Did last year go faster than normal? — (Not that I know what normal is!) Too much sick cat and doctor appointments can dim the holiday spirit for sure. Or is this something that happens in normal aging? Nothing else about me is normal.

How did they do that? – One thing that amazed me about the holidays was the really quick delivery and not only Amazon! I got a shipping notice of a week out and it came the next day. That happened several times. Hope it lasts.

Recipes – When I scroll Facebook I often see interesting recipes. I rarely click on a link but a cool recipe will make me drop my defenses. Why is it that they are filled with so many ads that the page bounces up and down making it impossible to read? Also, the recipe is way down, like the equivalent of a sports field. I know ads support but if there are too many, I close it down completely so it’s counterproductive. Also the ads themselves are disgusting. I keep getting one with a huge naked belly hanging over a belt with the wording, you can fix that. Seriously? Or even the weird warts and skin barnacles that they have a cure for. Yuk!

Where the cool kids go – Today my Starbucks opened at 9. That’s too late for me. I normally pick up between 7 and 8. I have places to go and people to see (not!) so I like an early coffee. I went to next closest one and ran into Gorilla Man (from the pandemic mask fame). We chattered on about how this one was good in a pinch but our regular Starbucks was friendlier. Someday I need to find out his backstory. He drives a Mercedes convertible (yes, the top was down in the winter) and has clothes to kill for. I’m sure he’d say he grabbed any old rag to pick up coffee but those are not rags.

Holiday dinner is on the stove and in the crockpot. Our tradition is to have pork and sauerkraut. This year we moved up the timing to accommodate my brother. At 92 he’d prefer to drive home in the light and I can’t say I blame him. Hope I’m driving when I’m his age. The alternative is to win the lotter and have a driver at my beck and call. (I kinda like that idea!)

  1. Happy New Year! Glad you got to see your old friend the Gorilla Man again 🙂 We made pork and cabbage yesterday as well. Dave won’t eat sauerkraut, so we make a dish called Company Cabbage instead. It’s the same kind of thing, but less sour. I know what you mean about the ads on the recipe pages – so annoying!!

  2. Driving at 92–I’m impressed. I have a few years to go before my 90s but I am already limiting my driving. I rarely drive outside of my own city (Culver City) and NEVER after dark. One of the reasons is TRAFFIC and that isn’t going to get any better. I’m fortunate that I can walk or take public transportation just about anywhere I need to go. So I’m not really car-dependent to start with. I signed up for an UBER account but haven’t had to use it yet. Happy New Year!

  4. Delivery is always interesting. Some items arrive in 48 hours and sometimes there is something so simple yet it takes a week. I still applaud all those companies and employees who bring items to our front door. There is one blogger I follow who has so many ads sometimes I just have to quit because I lose track of what he’s trying to say with so many interruptions. We had steak for New Year’s dinner. I haven’t eaten sauerkraut in years. When I was pregnant instead of craving ice cream, I ate it by the bowl full. I think I got my fill. 🙂

    • Craving sauerkraut? That’s a new one for me! It’s healthy for you. The ads drive me nuts. Originally if you didn’t do the “no ads” on WP, there was one ad on your blog, now it’s 9 and some are gross. Why anyone would click on them is beyond me!

  6. I find time goes fast but this year went extremely fast. I would like to know what Gorilla Man’s backstory is – you need to do some Nancy Drew sleuthing! Follow his car and see where he works. Steak and lobster here for New Years – no dessert though.

  7. Talk about a tease! By now you have us all curious about Gorilla Man.

    Pork and sauerkraut sounds delicious. Pork must be popular around here. After Christmas, I wanted to make a Filipino dish: pork adobo. But between the icy roads and the scarcity of the right kind of pork, I had to give up. We had salmon on Christmas Eve and crepes for brunch on Christmas day.

    I don’t know if the year is passing faster, but my daughter, son-in-law and grandson from Maryland flew back home today, and all I want to do now is rest.

    • I woke up today (Monday) glad that it was all over. I’m glad to see the holidays come and I’m glad when they are over. Too much going on to enjoy each one for it’s own merits. BTW I love crepes! Haven’t had them in ages. We used to have a creperie here but it closed. So good!

      • I hadn’t had crepes for a long time either. My son-in-law made them, and my daughter had lots of berries and bacon to go with them. It was fun.. Now it’s time to go back to a simpler fare.

  12. I certainly agree with you about how quickly 2022 came and disappeared! I really felt it enough that it kind of scares me. Slow down!!

  14. Happy New Year Kate! I agree about the years going faster! My husband and I are always saying that. We have pork and sauerkraut in the crock pot right now. 🙂 And YES, if I can have a chaueffer at my beck and call, I am all for it!

  15. The years go by too quickly. I had a quiet New Year’s Eve. While others were heading downtown to see fireworks, I enjoyed two firework displays from my balcony window from nearby communities. They put them on from 8 to 9 and I was asleep by the time the new year arrived. I was surprised my cat sat watching them too. I wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year!

  16. It was a fast year and as I age they are FASTER and FASTER! The one thing that was also fast that I hope stays that way (as you do) is shipping time. I definitely could get used to that! Only food-related New Years tradition we have is black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. My Mom insisted on it bless her and I’ve carried it on. Lots of butter and salt. MMMMM HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  17. We had a fairly quiet NYE, although we visited a neighbor briefly for some pre-celebration (since we’d be in bed when the actual event happens) bubbly. I agree about the ads. I wonder if the person who owns the site knows what everyone visiting it sees. One or two ads, fine… but when there are tons and they move around, or – yuck! – advertise gross stuff, I’m outta there.

    • Neighborhood bubbly is nice. Sadly we weren’t invited anywhere within walking distance. I didn’t see any activity so I don’t think there were any parties or get togethers. Our night was quiet too. In bed for the ball dropping. I rolled over and was snoozing fast.

  19. Tell me all about sick cat appointments! Well, not SICK sick, but just needing drugs. I’m now wondering if they injected him with amphetamines by mistake at the last appointment, because he is BEYOND manic now. Bonne Année!

  21. Happy New Year! Pork (especially a roast) and sauerkraut sounds very good. We are having Jerry’s crab cakes, recipe courtesy of Robert Duvall’s Mom. Found it years ago. Have a wonderful dinner with your family! Oh, this year didn’t just go by faster than normal, it screamed by!

  24. Fast year and FASTER month ~ I just put the Christmas decorations out “yesterday” (12/1) and now they’ve become redundant.

    We have Chocolate on New Year’s Eve (for good luck) and Hoppin’ John on New Year’s Day (for prosperity). It’s the only time of year I eat black-eyed peas. It is NOT the only time of year I eat CHOCOLATE!

  26. I’m fond of saying that we reach a certain age where the days seem long, but the years seem short. I suspect maybe you’ve reached yours. Because this summer was so darned hot and humid, I spent 90% or more of it indoors and, without much of a change of scenery, I think those three months went by quickly. And yes, it felt like the kiddos had only been out of school for a few weeks before there were school buses back on the roads again!

    I like pork and sauerkraut now and again and made a big pot back in September. I’ve simply pulled a plastic zipper bag from the freezer to reheat. And because it’s only me and I’ll smother the taters with sauerkraut and broth, it will be the instant kind since I really won’t taste them anyhow. And I’ve still got another bagful in the freezer!

    For the record, I have had New Year’s Days when I don’t partake of this traditional meal and my luck hasn’t been noticeably changed!

    I look at a LOT of recipes online and I agree that it takes a while to get to the actual recipes. And when I finally DO get there, I either need ingredients I would only ever buy for this particular recipe or I’m required to put things in a blender and/or stand mixer, neither of which I have!

    Hope the cats stay healthy (I’d say “out of trouble” but…) and that you and hubby stay healthy, safe and warm as well!

  27. I feel you on the sick cat! This month was nothing but healthcare issues–for everyone in the household except Boss Cat. 3 visits to Pediatrician ($), 2 two visits to orthopedist and X-rays and MRI ($$), one visit to the ER ($$ but only because we hit our deductible already), and hours with Emergency Vet ($$$$$).

    I’d hope this month would be better, but LOL, now it’s a new deductible and spousal surgery.
