Random 5 for September 3, 2023 – Jimmy, harbingers, Starbucks, seasons, change

No cheeseburgers in paradise – We are huge Jimmy Buffett fans here. Parrotheads. Wannabe island people. We’ve seen him a half dozen times and it’s always fun. (I have a long list of concerts performed by famous artists that weren’t). His concerts weren’t about lights and special effects. No wardrobe changes (that I noticed). It was about the music. People tailgate before the concert. Everyone is swaying to the pre-concert music. It’s for families with the littlest ones dancing around and making us all smile while the grandparents are trying to figure out how to work their cell phone to take pictures. His death hit us hard. We’ve never met him but he was one of the good guys. Big on environmental and animal issues and kind to people too. It’s as if a favorite uncle has passed. The uncle who made things fun and helped you out of jams. He was all about a lifestyle we all wanted even if only in theory. RIP Jimmy. May you find your lost beaker of salt.

Is it holiday season yet? – This week I was bombarded with catalogs. Lots of them. When they come, the holidays are never far behind. Argh!

I finally got an answer – I asked the local baristas at Starbucks why it’s been so dang busy lately. The parking lot is like the Indy 500 and there are easily 50 drinks waiting to be picked up. She said it’s a combination of school opening and pumpkin spice. People who don’t do Starbucks all year come out for a pumpkin spice latte (which according to the SB ingredient list does not have coffee in it). Every single day! Likewise, school folks pick up their caffeine medication before reporting to work.

The last holiday weekend of the summer – Every year I comment on how fast the summer went. Blink and it’s June. Blink again and it’s August. I’m torn between so many activities to do and wanting to just sit and enjoy life. It’s a struggle. Lately sitting has been winning.

Adjusting – Just like those pumpkin spice folks, there is a part of me that is looking forward to sweatshirts and soup. I love the briskness of a fall morning and the warm afternoon sun. If winter wasn’t so dang cold and long, I’d love all the seasons.

So how was your week?

  1. RIP to JB!
You mention the briskness of fall. Well, it’s still hot here in AZ. But my son let me in on a secret. He walked his dog at 5AM this morning and said it was nice and chilly :).

  2. Jimmy will be missed, thankfully we will forever have his music and lots of video to watch. Today we will listen to him with friends by the pool and drink a Margarita.
I read up in comments that Morgan is doing well… very happy to hear she is doing okay.

  3. I’ve never been to a Jimmy Buffet concert, but I suspect I’d have liked it. I am sorry to know that he’s gone, but his music will live on in my life. I listen to his station on Sirius a few times a week.

  4. Oh, I love fall. And my friends and I all loved loved loved Jimmy Buffet back in college. I haven’t listened to him much in recent years, but that is because I got busy and forgot how to relax! He will be missed by many.

  5. I am looking forward to Fall – the cool and crispness entices me. It’s been a lousy Summer … buggy and muggy and stormy. Seven tornadoes in August, six in one night and too close to me. I hope it is college kids buying Starbucks beverages and not middle school or high school students. How do they afford it? I heard Starbucks PSL drink is 20 years old. I wish I had seen Jimmy Buffet – always wanted to. I’d see the fun surrounding his concert venues in the Detroit area, the costumes people wore including parrots on their head. All good fun. I learned some things I didn’t know about him this weekend in retrospective stories … didn’t know he was an author and that, despite his laid-back attitude, he was a savvy businessman who was a billionaire. He never flaunted that … his music and mannerisms were not ostentatious; instead he made people feel he was like one of us.

  6. How lucky you are to have seen Jimmy in concert so many times. I wish I would get some catalogs. The only catalogs we get are seed catalogs in Dec. and Jan.

    • I get a lot of clothing catalogs (LL Bean and Lands End and others) but I also got the Brecks fall bulb catalogs. We’ve driven some distance to see him. He was at bigger venues than we have locally but it was worth it.

  7. Like so many people, I was shocked when I learned of Buffet’s passing (I would have expected Warren before Jimmy). I wasn’t aware that he was facing health issues. Although I never saw him in concert, I’ll miss him and his positive vibe.

We have both a high school and a Starbucks fairly close to our house. I am surprised how many high school aged kids stop there before heading off to school. A) That’s a lot of money to spend every day at that age, B) That’s a lot of sweet calories to consume (I am guessing here, but I imagine most of those cups aren’t filled with black coffee, and C) I remember thinking that coffee was a grown-up drink. I think I had my first cuppa in college (you know, when I was all grown up).

  8. Jimmy Buffet’s songs are peppy and relaxing at the same time. I like the way he wears shorts and a simple colorful shirt on stage. Most of his albums were released when we were in the Philippines. Although the radio stations played a lot of American pop music, he wasn’t popular in a country where beaches are plentiful and people like to stay out of the hot sun.

You shocked me. I’ve never tried a pumpkin spice latte, but I had no idea that they don’t have coffee. That’s crazy.

  9. Yes, Jimmy made you smile. Did you treat yourself to a margarita? 🙂 Cool that you got to go to a lot of his concerts.
I agree about winter, if it wasn’t so long, I would like it better. And there is something soothing about hoodies and warm sweaters in the crisp cool air of Fall.

  10. Jimmy was one of a kind – a TRUE one of a kind. He made people happy with his music and sense of humor. Had no idea he was suffering through that unusual skin cancer – he just carried on loving life………

  11. Even if you weren’t a Parrothead, how could you not like a guy who looked like he was having a blast singing happy tunes that made us all smile. RIP. I thought of you on Friday when I had coffee with a friend at a local shop and just had to order a pumpkin latte. It was quite good. 🙂 We’ve hit September, and our temps have cranked up into the 90’s this coming week. No sweaters yet. 🙂

  12. It’s so much better when it’s the racist old uncle who dies, rather than the one on the right side of history (and plants, and animals). RIP, Jimmy Buffet. Pumpkin Spice is synonymous with FOMO–what a marketing coup. My favorite season item has yet to appear– apple cider vinegar potato chips.

  13. I follow people like James Taylor, Paul McCartney, et al., on Instagram, and nearly every one of them has a picture along with a memory of Jimmy. He certainly had an impressive array of fandom that’s for sure. He was one of the good guys for sure.

Wait, what? Pumpkin spice doesn’t even have coffee in it????? Good lord, people! – Marty

  14. Yes, Jimmy Buffett shows were about the music, not the lights and costume changes. Husband and I went to Starbucks yesterday morning for coffee (regular, plain}, something we seldom do. It was packed – drive-thru, pick-up and ordering. Maybe it was because it was Saturday pr the pumpkin lattes.

  15. I love Jimmy Buffett. I didn’t go to a lot of concerts, I always believed I could have the album for the price of the concert. I wish I could go back and change that. It’s just not the same and I would have loved to have seen him live. There’s something for nearly everyone in his music, I particularly love some of the introspective music he did after his daughter was born.

    • He was very electric at his concerts. He used to shout “I love my job!” I used him for several presentations I gave when I was in Human Resources. The theme revolved around “get a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” So many people allow themselves to be bogged down in jobs they hate.

  16. The world has lost a very special musician and human. He will be greatly missed. 🍹🌴🦜 While I know loads of people are not fans of winter cold, I’m so over the relentless heat. Looking forward to sweater weather for a good long time. Happy Labor Day.

  17. Losing Jimmy Buffett was sad for all of us, because some of his songs were classics that crossed genre boundaries. I, too, am ready for some cooler weather, maybe not quite sweats yet, but long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

I will never understand the fascination of pumpkin spice, because it’s seldom got any actual pumpkin in it and the flavor exists from the same spices used in the making of a pumpkin pie. I like pumpkin pie, but I wouldn’t want to eat it very day!

Was glad to read a post where there were no ‘negative’ goings-on with the cats!

  18. I’m looking forward to fall weather too, but looks like summer’s gonna give us all a (maybe) final blast before we get there. This week looks pretty hot…so not my favorite, and hard for walking the dogs too.
