Random 5 for February 9, 2025 – Electricity, politics, superfoods, Super Bowl, snow

That’s different! – I had to buy a new electric toothbrush. It didn’t come with a standard electric plug. It came with a USB cable but no charging block. My hearing aids came like that too. I guess that’s the new thing. I bought a wall plug charger with four ports to accommodate all these new gizmos. My cell phone charges wirelessly on my monitor bottom. Life is changing.

People are nuts – We have a “next door” social media thread. Someone posted that Costco was incredibly busy last Sunday. No parking, lines out the door, that sort of thing. My thought was that the French toast people were stocking up (you know picking up milk, bread and eggs for storms). There is a lot going on with today’s Super Bowl and the impending storm we had last week. It turned into a political brawl about avoiding tariffs. I’m going with storm and football! I don’t think most people are smart enough to know how to avoid tariffs. It all gives me a headache.

I’m doomed – I read an article on the best “superfoods.” Most of it is stuff I don’t like or never heard of. There is no way I’m eating canned sardines. My mother liked them but not me. The list included strange grains and something like yogurt but wasn’t. The good stuff I like are peanuts, colorful fruits, and mushrooms. They also recommended freeze dried fruit. I’ve never seen that in the grocery store, but it sounds interesting. I didn’t see my “normal foods” on the list. Potato chips must be good for you somehow, it’s a vegetable! Pizza wasn’t on the list either. Seriously, it’s made of grains, vegetables and cheese! What’s not to love?

A free pass – Today is the Super Bowl, the ultimate football game. Our local team is in it so it’s especially exciting. More importantly, today is a free pass to eat all those naughty foods that you don’t eat during the year. We don’t do that here as we eat whatever we want all the time so it’s just a normal food day for us. We’ll even have a salad which is unheard of at the Super Bowl parties. (For the record, pasta loaded with mayonnaise is not a salad!)

Dang weather – February is our snowiest month and this year that’s holding true. We had some very mild years that have spoiled us. Overnight we had a little snow with sleet and freezing rain. From the forecast it looks like snow every second or third day for the 10-day forecast. It’s going to be a long winter.

So how was your week?

  1. You sure are having a winter, Kate! I watch the national news and see the storms and I am cold just watching! You know, that super foods list keeps changing. I think the more whole foods we eat the better, and I do a good job of eating plenty of grains, fruit and vegetables. But I, too, draw the line at sardines. Not going to do it–even if it guaranteed longevity. I have limits!

And I wanted to tell you that I have a new kitty! I’ll blog about him soon. What wonderful company. 😉

  2. Pizza is definitely “normal” food and good for us. Our toppings are spinach, roasted red peppers and mushrooms. See? And my chocolate chip butterscotch oatmeal bars are sooooo good for us with all of that oatmeal.

Enjoy your celebration of the Eagles. I expected a better match-up, but Eagles dominated.

We have more snow/ice/rain/sleet on the way here too. Ahhhh, winter. Stay safe and warm and plugged in!

  3. February seems to be the coldest, wettest month here in Israel too. These are “the latter rains” of Deuteronomy 11, 14.

Superfoods – well, obviously chocolate. Cocoa beans grow on trees, don’t they, so that makes them a fruit. They use that to make chocolate. Chocolate is, therefore, a fruit and by definition, healthy. I thought everyone knew that (lol)!

    • I love your thinking! Chocolate makes everything better. It’s a medicine. Some years are drier but not this one! We had a dry fall (and everyone was complaining). Now we are having a wet February (and everyone is complaining). 🙂

  4. Wow…technology is so far ahead of my capacity to understand – I’ll just remain in the dark ages and enjoy the tech-less life I lead for now anyway. LOL We had power outage (and a freezing house) due to downed power lines in the entire area one day this past week……lasted ALL DAY and into the night and it’s the first time I had to resort to wearing socks to bed – what a pleasant surprise to wake up during the night and find POWER back. Tomorrow we expect 4-6 more inches of snow. I’m SOOOO ready for Spring to spring back into my life! I agree about NextDoor…..here it’s 100% whiners and asking silly questions.

    Hugs, Pam

    • I couldn’t resist so I checked nextdoor for opinions on the half-time show. They were all over the place. I love that people think their opinion is the RIGHT one. Makes me laugh. I read about your outage. I don’t like a cold house. We have a fireplace but it only heats the room it’s in. The thing about an outage is that I keep forgetting how much stuff is powered by electricity. I think I’ll do something only to realize that whatever it is needs electricity too.

  5. I hate that about charging plugs now. Not everything needs to be a USB! We watched the Super Bowl too. We don’t generally watch football, but my Mom is a fan. We were more or less rooting for the Eagles too, even though our real team is the Packers 🙂 Our weather is weird. Mostly pretty cold, but very little snow.

  6. I loved sardines when I was a kid. I remember my Dad would open a tin and we’d share it. I haven’t had it since, but I do like mushrooms and fruit. Also have to have potato chips once in awhile too.

  7. Our Walmart was very crowded yesterday. I assumed it was storm and Superbowl, never gave tariffs a thought. We don’t watch The Superbowl, but I will take the free pass for snacks. 🙂

  8. I think Woody, our local woodchuck, whom we Michiganders praise for her predicting abilities had an off year. We had the second bout of freezing rain yesterday on top of a quick few inches of snow – the first icy mess is still there, making the driveway treacherous and like you we have snow several days this week, maybe a storm on Wednesday. I hope I get back to the Park before Spring, but I’m not taking any chances this time … the path was icy before the freezing rain arrived. I once read that pizza was one of the healthiest foods as it encompasses all major food groups… they didn’t say anything about how many pieces though. 🙂 Once I was looking to up my calcium intake without supplements and saw all the raves about sardines being good for this … nope, my father ate them on toast and he also liked pickled herring. My mom always said “Linda and I won’t fight you for either – they’re all yours.” I just read about chia seeds today … I’ve never had them, but the article looked interesting about how good they are for you with no side effects. First the manufacturers eliminate the manuals or give you a one-page fold-out primer in ten languages and now no charging block. Ridiculous!

    • That’s a lot of snow! We had about 2 inches with an ice topping overnight but the temps went to the mid 30s so we let nature do the driveway clearing. More snow this week though and we may not be so lucky!

  9. Kate, we are rooting for KC! Missour-ee is home. I will probably fall asleep on the couch! Homemade ribs sound good. The whole plug in thing for the toothbrush and hearing aids sounds too techie. I hope my electric toothbrush never dies! The dang tariffs…. I am so tired of it all. I have a closet full of TP, Missour-ee wine and Kinder chocolate bars.

  10. I like peanuts, colorful fruit, and mushrooms, too. I also eat canned sardines. I kinda like them. Of course, I’m a big lover of all seafood. My 28-year-old grandson has become interested in cooking. Now he’s pizza dough that includes some veggies. It seems like a lot of work just to get your vegetables.

  11. I haven’t bought any electronic gadgets that don’t come with a standard plug, so your new toothbrush situation is news to me. I like the look of that charger and am sure I can adapt.

  12. Hi, Kate – I bought a new electric toothbrush 6 months ago. It came exactly like yours – just a cable to plug in. Not only that, the toothbrush lasted barely 6 months before it totally blew up (and I hadn’t filled in the warranty card). Wishing your new toothbrush much better longevity! ❤

  13. That charger is a new one on me. I am with you on not liking sardines. I generally read about super foods but tend to eat what I like and still eat healthy. Potato chips are essential. I hope your snow storm is not too bad and your team wins the super bowl.

  14. Will you think less of me when I say, I love sardines? My favorites come from Portugal in lemon and olive oil. I’m swooning just telling you about them.

And as far as storm sell-outs go, it’s like the Cuban Missile Crisis around here. The shelves are bare. I told the manager at Gristides, be an ideal time to paint them. He missed the joke.

  15. Hope the snow isn’t too bad-Feb. is one of our driest months. And it’s doggone freezing cold. Winter is back.

NextDoor has morphed into such a cesspool of Karen’s and whiny busybodies who seemed to thrive on churn and fear. I have to avoid it like the flu-it’s too toxic.

Stay warm and enjoy the Kitten halftime show at the Puppy Bowl.
