Random 5 for January 28, 2024 – January, Groundhog Day, texts, dreams, positivity

Sayonara January! – We are down to the end of the month. Can’t say I’ll miss it. The good news is that it’s getting lighter longer each day. The bad news is that it’s cold, dreary and full of calamities.

Groundhog Day – Many years ago (decades really), I decided to celebrate Groundhog Day (February 2nd) as the first day of spring. We get more winter after it but we are on the downside. It boosts my spirit! The next holiday is Fastnacht (or donut) day (yes, I struggle for holidays this time of year!) which this year falls on February 13th. It’s amazing what you celebrate when the weather is gloomy.

You did not! – Twice in the last week, a business said they had texted me a message and I didn’t receive anything. Both times I was waiting for it. I doubt that they texted me. I fell through the cracks. They must know that phones today have a history of calls and texts so the old lies no longer work. (I can still fake static and communication breaking up to end a call!)

Dreams – I often wake up an hour before I get up, fall back asleep and have either a weird dream or nightmare that I remember. I can’t always interpret my dreams but this time I did. It is my struggle with trust issues mostly with businesses, sometimes with people and my lack of control about it. People don’t always do what they say they will, and they are rarely truthful about it. Businesses are about the sale, not the customer service afterward. My coping mechanism is to not fully believe most things people or businesses say but occasionally, I get snookered. So to sum it up “trust = snookered.”

No, really! – I’m generally an upbeat person but I get worn down. My goal is to spring back up like weeble wobble and not appear deranged. (The last part is sometimes tough. I feel like Jack Nicholson in The Shining! Or maybe One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.)

So how was your week?

  1. It’s gone viral, people not doing what they say they’ll do, both professionally and personally. You really have to pay attention since, so many people nowadays are insincere. The trick is not to take it personally since, it’s their flaw, not yours, but that’s easier said than done.

I’m already tired of the cold. If that groundhog’s wearing skiwear, we’re gonna be in trouble Kate. I’m rootin’ for a bikini. 🙂

  2. I am loving the extra light. It’s been so gray and rainy. February is usually our coldest and snowiest month of winter – but it’s being predicted that we’re getting an above average temperature February!

By the way, did you check your spam and blocked folder for those texts? Google will block spam that is sometimes not spam, especially people using a private number. I never think to check that while I’m being annoyed by a text I haven’t gotten and I had to go looking for it in curiousity.

Best of good thoughts, vibes, and energy for Gus and his visit tomorrow!

  3. Hoping that things get better for you soon! The gloomy weather mixed with anxiety and problems with cat health and so on is not a good mix. But Gus’s consult will hopefully help that, and also, Groundhog’s Day is right around the corner! It’s getting sunnier, slowly but surely.

  4. The Ethernet and Wi-Fi are cruel friends we’ve come to depend on and who seem to relish letting us down (not that businesses don’t do the same). Hopefully this week will be better. Afterall, 6-7 more minutes of daylight ain’t all bad, right?

  5. Yes: “trust = snookered.” I’m finding that more often when dealing with businesses. I read somewhere that Gen X is the last generation to believe in brand loyalty.

    • We’ve worked with a lot of contractors since moving. Some were great and some…not so great. It’s always disappointing because we are not crazy people to work with. Not surprised about loyalty. Brands are changing so frequently (bought out and rebranded) that it makes loyalty hard. I miss some of my old clothing brands that I could depend on for sizing. I also miss people living up to their promises. Our kitchen designer promises we will love the new bathroom. I sure hope so but setting my expectations lower than ecstatic.

  6. Gosh I forget about how “healing” a donut can be….must put that on my grocery list. I’m not sad about leaving January behind…now we can launch ourselves more fully into the new year without January dragging us down. It was just plain WEIRD here in the weather department – last week we had one day (one precious day) it got up to 80 degrees. Now that is weird for January. I’m hoping it isn’t a sign of things to come…………!

    Hugs, Pam

    • I’d love an 80 degree day right now. I’d roll around in the grass (probably the deer poop!). Weather has been weird but I’m grateful with our non-functioning heat pump drama still going on. This isn’t the winter for a cold one! Except for having to do taxes, February is a better month. Soon it will be April! Yay!

    • During the pandemic, I had a sick cat that I took to our pet ER. They kept her overnight. When I went to pick her up, they made me wait in the car for over an hour (despite the fact that they had me make an appointment). I was so angry if I had any sharp tool I would have broken their big windows. I was frightened at how much rage I could have. So yeah, I get jacky too.

  7. I wish we had had a normal Winter because maybe getting slammed with snow/rain/ice/fog/freezing rain and a week-long Polar Vortex would have been easier to take. Here in Michigan for Fat Tuesday it is all about “Paczki Day”. They are pronounced “poonchkey” and are wonderful, but very fattening. It used to be a few decades ago you had to go to authentic Polish bakeries to get the “real deal” but the grocery stores now churn them out and they are just as good in my opinion. The Detroit area, specifically Downtown Detroit, is famous for their coney dogs. Some enterprising guy decided to create a “Paczki Dog” … a donut with the wiener and chili sauce and onions cooked inside the donut. Yes it went over gangbusters – another Detroit tradition!

  8. We get about a half an hour extra daylight from Jan 1 to Jan 31, so spring is definitely coming! I had no idea that there was an official Donut Day but I intend to celebrate it now that it has been brought to my attention. There’s an old fashion out there with my name on it.

  9. Yes January can be a tough month. It was bitter cold here for about a week. Now it’s unusually warmer, which makes me happy even if it won’t last. I like the idea of donut day!

  10. We’ve noticed the very slightly lighter evenings, too. Not a lot, but we’ll happily take anything we can get at the moment. Still feels weird moving to spring when we’ve only had a week of PROPER winter …

      • We had one week of bitter cold for us, but I know that most people wouldn’t consider it so. Our resident daffodil came out in mid-January so 🤷‍♀️…

  11. I had to show Jerry your last two paragraphs/sections of this post. Your words described exactly how I feel about businesses and people in general. And how all the people-ing and my lack of being able to control the whole mess and his no worries about anything puts me in overdrive to manage it all. In the end I get totally worn down. I have always said that Jerry doesn’t worry about anything so I have to do double the worrying for both of us. There is one thing I don’t have to be concerned over… it is Spring and Summer here all the time! I can definitely get on the donuts bus… I need a cake donut.

    • They make cake donuts everywhere! The true Fastnacht is made with potatoes and lard but I don’t think you can get those except maybe from a church for a fund raiser. Oh yeah, I get the worry part. I know it makes no senses and doesn’t help but I do it anyway.

  12. I haven’t had a donut in a while. Now I’m waiting for Feb. 13.

The good thing about those dreams in the last hour before you get up is that you can remember them. And sometimes they’re good or at least interesting. This is also the good thing about not having to get up early and rush somewhere. My sister-in-law told me she never dreams. But she’s the type that jumps out of bed the moment the alarm rings and gets busy with her day rather than giving herself time to remember her dreams.

    • I was able to figure out what my dream was about. Sometimes I just wake up with an emotion and I have no idea what it’s all about. It’s troublesome when it’s gloom and doom!

  13. I hope things feel better once everything is resolved with Gus’s issues. And I get gloomy in the winter too. Once Christmas passes, I’m ready for spring. Hang in there.

  14. The seasonal depression is rough, plus January for you is like March for me. I’m glad you have a holiday to loo forward to. My one sister in DC was so excited to sit in the sun and open her windows when it was 75 degrees this week. She’s scheduled a visit out here, too, in order to get more sunlight. Fingers crossed we have it for her!
