Random 3 for July 17, 2022 – Tomatoes, old time phones, kitties

Another short version for today. I could say a “slow news” week but it’s more a case of a “lazy blogger.”

Grandkitties – We have new grandkitties. Some people have grandkids and we have mostly grandpets! Welcome to the newest!

The good old days

Another one bites the dust! – I have been growing a cherry tomato plant in a pot on my deck. It’s grown tall — too tall. I should have chosen a patio variety but I find the cherry ones sweeter. It was started late because the deck wasn’t finished. I had a good crop (for a pot) of tomatoes on it until Thursday. The best I can surmise is that a squirrel sitting on the deck pulled it over to nosh on it. The top was bitten off and the entire plant was laying on the deck on its side. About 80% of the baby tomatoes were scattered over the deck. Now I have a ginormous plant with about a dozen or two baby tomatoes nowhere near ripening.  Do I have the patience to keep watering it? Cherry tomatoes grow too tall to keep in a container. They get top heavy. There is nothing like a tomato you pick yourself and eat but that is not happening this year. I’ll have to give it more thought next year.

Summer TV – I’ve been watching old detective shows like “Rizzoli and Isles” and “Castle” while regular programming is in hiatus. I found some old shows of “Cold Case.” I watched a few and I noticed the “tethered” phones with the curly cords on the detectives’ desks. Wow! How old is that? I kept yelling at the screen to try newer techniques like DNA testing and the spectrometer.  We have come a long way baby!

So how was your week?

  1. A few weeks ago, we went away for a few days, and a severe storm hit our neighborhood. Large branches were down in the streets. Several of our backyard potted plants were blown over when we got home, especially the cherry tomato plants. You can imagine, with how lopsided and high they grow. Looked like the end of those. But, we kept watering and pampering and they both came back! Not sure how far gone yours is, but thought I’d mention that there is hope. 🍅🙂

  2. Cutie pie kitties!!!! Yes, we have grandpets, too. And, as you might have gleaned, I have two of them now. I will eventually post about them, but I’m not yet ready. But it’s a LOT of work integrating two extreme personality seniors with my three kitties.

  3. Congrats on the new grandbabies! Aren’t they just the best? Too bad about the cherry tomatoes. I love those things. I want to try to grow some next year. We’ve just been growing fruit this year. Fruit takes awhile.

  4. I asked my daughter to suggest something new to watch, and she suggested The Old Man. It’s a bit dark for me, but it’s definitely suspenseful.
My husband was a master with cherry tomatoes. Of course, that was in Vanuatu where the weather is perfect all year long. He planted 8 or 10 plants along one side of the house. There’s nothing better than a cherry tomato picked and eaten right there and then.

  5. It is funny to see old phones on tv shows. I am glad we have come a long way.
We have had better luck with our cherry tomato. It is growing in a large glass jar. It came in a box from Walmart with the seeds, jar and dirt.

  6. I’m totally with you in yelling at the television, Kate. Last night (against my better judgement) I watched the new Netflix version of Persuassion. While it was better than I anticipated (my bar was very, very low), I kept yelling at the screen “that would never happen in 1815)! Sadly, the yelling got me nowhere! 😦

  7. Congratulations on the new grandkitties! Your talk about tomatoes had me asking SSNS to go pick up some tomatoes for our chicken salad sandwiches for tonight. We gave up on planting our own tomatoes because everyBODY but us was eating them. I love the Campari tomatoes we get at Publix so it all works out. Our week has been HOT!

  8. My tomatoes are like a science project gone bad, and I’ve definitely learned not to plant anything that the squirrels or chipmunks want. I’ve bee scanning for shows too, but I’ve watched Rizzoli and Isles at least twice. I finished Lincoln Lawyer, Bosch Legacy, Joe Pickett, and now we’re working on Dark Winds. Happy hunting.

  9. My friend in NC kept multiple cherry tomato plants on her deck and the squirrels kept eating them. Someone suggested she paint Tabasco sauce on each tomato to deter the squirrels. This was a painstaking project and the squirrels, which you would think, would only have to try one tomato one time and burn their tongues, then scamper away, having learned their lesson – well, nope that did not happen. The squirrels would try one after the other searching for an untainted cherry tomato. She finally figured the time and energy expended in trying to grow tomatoes in planters was better spent buying them at the grocery store. 🙂

  10. I don’t at all recall Rizzoli & Isles! I somehow missed that one. I see Lorraine Bracco was in it, pre-Sopranos. I’ll have to check it out. I do recall Castle because it was a favorite of my dad’s. The corded phones are always a dead giveaway, aren’t they? – Marty

    • I was surprised when I saw the corded phone. I didn’t think the show was “that” old. Lorraine is great in it. It’s in the same genre as Castle. Murder, detectives, humor, some family shenanigans. All good.

  11. Our four volunteer tomato plants have stopped producing so it’s back to purchased tomatoes for us too. When you factor in the water and labor costs, it’s probably cheaper that way anyway. We’ve been watching Korean shows on Netflix lately (with English subtitles) and have been impressed with the technology shown that we don’t have in this country.

  12. Sounds like you’ll need to check out some local farmers markets or stands for those just picked tomatoes for this year. I’ve gotten addicted to some series on Brit Box, Death in Paradise currently. Nothing like Caribbean scenery and a murder mystery for easy viewing!

  13. We loved having cherry tomato plants on our deck – have stopped growing our own as the farmer’s market has delicious ones and we aren’t having to do the work. LOL BUT my husband had to build cages for the big pots – 3-4 feet high and we staked them – the squirrels were confused by the cages couldn’t get over them or reach through them. I agree though they are the BEST tasting ones! Congratulations on the Grandkitties…..they’re adorable.

    Hugs, Pam

    • That sounds like a lot of work! I can get good ones at the market but they are pricey. Last week I bought $10 worth of cherry tomatoes and it wasn’t all that much. Another issue is the footprint on the deck. Our deck isn’t huge. We are getting a narrow rectangular table and stack chairs so we can eat out there. The plant will be “indaway” so…..we’ll see when the new furniture comes. Still nothing better than home grown tomatoes!

  14. No matter what the current technology is, there’s nothing like a good binge of Castle episodes. I probably would watch Nathan Fillion read a phone book! Sorry about your cherry tomato demise. I plant mine in a large pot and stake it around with support to keep it from toppling over but you’re right-they do tend to get somewhat leggy (which probably explains the baby plants I find nearby). Tasted my first pair of that luscious goodness this week. Have a lovely Sunday, Kate. And congrats on those new grand-pets-very sweet.

    • Castle is by far my fav too although I like Rizzoli and Aisles but there aren’t many episodes. I agree about Nathan Fillion. Cold Case has a darkness that runs through it. It’s also the one with telephone cords. Not sure if I’ll watch many more.
