Random 5 for May 17, 2026 – Weather, seasonal changes, happy, grateful, memories

My purple irises are starting to bloom! Yay!

Finally! — Yesterday was one of those “good to be alive” days. The weather was perfect. We have three days like that a year. Today we are going into a heat wave, but I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday (and I’ll enjoy today too!).

Change! – We finally switched our bedding from the flannel sheets to the silky summer ones. It was glorious climbing in bed last night. We are a little later this year, but the weather has been cool with the very occasional “seasonal” day. My cat Sasha likes the new summer sheets. They are easier for her to pull off and get me up at dark o’clock for breakfast!

Humble – I am always humbled when all is right here. It’s been busy and hectic (and it seems like someone is always ill) so throw in a gorgeous day with nothing but home chores to do and I am a happy camper. My neighborhood is all green and beautiful. My neighbors are great. I am blessed. Just to be sure I didn’t get too carried away, Sasha barfed this morning. She did it on the windowsill which is my least favorite spot to clean up.

Emotion – On my coffee run this morning, a song came on and my eyes welled up. I was 20 again. My mom was alive and my life was ahead of me. All my old friends were around (and alive!). I don’t know what brought it on. It was a familiar tune from my youth but not any of my all-time favorites. I’m running on emotion today. Great weather will do that for me. It may be a weepy day. I’m not doing an obit check on any old friends. No point in ruining the day with sadness.

I will let cartoons finish this post.

Really this is where I am today! No serious decisions please!

So how was your week?

  1. So glad you had such a lovely day! Perfect weather and all basically well is hard to beat. Those trips down memory lane can be painful but joyful too. All kinds of emotions there for sure. Neither of us is a hugger, but – hugs on you, Kate!

  2. Love it! Smiled all the way through your post! 😊Happy days are essential. Especially the days we choose not to not be a grown up. LOL!
I so know what you mean about eyes filling and not really knowing why. 💕

    • This is one of my favorite posts. All upbeat and rereading it I can feel the same emotions. Today is the annual boob squish. Not a fan but it did find my cancer so I’m faithful about it. Afterward I will reward myself with a Starbucks and feel good knowing it’s done. Today is a gorgeous day and all is right with the world.

Something like that happened to me yesterday at a Community Band Concert. A medley of ABBA tunes made me tear up. Not sure why. Like you, the tunes were familiar but not any all-time favorites. Nevertheless, a tidal wave of nostalgia swamped my boat for a bit. 😀

  4. What a wonderful cartoon. I’m glad that’s where you are right now.

I get weepy when I see a flash mob playing beautiful familiar orchestra music. Also, attending a ballet when the music begins and the dancers come on stage, something I haven’t done for a long time. I do love the old 60s music, but lately I’ve been getting more acquainted with the 80s. The 2020s don’t impress me from what I’ve heard.

  5. Our weather is hot, hot, hot today – two days ago I had on a Winter coat, hat and gloves! We have this three-day heat wave and severe weather Monday and Tuesday with 50-60 mph winds, so I did not uncover the air conditioner because the Maple seed “helicopters” are all flying around everywhere and I don’t want them falling into the A/C grille. The tower fan is not helping as it’s 80 in the house! I actually could have gone out today to a big park – it is picture perfect, but they predicted storms by 2:00 so I did not go … the storms have not arrived yet. Sigh.

      • I hope you don’t have our storms – the wind was howling and torrential rains several times. It is now 81 in the house, but I’m not taking the lid off the A/C unit since we have a round or two tomorrow. Then we get chillier than normal, which suits me fine as the hot weather fueled the severe weather. A good weather day does equal all is right in the world – there are so few of them anymore.

          • I should move there – this turbulent weather is wearing me down! We had another bout of severe weather today at the heat of the day. I know there were wind gusts to 70 mph, but that was about 20 miles from me. We had a little hail and high winds and torrential rain which lasted about 45 minutes. I hope this breaks the heat – our real feel was 95 today. Our cold front today brings overnight temps to 40! The weather is just crazy and the weatherman says “it’s Spring, the temps fluctuate” … no way did we have these dangerous storms on a near-everyday basis.

  6. I get weepy with music from the 70s and 80s often. But it is mostly happy tears. I am an emotional kind of gal. I know how you feel about having a day when it all goes right… it’s just overwhelming in a good way. I love those days. Yes, no serious decisions today, please. Or how about putting serious decisions on snooze for 6 months or so. Sunday is my favorite day of the week. Let’s keep the goodness going!

  7. I will admit to occasional tear-filled flashes of the past coming to me on the radio but I balance those out with smiles from the songs of the past that were particularly FAB moments. That’s life I think – a mish-mash of good/bad, happy/sad, etc. We’re having some summery days right now but end of the week looks like SEVERAL STEPS BACKWARD into way cool. Obviously the worlds’ weather is as confused as we are about things right now (haha). Sending you a big bag of HAPPY.

    Hugs, Pam

    • You made me check the weather forecast! Yikes! Again we are going from the 90s to the 60s. Not happy about that! I love happy! Today is a glorious day, warmer than yesterday but still great.

  8. The weather is pretty glorious in New York City at the moment. It’s amazing the difference it makes when it’s sunny and clear.

I still have my trusty L.L. Bean flannels on my bed, but pima cottons are in the wings. Nothing like fresh sheets.

    Regards to Sash and Gus.

  9. I really like the style of this post. It lets you get at least a few of the gazillion thoughts that are running through your head, out for the world to see. I spend more time thinking about what to post than I do actually posting. lol

  10. Love the cartoon. I’m running on emotion too. Went in to bring Hamlet his breakfast this morning and he’d gotten his cone and donut off. Looked at his hind end, which he had cleaned thoroughly, and it is all healed. Woo hoo!! Posted him on Petfinder today. Time to find him a home. Happy, happy.

  11. Silky sheets! Ooh, fancy! We had a couple of shock hailstorms last week, so it’s still cold here. One morning Catorze woke me up at 5am to sleep on my stomach, and I was actually grateful for his warmth.
