Random 5 for July 3rd – Inspiration, hearing, elections, attitude, birthdays

What’s next? – Whenever I think I will run out of things to write about, something happens. I anticipated an uninspiring week leading up to the holiday weekend. Then I had my garden ravaged (update – cucumber plant history, zinnias almost gone) and an unwanted intimate relationship with a tick. Here’s hoping for a little less drama with my inspiration. Perhaps I could write as an observer. Is this just me or does this happen to you?

What did you say? – After a few years of putting it off, I had a hearing test this week. I am on that brink. The audiologist said that my hearing isn’t bad enough but hearing aids would tweak it. He compared me to a trial attorney who has my level of hearing loss. The attorney needed to hear what people were whispering in the courtroom so he got them. I decided that I would rather not hear what people are whispering about me. Maybe in a year or two….

What I love about election years? – Nothing!!!! I consider blogs a polite forum where people share stories and experiences. It’s a place for writing skills. Facebook is the place to tell us where you are eating and how you just washed your hair. It’s also where people post “strange” or rude and crude things. I follow a few bloggers who write about political issues. I am always appalled when someone leaves an inflammatory comment. If you are not in agreement move on or comment in a concise civilized way based on proven facts or policy (not conjecture or folklore). I can guarantee your inane rant will not convince anyone. It makes you look like an “a**hole.”

The things that soften my heart – I was in back of a young woman at the Starbucks drive-through. She was annoying. Staring at her lap she would fail to move up as cars were putting in their order. Then I noticed a dog screen between the front driver section and the back of her SUV. Hmmm….maybe there’s a dog. There wasn’t but I felt my heart soften for a fellow animal lover even if she had no drive-through courtesy whatsoever.

Tom-2016Happy birthday bro! – My brother turned 86 this past weekend. I have to remember to be nice to him. You never know where we all will be next year. (He’s perfectly healthy. I, however, may get killed waiting in line for my Starbucks!)

So how was your week?

  1. I have had to hide the comments of a few of my Facebook friends recently. I read their political vitriol and I admit it begins to wear on me and I think less of them. I’m not eager to share my political views, let alone my rants! When the time is right there are certainly some sophisticated hearing devices! Do get a good one!

  2. The Book of Face… I use it to get to all things CAT and horse. I don’t talk politics, in fact I hardly ever post to my wall or whatever the heck it is called and I don’t take selfies or bore people with stories about ME ME ME! I have 18 friends who like CATS and/or horses. I did not know you did The Book of Face… 😀 Happy Birthday to your brother! We just gave The Mama a Jitterbug phone for her birthday yesterday and she has hearing aids and the Jitterbug is a miracle for her. I know that you do not need that but thought I might mention it for anyone reading that might need one for a hearing impaired friend or family person. I hardly ever wander around the Tiny Ten anymore because of TICKS! Enjoy your 4th of July today!

  3. I just went to visit old friends (and I do mean “old”). They have been married 72 years. He is 98 and still driving and takes no meds, and she is 92 and beautiful. Neither one of them hear well so it is a shouting session during visits. Gloria says, “Do not lament what you can’t do, but think about what you CAN do.” i need to visit them more often.

  4. I was appalled when after driving an hour went to the bathroom and noticed a large mole n my inner thigh! I was twenty minutes from a good friend who grew up in the country, so I knew she could remove it for me properly since I couldn’t reach it properly. Boy was that embarrassing!
I agree I had politics! Said!
Had my hearing chocked 15 years ago. Didn’t need hearing aids yet.
Love babies, children, critters, nature, trees and people. Lol

    • I went to the bathroom at a restaurant a few years back and one fell into the toilet bowl when I pulled my clothes down. Freaked me out. I was carefully inspecting my thighs and abdomen for a possible friend.

  5. I’m not much of a Facebook fan to start with… but I will not discuss politics or religion on that forum… consider it insensitive. Been having hearing tests for years as I don’t hear well when there is ambient noise (like at parties)… my hearing tests are always perfect! As I explain to the technicians, they are testing me in deadly quiet conditions! Duh!! I even need subtitles for the TV these days…

    • It’s the same in my case. I can hear vocabulary sounds well as long as there isn’t background noise. There are aids that can block out that noise. They just cost an arm and a leg! (and maybe a 401(k))

      • The tech actually gave me a sheet of paper with instructions to hand to people to tell them to look at me, to enunciate, to speak up… yes I am going to hand instructions to people I meet at a party! I’ll keep my arm and a leg and avoid parties!

  6. Happy Birthday to your brother, he looks great for 86!!
Like you, I really don’t like election years and this one in particular has irritated and depressed me. It’s okay to share opinions on these blogs, just do it in a respectful manner.

  7. The only thing my garden likes to grow is grass. I am so using it for sod replenishment in other areas now. I have temporarily given up on FB. I still use twitter. Somehow it is a little easier to see nasty name calling and bullying from people I have not become “friends” with. 8)

  8. Hearing aides are expensive, no question, and if you can put it off, I say yay to that.

This election is really getting to be a bore. Between the New York Post going after Hillary about her email issues, and Trump trumping like a trumpet out of tune…can never resist an alliteration…I’ve had it. Will still vote even though, I’ve had it. And as far as those fiery comments go, this is America…we can agree to disagree. I have an asshole on my site that, anytime I post anything remotely political, writes a mean comment. He went after Top once because he didn’t agree with something she said. I wonder what it’s like being such a schmuck. But on to brighter things like…

Happy Birthday to your brother. I think the banks should be closed, for him as well as the 4th. 🙂

  9. There are people I have met that I am certain I would a) never have met, b) never have been friends with if they hadn’t had a dog. And my life would have been emptier, I think.

On the other hand, the way some people treat their dogs makes me not want to be friends with them. Or throttle them.

    • I hear you. I adore my cats but they don’t have their own clothes or stylist. Of course, they are cats and wouldn’t tolerate that nonsense anyway. The best thing I have gotten out of blog friends is that I am not alone. Things like not watching movies where animals die. I always thought I was weird because if the movie is well done, isn’t that what counts? I find out I am not alone on many levels. Affirmation is always great.

    • They are not near the ponds or the frogs would eat them. They are in the back shrub row that occasionally needs some work. They are also not at the garden because I keep it cleared of weeds so that’s another safe place. Just don’t go into the hedgerow without covering and chemicals.

  10. You are so right about this dreaded election and the amount of arguments/opinions. It’s awful! Just post your food photos and move along.
Happy birthday to your brother, who looks freaking amazing for 86! Honestly, I’ll take whatever he’s doing to go please.
    Enjoy the 4th!

  11. Thanks for the tribute! Maybe I’ll save you a big slice of my next sour cherry pie. The season for local sour cherries is rather short. Be nice to me and maybe … .
Hearing aids will not restore your hearing, they help somewhat, but not totally. Specialist will till you they will, but after twenty five years, I still won’t go to plays because of the low level of dialogue. They have improved over the years, all but the price, that is. They’re still $3K a pop. Double that when you consider your spouse. They offer no “buy one, get one!” We need a “breakthrough” in manufacturing. We could buy 3 or 4 good computers for the price of one hearing aid. Go figure!

  12. Since my birthday last December, I’ve kept my self-promise to stay off Facebook all of this year till after the upcoming November election. I’ve thankfully missed all those nasty comments. Of course, I’ve also missed some good stuff too. Social networking is such a slippery slope.

  13. I’m pretty sure that hearing aids are in my future too. The only reason that I’m putting them off is that they are so darned expensive. I agree with you about political arguments in social media. No one’s mind will be changed, especially when the commenter is mean, insulting, or condescending. You are right… best to just move on. Happy birthday to your brother!
