Random 3 for November 30, 2025 – Snow, friends, cats

This photo is from a 2016 snowstorm at my last house.

It’s a short one today. You know…holiday weekend…too much food…just plain lazy. All of the above.

Snow! – Parts of the US have been getting significant snowfalls. It’s early for our area to get any real accumulation but some snow is predicted for this week. It’s pretty for the holidays and puts you in the mood. Come January 2nd, I’m ready for spring! Unfortunately, we get most of our snow in February when I’m weary of winter weather.

Earl! – I get my daily coffee at Starbucks. So do a lot of other people and over the years, you get to know the regulars. Last January I switched stores. It wasn’t an easy decision because I loved my store. Everyone knew me and I had friends there. The new store was the same distance but better yet, I didn’t have to go through an area that is “infested” with deer. It was nerve wracking to drive through a wooded area with a lot of deer. I missed my buddies but eventually the baristas got to know me. I never made friends with any regulars. They are a lot younger and sporadic. No old guys meeting up for coffee or pre-work get togethers. After almost a year, I caught up with Earl. He was a daily regular at my old shop. Technically he lives closer to the new shop, but we all loved the friendliness of the old one. He has switched his weekend routine so I may see him more often. It’s nice to see even bits and pieces of an old routine.

Heavy hearts – A neighbor’s indoor cat got out this week.  He’s skittish normally so getting him back in wasn’t easy. It had to be on his terms. We all held our breath the first night he spent outdoors. It was cold. He’s an old guy. He wasn’t ready the next morning but there were a lot of sightings. He didn’t go far. Just next door and his own yard. Eventually he was hungry or tired or cold (probably all three) and he let his owner pick him up. He gave her a good scolding for his predicament while she showered him with food and love. All is good in the ‘hood, at least for now.

One of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes winter cartoons!

So how was your week?

  1. Your slow-falling snow flakes are starting to put me in the mood. Several of my neighbors have been putting up outdoor lights. I’m grateful since I don’t dare climb on a ladder.

I didn’t do Small Business Saturday, but I’m planning to shop in the small businesses in town later this week. Like at your Starbucks, it’s nice to greet people you know.

    • The snow on the blog was a surprise to me this morning! They are predicting 2 to 4 inches for tomorrow. We’ll see. We are in a valley next to mountains and the weather isn’t always as predicted.

  2. On this last day of November, still FALL, I am proclaiming the snow and wind events are getting to me! We got three inches of snow, but early this morning, it rained, so some snow melted, the rest was heavy, but it’s going to the “teens’ tonight so it will be slick in the morning = no walk again. Our winds were gusting at 40 mph all day long and, for the second time this week, ripped the address plaque off the pole light. I just had it repaired in September with new bolts, but it came out and was on the bushes a few days ago. So, I strung it up with pipe cleaners only to have it come off again this morning. This time I used two pipe cleaners on each side and shoelaces … there goes my chance to be featured in “House Beautiful” for the foreseeable future. 🙂

  3. I read your post from December 16, 2017. It was featured underneath this post so I decided to read it. It was Gracie’s first Christmas with you and she and Hazel were loving the velvet skirt under the tree and staying out of trouble. Calvin and Hobbes were checking out the snow sharks! It was a treat to read and then I read further here and there are the snow sharks today!!! Haha!
How nice you talked to Earl. Always special to have little moments like that during the Christmas holidays. So incredibly happy that the Old Guy Cat let his Peep pick him up… maybe he was looking forward to the being showered with food and love part!!! Our week was wonderful… a lovely cloudy cool Thanksgiving Day that made it feel like November!

  4. Before we could order ahead at our local Starbucks, we knew the barista by name and became ‘friends.’ Almost like “NORM” in cheers, but we’d get “Pam and Jerry!” Then came Covid and ordering ahead and most of the regular staff left. But still, every time we come pick up our order we stop and say HI! and THANK YOU. And they all say, “Thanks Jerry and Pam!” 🙂

May we all recover from too much food and not enough movement. I think I better for a walk. But wait. It’s brrrr out with snow flurries. I’ll stay in and watch football. Ha. Happy December in a few hours.

  5. Your old house was lovely….and big….but exactly my style! We had snow last night which was pretty and festive, but this morning it’s melted off the roads which is what I care about as I have a ton of errands to do this week and don’t want to be snowed in.

  6. I remember your other house. You have such a lovely aesthetic Kate. People without taste, and there are many, should seek you out. The cat story made me sad thinking…uh-oh…it’s curtains for kitty but alas, a happy ending. It’s what we all look for in everything.

    Snow???Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Glad there was a happy ending for the escape artist. Whenever I see a cat outside in below freezing weather, my heart winces. We received a touch of snow, no biggy really. But it’s a glorious 13F this morning. 🥶 Me thinks Wilson & I will only be talking a when we reach today’s predicted high-26F. Have a great week, Kate.

  8. We do our grocery shopping when our grocery store opens on Sunday at 6AM – we’re the only shoppers in there so have the store to ourselves….this morning when we went out to the garage to hop in the Terrain we noticed something WEIRD outside – SNOW! Our first one – it was light and mixed with sleet when we backed out and down the driveway……turned into rain by the time we got to the store. Just a reminder of what’s to come! I’m glad your neighbor’s old cat’s unauthorized MIA turned out OK. Maybe wanted some fresh air and that freedom feeling for a bit. I think we ALL enjoy that once in a while!!!!

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy)

    • We are having serious flurried now. The “biggish” snow isn’t scheduled until Tuesday but you know Mother Nature! She never does listen! We were all happy about the cat. Old cats are not prepared for the cold and then there are predators.
