Is it the end of the line?

Maxine - my opinionFor the past two days I have been trying to write a post. Every idea I had, I already wrote about. Sometimes I forgot I wrote about it but the words were so familiar in my head that I searched my blog. Dang! There it was! I wrote about it two years ago!

So, does that mean I have written about everything there is to write about? Do I need to change the purpose of my blog?

Maxine - coffeeWhat, you didn’t know I had a purpose? Of course I do. My purpose is to make you laugh….usually. Occasionally I stick a serious post in there to make sure you are not sleeping but my goal is to make you laugh or remember or relate or challenge.

My posts are not self-help or do-good stories. There are folks who do that much better than me. I would have a hard time not including little snarky comments. It would be like Maxine writing a self-help book.

Maxine - power pointI don’t post craft ideas or recipes. Again others do that so much better.

I like to write about the challenges and amazement of everyday life and of course about life with four opinionated cats (who did volunteer to do a post) and a beloved husband.

I like to write about the good stuff and the stupid stuff (only funny stupid stuff though).

I like to write very simply with a little snark.

Nothing that gives headaches or makes you take your clothes off and punish yourself although that option is always open to you (preferably in the privacy of your home).

I am dry this morning. Have I run into the end of the line? Is this all there is?

pushpullclosedI doubt it.

My cat Morgan is chatting with the birds. The sun is shining. Temperatures are warming. There is the promise of spring in the air and with that comes an overload of ideas.

Stay tuned and in the meantime, enjoy Maxine!

  1. Not to worry. Some serious sunshine and warm temps will invite the Muse or the Amuse…whatever. Hey, who doesn’t get blogger fatigue? I pray for an idea to wake me!

    • Sunshine and warmth sound good. Today was gorgeous but “they” say it will get colder again later this week. I’d like to fast forward to May.

  2. Sometimes our creative wells just temporarily run dry! My big obstacle is at times thinking, “who in the heck will care about” this or that. What interests me, may only interest me. LOL! Remembering that it’s a blog, and that anything goes, helps! Just be you, Kate. Even reading how you feel you’re dry right now, was interesting! We’re all in this together! 🙂

    • I have written many a post and said, “Gosh, this is boring. Who is going to want to read this crap.” Sometimes I let it sit for a day, put in some funny stuff and let her fling. The really odd thing is that what I think are my best do not necessarily get the best traffic. If I write about the cats, my stats go crazy. Hmmm…maybe there is a message there.

  3. Shy? Me? heh heh

Anyhow, the Daily Word (Prompt) that WordPress puts out for its bloggers is very thought provoking. I have, on occasion when I’ve needed a nudge, used one, and it has turned out to be a great boost. Best of all, you can slant the prompt any way you want so it fits into almost any kind of blog with a purpose 🙂 If nothing else, find a method for collecting two or three words and start writing using those words. Something will push its way through the morass of words and ideas that are probably blocking the flow and, voila, you have a diamond in the making.

P.S. I find it hard to see you as dried up though.

    • Perhaps not quite dried up but just frustrated. I stay away from the daily prompts (probably foolishly). I followed some bloggers who start with, “Today’s daily prompt is xxxx and that reminds me of the time….” Always a turn off for me. I love the posts when I can’t tell it was developed from them. I think it should be woven in unobtrusively. Now announcing a photo challenge is always interesting because of the twist different bloggers use. I like doing the 5 random things when I am intellectually challenged because they are quick short paragraphs and I don’t have to develop anything.

      • Absolutely…I dislike blogs that start that way too. When it comes in an unobtrusive way, when the topic is a subject I am interested in, it often turns out well…sometimes not even following the main thread of the topic but sliding into another aspect. However, whatever works for you is the write…er, I mean right way to do it for you 🙂

  4. We’re all in this together Kate! I agree it’s hard to come up with stuff, but every once in a while something happens that is so funny or bizarre or both, and I think “I can’t wait to blog about this hot mess!” So it’s all worthwhile-and I love reading your stuff. So no quitting Cupcake.

  5. I think from now on I am going to say I gave them the “power point” instead of flipping them off! Yep I have been known to do that. But not for awhile. Must have been from moving out of the BIG City.

    • I don’t do it nearly as often as I used to. Perhaps I have more patience but it certainly like the power point description better than the finger.

  6. There’s a whole world of stupid out there, Kate.
You’ll have more ammunition in no time.

When ideas are FIRING with great rapidity, I start blog posts and leave them in draft form for “dry days.”

I loved your reference to Maxine writing a self-help blog. I think that would be great FUN to read . . . as are virtually all of your posts.

  7. It’s funny how ideas come to us one at a time. You’d think we’d be able to sit down and write a list of 15 or 20 topics and then work through them one at a time. It doesn’t work that way though–at least not for me. Right now I think I may have one idea. Don’t know what I’ll do after that.

    • It comes in spells. I’ll get a couple of ideas and I jot them down. Days, weeks or months later I go back to the list. Sometimes the ideas don’t seem so good then or I’m not in the mood for the topic. I’ll drag something in from somewhere and then wham! I will write out three posts in a row. I have a new respect for newspaper columnists who have to come up with ideas and write them (and they have a much more narrow focus for topics) three days a week.

  8. I think we all hit dry spells. Or tell the same story more than once. I love your posts and wish I had more time to read them in a timely manner. The hours in the day just pass by too quickly and I always feel like I am playing catch up, but when I do, it is nice to stop by here and enjoy that pause with you 🙂
In winter, I think we hibernate so much that we get inside our heads and warm houses and the stimulation of real life which stimulates our writing gets placed on pause. We must go out into the world and live in order to have aomething to write about but who wants to do that with -20 temperatures and 6 feet of snow? Or, in my case, torrential rain and endless mind numbing hours of studying for a stupid exam that I have no choice but to write! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  9. Kate … I’d say you accomplished your goal with this post. I did laugh as I read some of your post. Sometimes I feel dry, too. It’s either I have 3 ready to go or … Ack! Saturday’s coming and I need an idea for my blog. Keep up the great work.

As for that glass of wine, count me in. 😉

  10. You do make me laugh! And when you come to that place where you think you’re drained, something will strike when you’re not even thinking about it. I have no doubt there are more laughs in store for us. 🙂

  11. So you’ve finished peeling the first layer — maybe you’re just not sure how to start the next? Maybe you have ‘cared’ about making us laugh or smile. Maybe now you can explore, in writing, how your life has changed in what you’ve cared about over the decades. Why do you want to make us laugh? That’s probably a whole interesting exploration right there…. With your mind and writing, I’d love to see you pick an issue and ‘explore’ it. I’m not saying sell a point of view; I’m saying honestly explore it, the varied sides of it. You’d have joined a world dialogue of sorts, and I wonder who would explore it with you, because they don’t have the wherewithal to explore alone…..
