There is nothing like a really good friend…with benefits!

No, not those benefits! I’m thinking something more useful.

There are friends and then there are….friends. Some friends are couple-oriented friends and some are spouse-specific. Some friends are “do things with” friends and some are “talking,” “shopping” or “eating” friends.

The other day, one of my friends stopped by and we started talking about the “friends” we wished we had. They may be “utilitarian friends” but we would like them just the same. Here is a sample.

This beach house will do just fine! It is large enough so we will all have our own space.

  •  A good friend with a beach house who would just love to have us visit. They don’t even need to own a boat. The house will do. A pool would be good though.
  • A friend with a time share….no, they should OWN a wonderful house in the Caribbean. Wouldn’t that just be so fun! Umbrella drinks on the deck.
  • While we’re traveling, how about a pilot friend with a private plane?
  • Maybe a friend in the medical profession so you could just email or call with your symptoms and someone would say, “Go visit your doctor or you’re going to die.” That would eliminate the worrying you do before your symptom either goes away or you actually go to the doctor.
  • We recently had the county tax assessor reassess all the homes in our area. We sure could use a friend on that committee!
  • A friend who was very important at Ticketmaster so we could get the best seats for concerts — maybe even a box. Yes!

This may all sound crazy. Ok, it is crazy but we all have talents and knowledge that we willingly share with friends. I have answered many questions on human resource issues and other things for my friends for free. I don’t hesitate to call up a friend if I think they could help me with a problem or if I need some information. Isn’t that what friends are all about?

Too bad I don’t have a friend that works at Ticketmaster, with a beach house, a private plane and a medical background. Is that too much to ask?

  1. Maybe you could place a “Friend Wanted” add in the personal section of the newspaper. “Woman with desire to stay for free in the Caribbean or beach seeks new close friend with home in the Caribbean or on the beach.”

  2. You just made me realize how lucky I am for having a doctor friend! Poor thing, she gets calls from me every week describing detailed symptoms because Google said I have a life threatening disease. I love her!

  3. Yes, please. I’ll have one of each of those. I’m rather new to the friend thing, I’m slowing making them, and it’s been difficult to ask with out feeling I’m asking too much. I recently asked a neighbour for advice on selling my house and she said she was thrilled to help. That made me feel good.
My son is friends with the boy next door and this friendship began because this little boy has a pool. Kids have no trouble with this kind of transaction.
Oh, and you have a friend with a medical background. Ask any time. 🙂

  4. Good list . . . we hang out at the local marina in an effort to get invited onto the BIG yachts. Usually we’re just stuck with the dinghys. 😉

  5. I don’t know anyone with a beach house or anyone who works at Ticketmaster, but I have a great friend who has a great patio overlooking a wonderful pond where we can talk about anything and especially our love of animals. I am blessed -Thanks Kate.

  6. Hmmmm! I love all your new criteria and will now be obsessively looking for those very attributes in any new friend. Unfortunatlly, the friends I have fall short except for sharing compulsive laughter, shopping, arguing, storytelling, and providing help and support when needed. And none of them has a beach house! 😦 A great post Kate!

  7. We miss our pool friend! We were their snacks and beer friends. And we loved our master remodeling contractor friend ( we did the work ourselves on 2 houses). And there was the friend with horses – so great for the kids. We all felt like a 3 ring circus of friends!
Fun post – good things to thinks about

  8. I would love to have a friend who was/is computer savvy and she has to live next door. lol
As it is, it seems I am the one who is the savvy one. 😦 And are we ever skating on thin ice.

Computer things get more complicated every day. There is usually nothing you can’t get through with a good friend beside you to laugh or cry.

    • I do have a computer friend, thank God! He doesn’t live near me. In fact, it’s quite a distance so I only use him for real problems. Other than that, I am the resident expert and yes, very thin ice here too!

  9. And then there are the friends that are all the above – the talk to, shop with, do things with, etc. etc. friends. These are my friends. I feel blessed. I also manage to cover quite a remarkable number you have on your wish list friends. I feel even more blessed!

    • You are blessed! So am I! I have really great friends who are there when I need them and at the end of the day, that’s more important. However a beach house…..
