Random 3 for September 22, 2024 – Covid, car damage, seasons

It’s just three thoughts today. I’m wiped out of ideas.

They’ve come a long way baby. – Today we got our covid vaccines. I remember the first covid shots. Papers to fill out and long waits. Today’s appointment and paperwork was completed online. We were in and out with band aids on our arms in minutes. Hopefully we won’t have a reaction. This is my eighth vaccine for covid. So far, I haven’t had it (gotta go knock on wood). I don’t know it that’s because I’m conscientious about the vaccines or a germaphobe prone to a lot of hand washing.

Yikes! Just yikes! – About two months ago I scraped my passenger side car against a guard rail. (Wasn’t my fault. I was avoiding getting hit.) To me it looked like most of it could be buffed out. There was a wrinkle on the passenger door edge. Maybe a little crumple. Tiny. Small. My (very naïve) thought was that they could smooth it out (maybe with an iron?) as it really wasn’t much. This week I took it in for an estimate. I have $6K worth of damage. My eyes glazed over as each process was explained to me. Parts had to be taken apart and since some parts had sensors, they had to be recalibrated. The “skin” would need to be replaced. (I didn’t even know my car had a skin.) They need to give you estimates with a side of an anti-depressant and a winning lottery ticket.

Fall (Courtesy of S. Mailloux from Flickr)

Happy fall! – I know some of you get excited this time of year. It’s pretty and if we’re lucky, the weather is pleasant. It’s always a busy time for me. Mice trying to sneak in. Ants perusing the house for a winter vacation. Weeds growing wild. Yard clean-up. Getting out the “heavy” clothes. Lots of “work type” stuff. This is the time of year that I think about that nice old folks’ home with a rocking chair on the front porch and not many responsibilities. It’s looking good. I wonder how many cats I can bring.

So how was your week?

  1. Yikes on the car estimate! That seems awfully high given the damage you sustained. What a racket. I wonder if it’d be less expensive if paid out of pocket. Now I get why insurance is so outrageous.

My wardrobe has to work in at least 3 seasons or out it goes. It’s easier to slip on a sweater than maintain a whole autumn wardrobe.

    • I have a few very light tee shirts for summer but I tend to run cold so even with a long sleeve for fall, I may add a hoodie. My spring-fall clothes work until the hottest days of summer. Winter is for sweatshirts.

  2. Oh, my! I would have fainted when they told me that price. Then maybe if I bump my head on the way down, they will feel bad and lower it a tad. I was just thinking I need to get my Covid shot and flu shot soon! We’re starting to get bugs in the house. The cats catch some, and some they don’t. Time to call Orkin.

  4. I’ve managed to avoid catching COVID thus far too. I’m mostly a homebody and I’ll mask on planes. I also wear a mask in retail or crowded spaces during cold and flu season. I haven’t had any communicable illnesses since a cold I caught in February 2020.

    • I’m not susceptible to respiratory illnesses. If there is a GI bug going around I can guarantee that I’ll get it. I don’t think I’ve ever had the flu but I’m not taking any chances. At some point, my luck (and my body) will change and I want to be prepared.

  5. Happy first day of Autumn, Kate.

I change my clothes for winter and summer, bringing some upstairs and others down. I didn’t wear many of the summer clothes this year. It’s not because I have so many; it’s because I dress in the same old comfortable stuff most of the time.

I do like fall. It’s looking good so far.

    OMG! $6K for a scrape! That’s terrible.

    • I go from tee shirts and capris to sweatshirts and jeans. Almost everything is in my closet except my boots. I haven’t worn dress boots in years. This year I may leave them packed away until I need them.

  6. I got my Covid/flu shot the same time almost two weeks ago. I got them earlier than usual, but have a dentist appointment soon and it’s the one place I can’t be masked up, so because I also am a bit of a germaphobe, I worry about going. I’ve also had all the Covid vaccines and been lucky so far to escape Covid. I am amazed at the amount to fix your car’s boo-boo. Just ridiculous and I had no idea cars had “skin” either. I was complaining as I got a car wash, a simple, no-frills car wash is $10.00 now. My car will be 15 years old on Tuesday with a whopping 13,084 miles on it. I dread when I will have to get a new car on many levels.

    • I have 12K miles on my 3 year old car! Simple car washes are $10 here too maybe unless you do it yourself. I liked the old places where some people at the end cleaned out your inside. Now you have to clean out your own inside and the price is the same.

      • I have a long way to catch up with you! We don’t have that little nicety any more with the cleaning the inside either. I have a trickle charger on my car – it is plugged into the battery on one end and plugged into the garage wall outlet on the other end – this is all the time, except when I’m using it. So last year I got a nice wax job and tire gloss and the wax was too shiny and the trickle charger kept falling off the car and either landed on the greasy tire gloss or onto the floor. I have a special Battery Tender extension cord that runs from the grille, over the roof, onto the trunk and into the plug. For years I was sprayed with Diazinon in the garage for creepy crawlies. So the cord would fall on the floor … the toxic chemicals are inside the garage on the floor, so I then needed gloves to handle the cord. So I got a new extension cord, no wax which is too bad as it looks brand-new and for $10.00 you don’t get an underbody wash, so it’s not good for Winter. Telling the car wash guy to charge me for the deluxe wash, but hold the tire gloss and wax is like Jack Nicholson’s dialogue about a side order of toast and the chicken salad sandwich in the movie “Five Easy Pieces”.

  7. I’ll be getting my Covid shot soon too. I usually have sore arm, headache and a few chills, but feel fine the next day. I’m looking forward to seeing the fall leaves, but it’s still warm here and none so far. What a shock with your car. I hope you can find a cheaper price.

  8. My husband and I plan to get our Covid and flu jabs soon. I am not looking forward to the after-cruds we’ve experienced in the past. I hope your day remains symptom-free.

Although we don’t get crazy seasonal changes, it definitely feels like fall is in the air. I love this time of year… the kids are back in schools and the tourists are gone. That I can get my cooler weather clothes out is a bonus.

  9. We need to schedule the Covid shot along with the flu and the RSV. The list gets longer each fall. I’ve had Covid once and will attempt to avoid a second go round. Ah, car repairs. We had to have ours repaired this spring. The price was high, but the wait was worse. They had the car in the shop for five weeks which got to be really inconvenient. Fall is my least favorite season – too darn much work outside and inside when you live in cold country.

    • There is a lot of work and it’s not the happy work of spring. Five weeks? I’ll have a loaner but I really like my car better than any loaner. They told me 10 days (which is 2 weeks as a baseline).

  10. We both had mild reactions to this booster. Mostly just a feeling of fatigue that lasted a day or so. Not too bad. OMG, that’s an awful surprise for you about the car. I’m so sorry! Second opinion somewhere else?? – Marty

  11. The height of Covid comes to mind, how hard it was to get a vaccine appointment. Now CVS textes you when it’s in, like it’s zucchini season.

I have a driver’s license but haven’t driven forever, New York girl that I am. And as far as that rocker at the old age home goes, not after all you went through for that new bathroom. See, that’s what you’d be taking with you. Was it a sink that took so long to install?

What was that Gracie? You’d like it if she moved into the Ritz? Now there’s an idea. 🙂

  12. Every dang thing has gone up! I would have made a comment about the ridiculousness of the estimate for your car but this week we got an estimate for a hurricane impact door with full view glass… same kind of door we replaced 3 years ago for 1400 bucks. New door is now 3500 bucks. They are still whining about the hinges and glass and cost of their suppliers since covid and Hurricane Ian. Lead time is 16 weeks. Sorry you have to have your vehicle fixed… that estimate is ludicrous! Somebody is making a lot of money!

    • They say not. I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m only liable for my $500 deductible. I was debating whether to report it to my insurance or just pay myself (thinking it would be well under $1K — wow how naive was I?). My insurance is taking care of this.

  13. Yeah – assistant living is starting to sound pretty dang good…..actually it’s fairly ridiculous for us to stay in a three story house with an acre of land at our age PERIOD unless we spend thousands for yard work and adding an elevator (just kidding) and a housecleaner……..I “get it” about downsizing even though my husband thinks the magic fairy will come visit us and make us younger or the house smaller. (just kidding again) My one and only car boo boo was when I was distracted by my husband in the garage and forgot to put up the garage door before I began backing out. That was some years ago but it wasn’t a cheap fix repairing the trunk of the car. EEEK.

  14. Now that I live in Florida, I love this time of year ~ starting to get cooler, but no really cold weather on the horizon.

If it was just me, I would give serious consideration to a CCC, but BFF balks at the idea. He doesn’t want to admit to being “older.” Silly ego!

    • I sure hope not. There are two heavy guard pieces that they say they need to replace and I don’t think they do. It’s 3 years old. I don’t expect it to look like it just rolled out of the factory. Just fix my crinkle so it doesn’t rust. Actually, the paint is scraped bare.

  15. I think a lot these days about that “old folks’ home” now that it’s named better – independent living, assisted living, etc. A room where I could have my own furniture to make it feel ‘homey’, meals planned out and prepared for me, people to socialize if I choose to, or a door on my room if I choose not to, not having to dust and vacuum and clean (at least in assisted living), not separate utility bills to pay. And, of course, they provide transportation to visits to places like a doctor’s office and even plan outings. That means no vehicle to maintain or spend money on. (By the way, I hope you got a second opinion on that estimate!)

Got my COVID booster late August. I’m really not out and about around a lot of people, and I always have a mask in my purse if needed. You’re right about how different the process is now – make an appointment, verify your insurance hasn’t changed, get your arm swiped clean and a quick shot (I no longer even feel them) and adios, amiga ’til the next time.

I giggle about the necessary changes in clothing so many people go through at the changing of the seasons. I don’t have very many clothes so that between dresser drawers and closet, I can reach for the appropriate season/temperature between them! I have never really dressed for style and except for a few thrift store tops, I haven’t bought any “new” clothing, except for underthings, in over 5 years!

  16. I got some scrapes maybe 2-3 years ago, when the garbage truck scraped the side of my car in the wee hours of the morning. Pretty obvious since the paint left was Waste Management’s green and yellow. It was outrageously expensive and the insurance company for WM was a total nightmare. I no longer park my car of the street, at least not on the days WM comes.

    • Since the “other” drive took off, it’s my insurance paying and they are easy to deal with (at least so far). My first estimate is with a place that isn’t one of their “preferred” placed (which are a half hour away) so we’ll see how this goes. My place said they would work with them and honor their estimate.

      • We have found our own insurance easy to deal with so far as well, but the WM one was a nightmare. The shop that did the repairs said they won’t accept insurance coverage by them ever in the future.
