Last week I was behind the most annoying driver I’ve seen in a long time. She was stopped at a green light as I was coming up behind her. (Yes, I said green.)
It had been green for a while because there is an initial turn signal that was already gone. I honked. No movement. Still green.
I honked again and she very, very slowly drove through the intersection. I barely made it through on a yellow (sort of pink) light.
She managed the next turn fine but we came to an intersection with a three-way stop sign. We had right of way (no stopping at all). There was a sign that says so. She stopped.
There were cars at the stop signs waiting for her. No further movement from her. Yep, I had to honk again.
I don’t know what was going on. She was a local. Turned into a housing development. I suspect she was on her cell phone or somehow very distracted. No one else was in the car.
What makes people think they can do other things while they drive? They can’t.
Reflecting on this experience, I am wondering if perhaps I am impatient. (I know it’s so hard to believe I am not perfect!) Perhaps she was having a moment.
I don’t know what exactly that means but supposing she just came from a doctor’s office and was told she had a critical disease.
Nope, not buying it. That happened to me and I bawled in the parking lot before I ventured out on the road. That’s what a normal person would do (after all I am the standard by which we judge normal).
So what else could have been on her mind or is this a conspiracy plot to make me believe that indeed I am impatient?

I’m pretty sure it’s a conspiracy, Kate. We have those here, too.

I only shake my head at bad drivers, but it takes a lot of patience to drive nowadays just waiting for the day when we will all have jet-packs but then we will be waiting for a cloud to move or a bird to fly faster!

Can’t wait for that. Sign me up!

I rarely lean on the horn, but that doesn’t mean I’m being patient. I’m talking a blue streak the whole time. 😉

I am a polite horn tooter (road rage incidents with guns have refined me that way). I rarely lay on the horn but I too have a steady vocabulary going.

Love this statement- it’s sooo true.

Thanks. I think most of consider ourselves somewhat normal.

Oh gosh my city impatience almost got the best of me and thank goodness my country patience set in. Last Saturday as I was driving into town at around mile marker 5 miles to town, three cyclists took as in captured the right lane. I proceeded to drive 20 miles an hour not daring to pass as there’s a double line protecting drivers from what’s coming in the opposite direction on hills and curves. Not once did it occur to them to veer to the right and I arrived with a trail of a dozen other cars behind also, exercising caution around those hills and curves. I think this just turned into a post. If it shows up on my blog, thank you for the time to develop. 🙂 or vent, one.

You are a good and patient person. Locally about 2 years ago, a pick up truck came around a blind bend crossing the line. He killed a biker and maimed two others. He hit them head on so it was a different scene from what you are describing but very tragic. I am really good (and patient) about blind curves. Maybe not so patient with other drivers’ lack of courtesy.

Come to New Jersey, the land of drivers with attitudes. You’d fit right in with the rest of us!

I lived there for 3 years. It’s where I got my impatience! Then I moved to Pennsylvania. It was like a third world country.

Love that cartoon. (Also love your parentheticals.) (Is that a word? Did I spell it wrong?)
I tried to use a cell phone once while driving on a slow, quiet road. Missed my turn. Didn’t try again.

I think it’s spelled right. If not, we’ll never know. I have a hard enough time trying to change a radio station when I’m driving. I have to wait for a red light.

There is that but I am sure you have stories about public transportation that are…ummm….interesting.

It’s amazing that as many of us get from point A to point B as we do. I try to “keep calm and carry on” but some days (and people) are more challenging than others!

Yes indeed! My ex didn’t have patience with drivers at all. He would scream at them. Of course that was before everyone was packing heat and road rage became common. We lived in NJ at the time and I had to remind him to check the license. Out of state plates were a good indication that the person wasn’t exactly sure where they were going.

that’s an excellent tip (checking the plates). And, after driving with my Mom (eek!), I’m especially sensitive to little old ladies who can barely see over the steering wheel … 🙂 MJ

Yes, that’s the next thing I look for, older people in huge cars with just the very top of the head showing. (My exes parents drove an old Oldsmobile that was almost as long as a mobile home.) They get a free pass. Well really, I just try to stay out of their way.

Get a bullhorn. Pull up behind “bad drivers” and ask, “What Are You Doing?” (Wear a bullet proof vest . . . just in case).

Love that idea. Better plan my funeral and check my will first.

I have no time for people who text and drive. I mean, really? By the time they actually get to look up from their ‘urgent-and-important’ text it’s usually too late for them or the other person/s they’ve crashed into.

Me too. I have a friend (a mature friend who should have known better) who totaled her car will using the cell phone.

I am in total support of the “come to a complete stop and wait while a school bus is loading or unloading little people” but truthfully? Every time I get stuck behind a school bus on a major roadway, and end up having to STOP and WAIT, it seems like my impatience starts bouncing in every direction. I’ve actually become an expert at avoiding that critical “golden hour of the bus” whenever possible. Just call me cranky. It rhymes with impatient. Sort of.

I am better at waiting while they pick up the little critters. I get frustrated that the mommies have to give hugs and kisses after the bus comes to a stop. Or even worse, they stop at all railroad crossings, open the door to look and then go. I am sure it’s safer but it seems to take a long time.

I remember how I was after my beloved shared with me his diagnosis of Amyloidosis, a rare incurable and fatal condition. I drove but not as one should under normal conditions…I was stunned. Perhaps that poor driver was like that…she didn’t harm anyone.

That’s where I was going originally with the health issue. There had to be a reason. No one drives like that. She shouldn’t have been on the road but perhaps she needed something and had to go out. Perhaps she’s lucky I was behind her. I am a honker (very gentle of course) but I don’t yell obscenities.

Yes, it was a good thing it was you and not some maniac w/a gun or someone who might jump out of their car, grab a tire tool and beat the poor thing and her car to pieces. Road rage is rampant.

You were generous to even try to make up excuses for her. Maybe give her some kind of hand signal with your finger as you pass her.

Like a nice wave? After the third honk I wondered if she had a gun in the car. Crazy days.
