Random 5 for September 15, 2024 – Peace, politics, commercials, weather, friends

Mostly peaceful week – I love weeks that aren’t heavily scheduled. This past week was one of them. I had stuff to do but not appointment-type stuff. I love weeks like that. I have a couple of busy weeks coming up. I am both looking forward to it and regretting that I overcommitted.

Going into hiding – I was at a function this week where I was seated among a few outspoken political folks. As I listened to lies that they hadn’t fact checked, I wondered why I was there. I didn’t challenge them as it was a celebration for another friend, not a place for arguments. This was not the time or place, but I was the only one who knew that. I want to hibernate until after the election and hope that people can be “nice” again no matter what their political views are.

Speaking of that – We are hiding in streaming shows to avoid the political commercials. Can you imagine how much good we could do if we put that money to disease research? I can’t believe I’m looking forward to car and drug ads after the election.

The weather – I complain about it a lot, but it’s been perfect here. Cool nights and warm days. Not too hot and not too cold. If I must find a negative, it’s that the daylight is getting shorter but everything else is perfect.

Starbucks – I saw someone I haven’t seen in a while. At our age it either means they had a wonderful summer vacation or a hip replacement. I don’t know which.

So how was your week?

  1. After a busy weekend I’m catching up a bit late here but agreeing with you that the less scheduled I am the happier I am. I haven’t seen any political ads on TV because all we have is streaming, but the amount of political snail mail is increasing every week. Very wasteful.

  2. It’s amazing to me how people are so openly discussing their political views now in settings that are supposedly neutral. Granted, I live in a boiling hot red state, but I’m still constantly having to move away from the noise. Recently a waitress at a restaurant was opining on politics — loudly — to diners at a nearby table (hard to move away from that). It was irritating to say the least. I’m with you on the car and drug ads returning again. – Marty

    • The very weird thing is that the folks who were talking assumed that everyone at the table agreed. I later found out we weren’t the only ones that didn’t. In pleasant social situations it’s best to keep your political opinions to yourself.

  3. I am so with you on peaceful weeks. I am taking a break from doctor’s appointments till after the first of the year. I need it. I really think that doctor’s appointments are a stressful anxiety producing situation and sometimes just need to take a break. I have a dear friend who just said no to doctor’s appointments that were just made for 6 month checkups when she wasn’t having issues. She thinks she is mentally and physically healthier for having done it.

I am taking a break from the political chaos too!

    • I have stopped going to some docs because there is no issue. I have nothing going on right now. My dry eye is under control and my bones are actually getting better. I have a mammogram coming up. It’s a 6 month because they keep seeing something. I’m trying to stay Zen about it but underneath it all, there is a squirrel on the loose! We are starting to see signs pop up. Some are regular but sometimes people try to add something and it’s usually grammatically incorrect or stupid.

  4. Our local news is the absolute worst with regard to the number of political ads. I keep it on mute during commercials. We have a homeless issue in our major towns, and I wonder how much help we could provide if they funneled just a small amount of that ad money to that cause. I have a gardening friend who is not answering emails, and I’m wondering what the reason behind that might be. Enjoy that nice weather.

    • We mute too. I accidentally heard a new ad for a new drug and I was all “gosh! I didn’t know about that one!” Perhaps I should do more muting! It’s always troubling when someone doesn’t respond in some way. I always worry that something is wrong.

  5. Last week was a peaceful week for me too. This week is going to be busy, fortunately not appointment-type busy. Fun busy instead. It’s good to have some variety so we can look forward to a change of speed.

We seldom get political ads here in WA, but I, too, will be glad when the election is over.

    • You are so lucky. I am in a big battleground state. In addition to a steady stream of ads, our roads are constantly closed because of visiting campaigners. I’ll be glad and hopefully when it’s over people won’t get so riled up.

  6. I don’t have TV so no ads for me there, but there are plenty of political ads on YouTube where I go to watch the local nightly newscast and also the weather video from various news stations. Even Facebook has its fill of political ads. I can’t vote as I’m Canadian, but I did watch the debate and Twitter is still lit up over it. On my all-news radio station, in a Bloomberg Business Report, I heard there is a new person at the helm of Starbucks trying to recapture some of the original features that made it so popular to begin with (no, it wasn’t the PSL). They said that with so many people ordering on apps, that the cozy atmosphere and chance to chat with your barista who knew your preference as well as your first name just doesn’t happen now. So this new guy, who just left Chipotle (I think it was Chipotle) aims to bring back the original “charm”. I recall you mentioning this in some of your posts, especially when one of your long-time baristas left – I think she graduated from school.

  7. Hi, Kate – I don’t blame you for hiding from election ads and other never-ending-political election commentary at this time of the year. The long election timeframe would do me in. Canada’s is much shorter (min 37- max 51 days) and that is long enough for me. Good luck! ❤

  8. Sounds like a pretty doggone good week. Bravo. Yeah…the political commercials are way too many and frequent. I read where the estimate of this election is going to run about $16 billion, yes, with a ‘B.’ Think of what could be done with that money besides tearing people down. Sigh.

  9. Praise God for a peaceful week!🙌🏻
“At our age it either means they had a wonderful summer vacation or a hip replacement. I don’t know which.” – This made me laugh out loud!😄👏🏻

  10. I am definitely in agreement about hibernating until after the election is over. Sadly, depending on the outcome, things having to do with the election might run on for another year or two. I keep telling myself that whatever will be will be which helps keep me calm amongst Politics and politicians talking negatively about the other candidate.

I am enjoying this weather as well. It is ideal for spending time outdoors just enjoying the fresh air.

  11. I too hear snippets of false information. It’s almost as if people need to believe all the numerous lies, rationale seeming to have left the country.

The weather in New York too has been glorious. No humidity, a gentle breeze. And no one can argue that a peaceful week is like winning the KentuckyDerby.

Have a good week Kate. Starbucks comin’ up.

  12. I wish campaigning only lasted 100 days. No sooner is a politician in office then they are fundraising for the next election. But politics is big money in this country, especially after the Supreme Court ruled that corporate spending couldn’t be restricted.

  13. We had a quiet week . . . except for the hacking, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing caused by an extremely nasty respiratory ailment that snagged BOTH of us. ACK!

Being healthy is nothing to sneeze at!

As for politics, I get my daily dose by watching the Late Night Hosts ~ Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, etc. Just like a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down . . . laughter makes the political landscape more palatable!

Glad you had a good week. Keep it up!

  14. Yay on your peaceful week!

Oooh, yes, I understand wanting to hide out over political season. I hate it! And yes, the money for political ads could make a difference in disease research. It’s a much better cause than paying money to spread lies.

  15. I’m loving the weather as well. Just perfect this last week, and still very nice now. I think we will all be glad after the election, at least from the perspective of political ads. So much misinformation in them, and I have to wonder how many minds they actually influence or if folks just believe what they believe no matter what.

  16. I too enjoy a peaceful week…..they seem to be few and far between when you add in “old person” medical appointments but I’ll take what I can get! Politics – not that I don’t CARE about politics but I really DON’T care to hear about it 24/7 – especially when I’m out and about or with a group of people…..let’s talk about the weather – our pets – our significant others – our aches and pains. Anything. We’ve had perfect weather here too but it’s about to get rainy – for a whole week – I think it’s fall out from that weather system traveling up the East Coast. Leaves are starting to turn – I love that.

    Hugs, Pam

    • I think we are going to get some rain but hopefully not a rainy week. Yikes! Old people appointments. Another yikes! Every ailment no matter how small if another specialist. I have developed a trigger finger. So far it doesn’t impair my use of the hand but it’s finding another specialist when the time comes.
