Random 5 for May 24, 2026 – Clothes, weather, flowers, blogs, statistics

Annual summer clothes cleanout – This week I tried on all my summer pants. I had already gotten rid of anything that didn’t fit or I didn’t like. Now I needed a different tactic because I had too many that I don’t wear but why? Zippers! Buttons! Snaps! Beautiful color but no stretch! I have been spoiled by athletic pull-on clothes with just enough stretch to make them comfortable and I always grab the comfortable stuff. Next week tops. I’ll eliminate any top that doesn’t cover my flappy upper arms and make me feel pretty! I’ve got a goal and new goalposts.

Power! – We are in a 3-day rainy period. We need the rain. I’m taking credit. While we were in the hot period a week ago, I changed from my winter purse to my summer one. (Not much of a purse person, I just do the 2-season change). Immediately the temperature dropped and the rain started. Maybe that’s my superpower.

We need the rain – But the bad news is that it battered down my beautiful irises. Luckily, I took some photos before the rain!

I learned something new! – Someone put a comment on a post requesting I “unsubscribe” them. I always thought you did that yourself. I asked WordPress how and I found that under Jetpack you can look at your subscribers and see if they are opening or clicking on your posts. You can also delete them. Anyhow the person only gave me a first name which made it difficult, but I deleted everyone with the same first name that didn’t open the posts hoping that she was there. This morning I got a message from her through the message feature on WordPress that gave me her full name. I must have deleted her because I couldn’t find any name that matched. Moral of the story is that if you want someone to remove you, give them enough information. I have over 16K subscribers so it’s a needle in a haystack!

On a related note – I never look at my statistics. I do this for myself. It’s a cheap form of therapy. I was amazed at how many hits I get in a day. Most readers are lurkers and don’t comment and that’s just fine. For some blogs, especially on Blogspot which I find hard to maneuver, I don’t comment either. All are welcome and when you are tired of posts about old people and cats, I will gladly remove you (which you can do yourself too)! 😊

So how was your week?

  1. I’m with you about getting rid of anything uncomfortable! I keep a few things around because – who knows? I might wind up in an office again at some point rather than at home where I can pretend I’m wearing office clothes.

  2. Hah, well, I already told you in my post what my week was like. I hear you about the clothes. I am so spoiled, wearing only stretchy pants, loose tops, and in our summer heat here my dilemma is how to cover my upper arms and not pass out from the heat.

  3. That’s an interesting factoid about Jetpack. I had no idea. Sorry that someone wanted you to unsubscribe them. Kinda rude if you ask me but nothing surprises me about people’s behavior anymore. 16,000 followers is nothing to sneeze at. Kudos to you!

Sorry the rain flattened your irises. But the pre-rain picture is beautiful.

  4. Hmm, how rude. If you don’t want to read someone else’s blog, you unsubscribe yourself. Then their blog doesn’t show up in your feed anymore. She was asking you to unsubscribe her blog from you, so you couldn’t see her feed anymore. Which means she really just wanted to send you a message to let you know she was offended by something which is just petty. People are the worst. It’s a good thing you have a ton of followers and didn’t even notice her to begin with. Some people aren’t worth the time. I had someone once making nasty comments and bullying others on mine and threatened not to follow me anymore. I was like, please don’t follow me, I don’t want you on here creating drama! I do dread the really hot weather coming soon. I like it nice and cool. Gorgeous flowers.

    • There was a part 2 to the story. A few hours after I deleted her as a subscriber (which I acknowledged back to her) she asked me to resubscribe her. I can’t do that and told her so. I have no idea why and was trying to figure out if it was somehow a scam of some sort. I wasn’t offended. My blog isn’t of interest to everyone and that’s ok. I don’t understand the nasty comments you got. If you don’t like something, scroll on by. Life is too short.

  5. Irises are so beautiful. My neighbor across the street. My neighbor across the street had a few white and lilac colored irises. But they’re so delicate. The blooms didn’t last long.

We’re just starting to get warm weather, so I haven’t taken my winter clothes downstairs yet and brought up my summer clothes. Maybe next week I’ll go through them, try on the things I haven’t been wearing and see what to give away. Every time I do that I find some things that deserve to be worn that I’d forgotten about and others that don’t fit very well on my now older body.

    • It’s mostly my summer tops where I find one that I forgot about one and didn’t wear. I used to be a big shopper, going often and snagging bargains. I no longer have the interest so my wardrobe is slowly getting smaller. The iris season is short and we had both searing heat and long downpours that shortened it! I noticed today that my neighbor across the street, who has beautiful knockout roses has something going on with them. They look half dead. They should be starting to bloom. Sigh.

  6. I like the color combo for your Irises Kate. I’ve seen those colors together for impatiens too … they really stand out. I got something from WordPress over two days about “achievements unlocked”. I wrote and asked WP if it was SPAM. I got an AI answer that asked for a screenshot (which I had already sent them), then no further answer. However, I have since learned if you go to your “Achievements” area, you get all these badges for what you’ve accomplished in WP since Day #1. Who knew? I didn’t. Like you, I am not looking for this or subscribers as I write for fun. I enjoy putting together my posts and taking the photos. I don’t check statistics either and it were to do so, it may say I have a lot of subscribers, but I assure you that many people subscribed for a follow back or had a free blog and stopped blogging. I look way more popular than I really am.

    • For me, number of subscribers is less important than commenters who you know are active followers. We have a lot of the same bloggers we follow and at least one has died in the past year. I’ve lost more than that that I know. Some just ride into the sunset and I don’t know what happened to them. I am connect on Facebook to a blogger from the beginning who stopped blogging a long time ago. I get to see her family and know what she’s up to. She is also painting.

      • Yes, we do. I followed you because I asked Anne Mehrling for some suggestions of people to follow. I found her by accident due to the key word “walk” as she walked daily as did I. Subscribers are not accurate, where followers are. It’s good to stay connected on other social media. A long-time recipe blogger I follow has left after nine years and is now sharing her recipes on Facebook.

  7. Sorry about your irises.
My roses are coming into their own and I have a beautiful frilly peach one. Hubby has cut the grass this evening and knocked it, so all the petals have fallen off. Luckily I’d taken pictures before he started. Not posted them yet though.

  8. These are the loveliest photographs. That purple, Irises re they? really pops through the screen.

I just brought some size 0 dresses to the thrift shop I like to browse in. As slim as I am, my waist will never be quite that tiny again. When I popped in a week later, there was my dress featured on a mannequin with a belt around it. Never wore it with one. Funny to see it again, on sale. Love unloading things, especially for the greater good.

  9. Your flowers are gorgeous! I haven’t started the clothes swap yet but I did switch to my summer purse last weekend…..baby steps. I hate trying stuff on. Not sure why someone would ask you to unsubscribe them when they could do it themselves – was she trying to make a point?

  10. I’ve been doing the closet clean out also. The one thing I never get rid of is jeans. They always come back into fashion and it can be hard to find ones that fit. What’s hilarious to me are the way sizes have changed–my Gap jeans from over twenty years ago (size 12) are smaller by 2 sizes than today’s current size 12s.

    • I kept my LLBean knit jeans (with zippers). So comfy. They only made them a few years but I bought 5 pair. One is worn out but I still have 4. Yes, jeans are the hardest to find a good fit and you can’t go by size. Those jeans are an 8. My Chico’s are a 4. ????

  11. I haven’t done a closet cleanout for a while. You may have nudged me a bit to do that. Too HOT outside so staying in today. Noooooooo, not your irises! I am sorry, but why would someone request that you unsub them??? I hope it was done for a good reason and not in an unkind way. I love us old people and cats!

    • People subscribe in hopes that you will subscribe to their blog and up their stats. I don’t subscribe unless I am interested in a blog. My posts may not have been her interests! I wasn’t at all offended except that she gave me a first name only and a common one too. Does she think she is only subscriber with that name? Her email gave me her full name which would have made the first try easier for me.

  12. Those irises are gorgeous ! I’m in blog jail – WordPress (or SOMETHING) won’t let me work on my blog. I’m “dead in the water” as they say as far as producing a blog. Frustrating? You betcha. Spent hours on the computer with a WordPress AI Bot…..lots of “try this/that/the other” but no results. Taking the computer to the doctor this week to see if it’s the computer and not WordPress but it’s ONLY effecting WP. Anyway, sorry for the moan but blogging is my FUN. I miss it. Feels like I’ve lost a close friend. (sniff) Closet cleaning (since I can’t blog) may have to be my new therapy. I’ll give it a try!

    Hugs, Pam

  13. I cleaned out about 95% of my closet last week. All work clothes and such that I haven’t worn in 20 years and definitely don’t fit anymore. Didn’t even need to try them on since I am no longer that size anymore. It felt good to get them out of there and off to the donation center.
