Random 5 for July 28, 2024 – Normal, respite, August, availability, summer

Version 1.0.0

We’re back! – After six plus weeks of sleeping upstairs in a bed that’s too small and a room that’s too hot, we moved back into our bedroom. The bathroom renovation is not done but most of it is. The dirty part is (hopefully). It’s getting painted this week and the plumber will do his thing. Then it’s installing grab bars and towel racks. It’s been a long haul.

Quiet please! – One day when the contractors were coming and going and making a racket, the beloved husband and I decided to go out for a pizza lunch. We go to the same place, so the people know us. It’s friendly, good and enjoyable. Except that one day when we needed peace and quiet. There was a screaming toddler that was far worse than contractor noise. It was the nails on chalkboard noise. It’s a pizza place so we don’t expect it to be childless, but this poor thing was over the top. We quickly ate and left. Sometimes there is no peace for the weary.

There’s something about August – It’s almost impossible to get appointments. I couldn’t get a haircut appointment for four weeks. By then I will have one of those trendy hairdos with hair flopping all over. I just need to shave my sides! (Nope, not gonna happen!) I need to remember that for next year (but I won’t).

The other one – was my dentist. I needed to get a tooth checked. It looks like I have a crack but it’s subtle. I was hoping to check it out before it turned into the Grand Canyon. Since there was no pain, I couldn’t call it an emergency. That took five weeks for the appointment. There is a hairline crack, but nothing can be done about it until there’s a crater.

Gotta love Dave Barry

The beginning of the end – While July slips silently slips away, August is chucked full of events. Locally it’s a month for festivals, church fairs, outdoor concerts and vacations. We are having our family reunion next weekend. We’ll hit a concert or two and enjoy life (after a summer of disruption with our bath renovation). I’m looking forward to it all and will work to embrace it with vigor! Then it will be PSL time. That’s pumpkin spice latte for you neophytes. No, I don’t like them, but they clog the works at my local Starbucks. I cannot understand how some people only drink coffee for a few months in the fall.

So how was your week?

  1. The Dave Barry quote is perfect. I know what you mean about trying to get August appointments. The back-to-school crowd seems to dominate during the month, leaving the rest of us waiting.

    • I hope I have the energy to enjoy it. July has been exhausting mostly with anxiety but with actual work too. The last two nights were the best sleep ever (so why did I wake up at 6 a.m.?).

  2. I don’t like pumpkin spice in my coffee either! I love fall and pumpkins, but God help the person who screws with my coffee. Glad your bathroom is almost done!!! Yay!

    • I like my coffee either black or with a shot of chocolate, not too sweet. I don’t drink the other stuff sweetened with all sorts of sugary syrups. I will do the occasional cappuccino. I like espresso.

        • I love the idea of summer. There is so much going on but the last few years the heat has been extraordinary. I really enjoy the transitional period between summer and fall. It’s still warm but not stinking hot. Everything is still beautiful and there are a lot of outdoor activities going on. It’s the shortening days I’m not fond of.

  3. Congratulations on being almost there! I hope the painting and the punch list finish up quickly and everybody can get settled down again.

My mom made appointments for all of us kids for August dentists and doctors so that everyone got them done before school started. I remember waiting all afternoon for our turn. I wouldn’t advise seeing a dentist in August. I don’t know, of course, how common that is now.

And hugs to you with Gracie. I should have mailed to you some samples of the “rotisserie” style chicken that the churus people made. Zoe liked several of them, at least for a while. I hope she will keep eating the fancy feast variety. It’s far easier than picking up real rotisserie chicken every week.

    • I’ve had some success with canned chicken for people. It’s cat food she’s not fond of. Haircut appointments are like that too. All the kids are getting them for school. My hair is like a wild woman. It was perfect last week. Funny how it can change in a day!

  4. As much as I love fall, I don’t like anything pumpkin flavored. Around here it seems hard to get an appointment any time of year. Glad you will have your room back now. 🙂

  5. I had to cancel a dental appointment for an eye injection. The next available appointment for the dentist is this fall. They said they’d call when they had a cancellation, and it has been over a month already with no call.

  6. Appointments. Now, there’s a topic that can stand alone. Making one a year in advance works great, just don’t need one in between. They’re going to have to come up with a drop in ‘urgent care’ for dental needs pretty soon. Enjoy your larger and cooler bedroom.

  7. Love Dave Barry. Although I have to admit that on Friday I left something out of my order and had to be prompted. I’ve been making my own coffee lately and was a little slow. But I’m not a pumpkin spice latte person.

Congratulations on getting your bedroom back. You deserve lots of fun events next month.

I don’t know how my mom let it be known that we were to be quiet in public, but we got the message. Once in the grocery store, my little sister had a bad fall, and instead of crying, she ran to Mom and socked her.

  8. Great news that you are back in your bedroom where the air is cool! It’s almost done, Kate. I am definitely on the bus with everyone that says they prefer to eat at home in peace and quiet. I am sure it has something to do with getting used to ordering out and bringing a great dinner home during the plague.
Fingers crossed for you that all stays on track with the reno and you get your house back and a new more functional bathroom! And the Sassy cats get their house and peeps back too!

    • The cats were ecstatic when we opened the bedroom door. Morgan “helped” us put the bed together and was napping as soon as the bedspread was smoothed. I don’t enjoy eating out like I used to unless we are meeting friends. It’s gotten very expensive and after a few years of pandemic quiet, I find restaurants noisy. I’m getting to prefer a nice lunch to dinner out. Less people, less cost and the portion is better suited to me.

  9. Pumpkin spice latte again? You mean, you’ll do that again? (just kidding!) Congrats on the almost-completed bathroom. You must be so relieved to see the end of the project. Please post pics soon! – Marty

  10. Great you have your bedroom back. I agree, it’s no fun eating in a noisy restaurant. I’ve had that a few times too. I enjoy having a meal delivered and relaxing at home. That’s a good quote.

  11. So glad the bathroom reno is moving along! Hope the rest of it happens quickly. I love PSLs! The entire rest of the year I drink plain coffee, but autumn is for delicious, delicious PSL!

  12. Kids screaming gets on my nerves, especially when the parents either ignore it or are so awful to the kid you know exactly why they are screaming. Rarely did we take Baby D to any restaurant that wasn’t a McDonald’s Playland. If he screamed there, he was in good company.

  13. It is probably because we live in a pretty small town but we don’t have a problem getting appointments and haircuts but our small town is – like most of them do – becoming larger so that issue will no doubt be in our future! I cannot stand noisy restaurants. I love kids but I’ve not quite understood why parents will let their kids scream and have fits and just go on having conversations acting like they don’t even hear a thing. Anywho – I will say that most of the places we go are NOT like that! Thankfully. WOO HOO on the “almost done” bathroom reno. More importantly – you have your bedroom back!! That’s fab. Better and more comfortable sleep and soon a NEW bathroom. Nice there are rewards reaped after going through the upheaval.

    Hugs, Pam

    • Last night was the best sleep I’ve had in 6 weeks! We have a longer walk for those nocturnal tinkles but it’s worth it! The mom was trying to cajole the toddler but it wasn’t working. I felt sorry for her except that it made for an rattling lunch.

  14. Noisy restaurants take the joy out of eating for me. As a result, we tend to eat at home most of the time . . .

Next time the contractors get to noisy, find an empty chapel somewhere. Quiet chapels offer a sanctuary to believers and non-believers. 😀

And congrats on being back in your bedroom. That’s gotta be a nice feeling after 6 weeks “on the road.”

  15. So glad you’re back in your bedroom. Must of had a hotel feeling in your own house.

Isn’t it amazing August 1 is Thursday? What happened Kate. It was just Memorial Day. sigh

Here’s to that slice with nails on a blackboard on the side. As for coffee my own drug of choice, I honestly think if more people liked it as much as we do, it could change the world, sip by sip. Have a great week.

  16. I don’t understand why dentists, at least in our area, only work Monday – Thursday. And then you can’t get an appointment for ages. Sigh. So glad the renovation is winding down. I hope the reunion is fun!

    • Our dentist is a popular one. We started with him when he was just out of dentist school and over the last 15 years, his practice has exploded. Another dentist works with him but she only works one day a week and I got in with her. I think he takes off Wednesdays rather than Fridays.
