not a big deal to continue going there.
So how was your week?

Wow! That utility room cleanout sounds like a serious chore! You deserve a really good coffee after that 🙂 I will be interested to see the shade for your palladium window – are you getting one of the ones with the arc at the top? Inquiring minds want to know!

No, those specialty shades are $$. We had a contractor put a shelf with trim work above the window and the shade will be attached to that and rectangular. I was hoping I could photograph the trim but it didn’t show. The shade will be motorized because we can’t reach it. It’s not cheap but we’re hoping that there will be savings especially from the elimination of the summer heat and overall more comfortable in the front of the house. I would never recommend windows like this unless you win the lottery. We can’t reach to clean either even with our ladders. I’d love to close up some way that’s attractive but I didn’t come up with anything.

It is a very cool window, but I can see that there are some problems with it. There should definitely be some savings with the change to the heating and cooling costs! And not being able to clean them takes away a lot of the coolness for sure!

Well I’ve learned something new: palladium window. I like it, but I can see how it would be problematic in the Summer and Winter. It has been really chilly here the last few mornings too. I went out for a long walk yesterday near the water and wished I had brought along gloves … gloves on the first day of June? But it was sunny once the wildfire haze lifted a little. Tomorrow and Wednesday, we zoom up to mid-80s and storms. I think the cool air was nicer. I remember when Farmer Jack’s, the grocery store where my mom/I shopped for decades, closed suddenly when the chain shuttered all stores, I had to get used to Meijer, where I shop now. It is like a KMart or Walmart, huge and running from one side to the other. It took me a while to get used to it – the bonus was I no longer had to have an “errand Saturday” as I could get greeting cards, garden supplies, hardware items, etc. all at Meijer … one-stop shopping.

We have a local Walmart like that and I’m not a fan. Maybe I need to get used to it but it’s also peopley. It was in the 40s this morning going to 85 this afternoon. Just crazy!

I feel the same way – too big, too many people. Our Farmer Jack was like a Kroger, but no gas station. We reached 85 and I finally put the A/C on this afternoon for the first time.

Our favorite pizza place is a little over 3 miles away. There are a few closer – and less expensive – ones, but the pizza and antipasto salad makes the drive worth it.
I’m not sure if the golfers are crazy or if it’s just a peer pressure thing. Maybe the ones who show up in pants have to by the first round after the game. Me? I’d buy the round just so I could be comfortable.
Beautiful window (and view) Kate. It must have been hard to find a way to cover something so large and out of reach.

Yes it was hard and took creative thinking and a few contractors. We got someone to put up a trim shelf above the window that the shade attaches to. The shade will be a standard rectangle. We tried a few different other ideas. If we could have reached it, we would have done something different but it’s around 18 foot high. We’re both too old to get on ladders that high.

Talk about time flying–I can’t believe you’ve been there 4 1/2 years since I followed your move on this blog. 😮 Wow.

We haven’t had true shorts weather here yet. It’s been a cool and rainy spring. Last week I pulled out my wool socks because my feet were cold!

I gasped when I saw the view through the window from the second floor. I thought it was snow! Then I said to myself, you idiot!, those are clouds.

It does kind of look like snow. The clouds were so pretty. I hadn’t noticed a view like that before but I’m rarely on the second floor.

The window photos are great. I’ve lived in my new place for 3 years now and don’t know where the time went.

What!? I can’t believe it. Four-and-a half years? It seems like yesterday.
Shorts, at 50 degrees? How old did they look? They must have been young.
I hope you’ll show us the shade after it’s installed.

They were young middle age. Late 30s to mid 40s. And crazy! 🙂

Hi, Kate – Has it truly been 4.5 years since you moved into this home?! It honestly feels like like year…or at most…the year before that. Time definitely does fly. ❤

I know. I can’t believe it either. I miss my pond and screened porch but other than that, life here is good. This house is perfect for us.

I can’t believe its been that long since you moved. That pond is still so current in my mind. Time is certainly a little prankster.
I too can’t get over people in shorts as if it was already mid summer. Joggers whirled by me with hardly anything on while I had pants and a hoodie and was still chilly. Is it mind over matter or losing one’s mind? Let’s flip a coin.
And congrats on that impressive cleaning and organizing. Must feel good. 🙂

It looks like you are looking right out to heaven… those clouds. It’s a beautiful window. But I hear you on the heat issue. You will be so happy to have that window covered!
We still haven’t found a decent pizza place here… no chinese either 😦 I don’t know how far we would drive to find a good pizza or chinese food. I would have to give it some thought 🙂
Shorts or capri length here all the time! Have I mentioned before how much I miss my jeans. Got cold enough last December and this January to wear them. I was a happy gal!
Our week was HOT!

We have a few good Chinese places (at least ones that I like.) I would drive for good pizza. There are 2 other places I like but they are farther. If I’m in the area, I’ll pop in but the one next to my old Starbucks shop is my fav but we are out of it’s delivery zone. Going there is like family. When they see us, they put our pizza in the oven and make our drinks. Makes you feel special.

Soccer mom over here (who has played golf) just gonna snicker about golf being a physical game. For about an hour. Your window is so pretty!

I played golf once. It just wasn’t fast enough for me. I was a tennis, then racquetball player for decades. I loved the racquetball because it wasn’t weather dependent. The window is pretty but not practical.

Wow, love those window pics! The reflections were so cool. Kudos on the basement organization. It’s always good to get things squared away especially in places where things seem to multiply like rabbits, i.e. basements, junk drawers and garages.

I hate basement work. It’s dirty and dingy down there and rarely gets cleaned! There were dust bunnies as big as my cats. With new organization and less stuff it should be easier to clean although I’m sure I’ll still hate doing it.

Congrats on the clear out. We sorted out the loft/attic shortly after we put the house on the market and our decluttering of shelves put boxes under the bed. Still no sign of a serious buyer. Viewing yesterday under the impression of ‘cash buyers’. No they weren’t, a housing association would be buying the property, then selling a 25% minimum share to an individual (their daughter who has leaning disabilities) on a mortgage or private funding, then renting the rest. Surveys to be done PRIOR to offer being made, and said surveys could take months to arrange. Not our way for a sale if they are interested.

I’m sorry your buyers didn’t work out. It’s annoying to straighten up and clear out for a showing only to find out the financial piece wouldn’t work for you.

It’s an odd scenario for us, though we are aware of shared equity schemes. It will be interesting to see what their feedback is and what the agents think.

Three miles is NOT too far for your fave pizza place.

I don’t think so. There are two that are within a mile but neither are as good.

The views from the window are lovely, but I can imagine that it doesn’t do a lot for heat and cold less/gain. The hardest part (well, one of them) about moving is finding all the new places you need, replacing the old ones. The older we get, the less we want stuff to change, I think….at least for me. But 3 miles is not to far to drive for better pizza! As for shorts and short sleeve shirts in cool temps, I think that’s a guy thing. My neighbor is in shorts this week….brrrr!

I agree. My husband switched to shorts about a month ago and there is no going back until October. I would brick up the dang window if I could. I’ve let the dogwood grow for some summer shade but a dogwood doesn’t get big enough. Two doors up they have a birch that shades their window in the summer. Planting that at the right spot was a good idea but you have to do it 20 years ago! 🙂

You need a time machine so you can go back and plant! But hopefully the shades will work.

On the way to the grocery I drive through a golf course, it’s on both sides of the road so I literally drive through it. As long as there’s no snow or ice there are people out there when it is 30ºF. I don’t get it but apparently the appeal of golf is so great that temps don’t matter.

Congrats on the basement clean-out……and I love your palladiam window but can understand why you’d want a shade. Routines are tough to change for sure – but when you realize some things will make life easier – well – it’s a “no brainer” !! Happy JUNE.
