Can this be true? – I read an article on summer super foods. I was devastated. Potato chips didn’t make the list. Neither did pizza. It had stuff like blueberries and spinach. Seriously! I was surprised to see fresh corn on the list. There must be some enjoyable food that is good for you.
A leopard doesn’t change its spots – We had a health crisis in the extended family this week. All is ok now, but it again reminded me that I am a “doer” not a “soother.” I did stuff like picking up a rotisserie chicken, changing the refrigerator filter and attempting to download apps on a cell. Someone else must do the hand holding.
The aging part – Responding to a crisis sure sucks the energy out of you. I was much better at this when I was younger. It takes longer to kick in the gears but I made it.
The third may be the charm – We have a local outdoor venue nearby that has free concerts every weekend. Sometimes it’s music we like and sometimes not. This coming Friday there is a group that we have heard before and enjoyed. They play oldies from the 60s and earlier. The last two concerts we wanted to attend were rained out so fingers crossed this one will work.
Speaking of summer – Again it is fleeting. It’s almost mid-July and it feels like it just started. (I’m sticking to my belief that July has only 8 days!) Weather hasn’t been consistently pleasant but that is weather. In my childhood memories, summer lasted a lot longer, was a lot sunnier, and came with ice cream (which we haven’t had yet!) and picnics (we had one!). I should play some of my favorite teenage summer songs to get in the mood. (See if you remember the lyrics. I did and bounced in my chair to this tune.)
So how was your week (and what was your favorite summer tune, maybe “Under the Boardwalk)?
I also don’t do the soothing thing very well, never have, I’m afraid. However, as I get older, I, too, have less and less energy for doing things. So I am probably not much help in a crisis, alas.
“Superfoods”? Well, chocolate, obviously – winter, spring, summer and fall. Everybody knows that 😉
It’s made with cocoa beans, which grow on a tree, so that makes it a fruit. Fruit is healthy, right?
And if it’s milk chocolate, it’s doubly healthy, because milk contains proteins.
Don’t ever let anyone tell you chocolate isn’t good for you!

Summers definitely lasted longer when I was a kid! Of course now I don’t get off for the summer, so who cares 🙂 Hope you got to the concert you wanted to see! Is it Musicfest time already, or is this something different?

Something different. Musikfest is in 2 weeks or so.

Summer definitely did last longer in my childhood as well. Part may be memory. another part is that I now live on an island with a more moderate climate (both in winter and in summer) but another part is that the weather is actually changing (and remains unpredictable).

I was a “service kid” and grew up all over the world – some places were WAY WORSE than here with humidity and heat (Taiwan) and some places were perfection (Germany). I didn’t used to feel humidity as “acutely” as I seem to now but it’s just so darn miserable. Heat I can deal with but WET HEAT is like living in a sauna. YUCK. Anyway, so many things I used to manage to live with well are now on the “I hate this” list since I’m old. I like iced tea more, ice cream more, a cooling rain more….so it’s not all bad really. I just like to complain MORE. HAHA I remember “Under The Boardwalk”!!
Hugs, Pam

That was an interesting childhood. I don’t think I traveled farther than 10 miles from home during my childhood except for 1 trip to the NJ beach. Humidity bothers me more than it used to but I tend to be cold so most of the time, if it’s not too humid, I like the heat.

I’m with you on the humidity…….Virginia just plain has very humid summers although when we lived here for a couple of years back in the late 50s I was a kid and kids don’t care what the weather is like as long as they can play outside! LOL

As a child, I don’t remember humidity and there was no ac back then.

We just got back from seeing a cover band we like. We’ll be seeing that band a few more times before the summer is out. They do cover of our favorite late 70s early 80s rock bands (STYX, Journey, Van Halen, Chicago, Boston, etc). Lots of old people there, so we fit right in. 😁 Hope you get to go to that outdoor concert. Enjoy.

There are some great cover bands traveling. We missed Island Music (Jimmy Buffet cover) and an oldies band because of weather. The one on Friday is slightly older music that I remember but was before high school.

Summer is speeding by and I’ve not enjoyed it as I usually would because of the heat, humidity, volatile storms, wildfire smoke and according to local ER docs, the ERs are filled with people who have tick bites. Across the USA ticks are the worst since 2017, but here in the Detroit area, we are 61% more ticks than last year. So, while I like hiking on rustic trails, I’m not going to risk ticks so I’ll stay on the paved/asphalt pathways. Not as exciting, but …. This surprises me since all the weather folks kept saying during our brutally cold Winter “this’ll kill off all the ticks this year, just you watch!” Right.
I live a block over from a park that has a bandshell and the City has been sponsoring music in the park every Thursday night the last five years. They are all tribute bands (rock mostly). They had such a crowd that they have the music in the park on Tuesday nights too. I’ve not been to any, but can hear them from my house and they post the entire concert on the City’s Resident Facebook page a few days later.

It’s cool that you can walk to a concert if you wanted. Nobody is talking about ticks here so I don’t think they are worse than usual. We have a wooded area in the back and the deer walk through our yard but so far no ticks spotted. the cold weather was supposed to knock down all the insects. It didn’t work for ants for sure! Still battling those.

Yes, just around the corner. We also have severeal other events, like “Art in the Park” and “Downriver Cruisin'” so they have bands for those events too and they are multiple-day events, so every day. In fact for the cruise, they have “Battle of the Bands” so lots of bands. You’re lucky if you have deer right there and no ticks. I don’t understand it as we had a Polar Vortex and several brutal cold spells. Bugs are hardy. Noah should not have allowed them on the ark! My ants are finally gone. I heard an ad for Zevo today and it is pet friendly and claims to kill gnats, spiders, ants. I took a quick look and I remember they came out with the flying insect light you plug in … I was not keen on plugging something in like that, but the commercial made me look, like today’s commercial, which I heard two or three times.

I’m thinking of getting ant baits. I don’t want to spray inside because of the cats. I have to pick up their food dishes right away or there is a parade!

Yikes, the ants … the gift that keeps on giving! I had the Terro Liquid Pre-filled Ant Baits, but didn’t think they worked so well. My handyman at the time said he saw carpenter ants outside and told me to get the Terro pellets (Terro Perimeter Ant Bait Plus). So I got a few canisters of that and have not seen Carpenter ants around the perimeter. I think I told you we had them before and got rid of them by a small pest control service (using Marigold Dust puffed into the basement under the dropped ceiling). Orkin sprayed and dusted for years with strong pesticide and we still had them. The Terro products I believe are non-toxic to pets and you can put them underneath, out of sight, like under a stove.
I’m glad to be rid of mine, but was worried when I read in the Resident’s Forum about all the flies. I trapped a fly downstairs and it was still buzzing around a week later. I used to be able to find the occasional fly that got inside dead a few days later as I was sprayed for centipedes and spiders with pesticide by a pest control company for years, but no more … it was alive and kicking. All my canned goods are on shelves downstairs so I will have to wash off all the lids and peel off the wrapper before using them.

I’m going to get the ant bait. In addition to spraying the perimeter of the house, the service I had also put the bait traps down and that helped. My problem is the cat food area which I keep moving around. I have to pick up the food dishes immediately after they eat even if they don’t finish because they bring ants within minutes.

I thought you said the guy used bait – it was probably commercial bait and stronger than Terro. Can you buy it from the pest control service – probably not as they want you to re-up with them, but might be worth a try.

I can buy it on line but it’s $$$. I don’t have as many as I had in the spring so I’m starting small.

Good “soothers” are hard to find. It’s not an easy task.
I tend to have big expectations for summer. I have to scale them down to suit my age and energy. The weather’s been good, though. This week I’ll be getting together with two of my daughters, one son-in-law, and two grandsons. I’m counting on that providing some summer fun.
Enjoy your concert on Friday.

I’ve met some natural “soothers” but not me. I get antsy around sick people and swear I’m allergic to hospitals. Since I’m aging that’s not a good thing.

If I have a personal crisis I want a doer around! Pizza has to make the list… look at all the good for you things on a basic pizza. When you order stuff for the top put a couple super food things on it. Or not. I am always happy with extra cheese and mushroom. I miss pepperoni, black olives and mushrooms but my stomach doesn’t. I was 8 in 1959 but I know and like the song you posted. When I think of summer songs I think of Southern Nights with Glen Campbell singing at the Farm Aid concert in 1985… On YouTube 🙂
I hope you make it to the concert on Friday night!

Talk about perspective. 😉 We think there has to an endless amount of summer days-at least around here in our dry as a bone heat. I’m totally over it and can’t wait for the moderation of autumn, set to officially arrive in 71 days. Wilson and I can’t wait. It’s too hot to eat, move or be productive. My hair is beginning to look like overcooked pasta, separating into layers of unruly waves on days when there’s more than 30% humidity. Even Wilson’s coat is beginning to wave a bit some days, which tells me its growing and will need some serious grooming soon. It’s been too toasty to enjoy outdoor events (the old Elitches Gardens hosts concerts under the merry-go-round but there’s no way I’m going. I’d rather listen to music off my phone, sip a cool beverage and not deal with annoying Gen Z’ers anyway. They can have my spot in the heat.

I agree – summer is going by way too fast. There has been too much humidity and rain, but at least I haven’t had to water, although it’s hard to go out or walk in that heat. I remember both summer songs!

I haven’t done much outside walking this summer either. Too hot unless I go out at the crack of dawn.

Summer has been pleasant here so far–it always is. For us, the heat won’t really kick in until August and September. Right now we have lots of fresh strawberries, but that will probably change, thanks to ICE terrorizing migrant workers (who are actually part of a government sanctioned program and not criminals). Too chicken to actually go after real criminals, but they’ll snatch anyone who isn’t white out of the fields and off the street.

We’ve had good strawberries. Local season is in June. I was able to find apricots (which I love and are fragile for stores) this year and they are great. Also wasn’t on super food list. Not a fan of ICE. That kind of terrorizing doesn’t work. At some point there will be a rebellion of some sort. I’m surprised enterprising sleuths haven’t posted the names of the ICE police and start picketing their homes.

Some have. More need to! But right now it’s all about using apps and social media to warn folks where ICE is in SoCal so a) locals can harass them, and b) anyone worried about being kidnapped (and sent to a prison camp or country where they don’t even speak the language) can avoid the area.

I feel like it’s been July now for two years, kind of like how February is the longest month of the year. No pizza or chips? Say this isn’t so! Healthy food is the food you need to stay healthy. Silly list.

Two years? Yikes! Different perspectives. Feels like 2 minutes to me. Then again it’s been weird. Too hot, too cold, too wet. Whatever happened to just right?

I too am shocked pizza and chips didn’t make the list. We need to vote in a new list maker.
And you’re not kidding…summer with the exception of the heat she brought, isn’t even all unpacked. It must be age that makes you feel the fleetingness more than most.
About not being a soother…that isn’t totally true. You’ve soothed me many a time Madam.
Give my best to Morgan, Sasha, Gus and Mr. Kate, maybe not in that order. Have a happy week.
