Random 5 for October 26, 2025 – Roads, country roads, health jargon, friends, medical procedures

Shazzam! – We have had a detour to get in and out of our development for a year. Recently they closed the main road for two weeks, tying in our road. (I’m sure I’ve whined about this!) I live in a rural area. No square block! Lots of curvy roads and one-lane bridges. We had to take the time to learn the back roads or hibernate for two weeks. The whole shebang was opened on Friday. I’m giving credit where it’s due to our State Department of Transportation. The roads were opened three days earlier than planned. It’s a dang miracle!

A side benefit – We took the detour time to learn some key back roads and found a few shortcuts that we will use without a detour. After living here for almost five years, we finally know our way around. Sort of. Maybe.

Health jibber jabber – We have a few friends going through health issues. We try to be supportive but non-intrusive or annoying. When we get an update, we’re never sure what it means. Serious illness is a stressful time, and I don’t expect people to be concerned about me. Sometimes it would be nice (but not necessary) to understand.

Speaking of health – One of my mahjong friends just had surgery for a cancerous brain tumor. Other than not feeling good in a general way, she had no symptoms. She went to the ER one day and had surgery the next day. She’s in her mid-80s. Bless her.

It’s the week for it! – I get my colonoscopy (and hopefully my last medical test for a while) on Wednesday.  I’ll let Maxine speak to you about it!

So how was your week?

  1. Yay for PennDOT getting that road open! And also glad you got to find your way around a little more 🙂 So sorry to hear about your friend! I hope she is OK and your c-scope all turns out OK. Those are not fun.

  2. It’s a good feeling when finally learn your way around.

What a terrible shock for your friend with the brain tumor. I hope she’ll be okay.

    I love Maxine’s take on a colonoscopy.

My internet has been out for a couple of days. The delightful technician came this morning and fixed it. Hurray!

  4. I hope your friend has a speedy recovery from her brain surgery – feeling okay one day and brain surgery the next day sure is worrisome. You’ll be glad when the colonoscopy is over and you’re done with doctors and procedures for 2025. I like the Maxine cartoon!

  5. I hope your friend has a full recovery. Brain surgery is a big deal at any age, especially when her age. It is nice to know one’s way around when road work is mucking up traffic.

    • All of her friends are worried. She is able to text and communicate so we are hopeful that she doesn’t have any deficits from the surgery. Hopefully they got it all but I don’t know that. She lives alone and that’s worrisome too.

  6. Kate, so sad about your mahjong friend. I hope her prognosis is good/hopeful. Can’t help but say a little prayer for her. Not what you want to deal with anytime but in your 80s it has to be quite a challenge.
Congratulations on the end of roadwork and learning all the back roads! Our roadwork continues but they aren’t messing around… they are working at night which helps and they are moving along fast.

  8. I’m sure you’re glad the road construction project is done….! I’m sure you wish the colonoscopy was done too. Remember: “this too shall pass” (oops…maybe that’s not a proper quote for a colonoscopy?!).

    Hugs, Pam

    • The road construction wasn’t as bad as we thought. The detours were well marked and manageable. Everything worked on schedule. They worked a couple nights the first week of the tie-in so that helped.
