Random 5 for November 27, 2023 – Food, hearing aids, shopping, basics, bloggers’ woes

Sayonara turkey! – I made my (hopefully) last turkey breast this week. We are not turkey fans in this family (except for Gracie my poultry loving cat). I make it so rarely that I’m never sure how. I have a relatively new range and it runs hot so it was a little overdone (that means dry!). I could work to refine my temps and timing but since no one is a fan, I’ll make something else (and work on refining the temps for that).

Those dang ear thingies – Still working on getting used to having what feels like a 747 in my ear. Jury is out. More to come (along with whining and gnashing of teeth!).

Black Friday? – It wasn’t so black here. I had a few items I “needed” to buy so I thought I’d wait to see if anything was on sale. Nope. Nada! I could have bought a ton of things I didn’t need for cheaper but not anything I needed. What’s with that? I also bought the only pair of shoes that was not on sale at my local department store. (Strange saying that as there aren’t many of those left!)

Well there was one thing – I found underwear on sale. Not the pretty fancy stuff. The everyday nude colored workhorse variety so I bought some. That wasn’t exciting. It’s like getting white athletic socks for Christmas.

A short whine for bloggers – WordPress has made some changes. It takes more clicks to access a post from the reader. What’s with that? Easier and quicker should be the goal but somehow this must make it better for commercial blogs. What about those of us who like to post utter nonsense for free?

So how was your week?

  1. Not a fan of turkey? It’s the only meat I actually miss! At least Gracie enjoyed it. Happy belated Thanksgiving. I’ve been without Wi-Fi for the past week and trying to catch up now. I am surprised how little I can accomplish without WiFi! Didn’t realize how much I depend on it.

  2. WordPress needs a good smack. I think they all smoke pot and screw around with us on purpose. A hunch.

Black Friday here was scary. The flatscreen TVs that came out of Best Buy in succession was amazing. Took 4 people to carry one. I did get a pair’a pants at the Gap, 40 % off and aged waiting in line to pay for them. You’d think they’d have more cashiers in play but nope…they made you pay one way or another. i think I may have seen your cats on line. Are they wearing hoodies by any chance? 🙂

  3. Hi, Kate – I usually ignore Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. But today, Cyber Monday, I wanted to pick up a couple of items for an upcoming Christmas party. I found exactly what I wanted and then discovered that both pieces were 40% off!! <#

    • Score! Earlier last week I found a pair of shoes that I really liked and they fit so I bought them! At FULL price! I was annoyed with myself that I didn’t wait but I wasn’t sure when I’d get back to the store and there was only one in my size.

  4. WordPress has been completely nuts-o lately. For instance, as I and commenting on your post, it looks very similar to the blocks I see when I write a post on my blog. Crazy. If I wasn’t familiar with the WP platform, I think I’d be a bit confused. Why is that a good thing? I also can’t comment on several Blogger blogs I follow so it’s not just WP, I guess.

Thanksgiving was pretty low-key here. We got all the turkey and fixings from Costco and it was pretty good. I’d prefer dark meat, but the turkey breast was tasty.

    • I should check with our local Costco to see if they do that but I’m intent not to do turkey again! Yes on WP. That’s exactly what I see too and if I don’t click in the block (after clicking the reply button) it won’t enter. So….no multiple clicks instead of one.

  5. WP has also made it more difficult to leave comments on all the blogs. I have to suffer through a screen that wants me to follow all blogs in their Reader system. I don’t want to do that, so I “x” out of it… but every stinking time it is there.

  6. I’m sure Gracie didn’t think the turkey was dry! I avoid black Friday shopping these days. I used to enjoy it but age has changed me. I’m wiser and can tell that most deals aren’t really a deal. I just relax at home instead.

    • It’s been a long time since I shopped on Black Friday and I never was all that into it. Usually they have 2 of the biggest deal and some of the rest is just junk they bring in for the sale. Maybe if you are buying toys it’s a good deal but those days are long over too.

  7. We had Thanksgiving at Daughter #2’s house. She cooked beef, which was delicious. The pie, apple and pumpkin, was even better. I sort of missed the turkey, though, so I ordered a turkey sandwich the next day for lunch. We skipped shopping on Black Friday and instead visited a boat museum and took a couple of walks under a blue sky. Our lovely weather was unusual around here for Thanksgiving.

  8. I kept hearing on the national business report that Black Friday was subdued this year, taken over by Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday. Hmm. WP changed how you do Categories and Tags. I made my selections, when it posted it came out “Uncategorized” and a few tags were missing. Tried to send a fun story about a Labradoodle who ran away with the neighbor’s turkey on Thanksgiving to a fellow blogger who is blind and has a mischievous Labradoodle service dog … nope, no can do – I put in my WP credentials, couldn’t log on and couldn’t find where to search for her blog on the area that used to show whom I follow. No words.

  9. I am not a turkey fan either, but I like the stuffing and veggies. My mom and I shopped Black Friday and scored some good deals on toys.

  10. We had the full Thanksgiving menu, but my daughter did a lot of the cooking. It was delicious, and I had the land turkey salad sandwich today. Sorry about the hearing aids. I put mine in after I shower in the morning and avoid all the breakfast noises. Maybe they are turned too high, and you need them a little lower. Hope you get them to where you can live with them. All shopping was done here online, and most have already been delivered. I remember the days of heading to the mall to ‘shop,’ but haven’t done that in years. As for WordPress, I get over one problem, and another one pops up. We definitely aren’t their target audience.

    • I wasn’t out shopping either although I did a few things on-line (like underwear!). Still working on aids and how they work for me. The first thing I do when I put them in is turn them down a notch. We are definitely not WP’s target audience. They don’t make money (or not much) off of us.

  11. We do homemade noodles and chicken all in one pot for Thanksgiving plus all the sides. Next year just the sides we love and no poultry of any kind. We used Better Than Bouillon in the pot of chicken and noodles this year. Not using that again. It had the oddest taste… kinda ruined the meal for us. I will stick to Swanson’s chicken stock.
If we are going to talk underwear… I will stick to my Jockey hipsters and mens boxers! TMI?
    Wordpress needs an exorcist!

    • Boxers? hmmmm…..exorcist? definitely! I like hte idea of chicken and noodles. Next year I will either get a rotisserie chicken or a very small ham. For us too, it’s not really about the meat! It’s more of a sides holiday with dessert. I made a pumpkin dump dessert and it was interesting. We all liked it and it was easier than pumpkin pie.

  12. Kate, I say we break away and do something different for Thanksgiving too! And no dressing. I’m thinking of enchiladas for Christmas or I might give up cooking. I hope the hearing aids get better.; Husband had a hard time getting used to his. WP is challenging!

    • That’s bad news about your husbands aids. Hoping these work out. They are not like contact lenses. I can feel them and after a while, they get annoying. Also if I need to wear ear plugs (for my computer) I have to take them out. I already decided I don’t need to hear the morning sounds (emptying out the dishwasher, banging doors and squeaky floors) so I wait until closer to noon when I might have people interaction. I really on want them for conversation and TV/movies.

  13. I know what you mean about turkey – Dave and I don’t really like it, so we never bother. But we hosted this year, and my brother and SIL do like turkey, so I did make it. No idea what I was doing, so I just read the directions on the package and hoped for the best. It actually worked out OK! But I’m not in a hurry to do another one 🙂

    • I followed directions but our oven runs hot so I should have cut back the temp. Anyhow it’s gone now and hopefully we won’t see it back. One of our local grocery stores will offer a boneless half turkey breast that is marinated and that is tasty but $$$.

  14. Yeah, I hate having to do the multiple clicks. And some I can’t read on WP, but I can’t comment on the blog itself, so I have to go back to the reader in order to comment. Very frustrating. So do you sleep better now that your hearing is not so acute?

  15. It’s a shame about WP but it’s even more of a shame that they just do all those changes without telling WP-ers about them so we learn about them when people complain they can’t see our blog posts! What’s with that? Oh well…..We are turkey people and the one we had this year was epic. It was just plain yummy. I will say that I am more fond of stuffing and green bean casserole than I am of the turkey BUT I like a good feast when I get one! No Black Friday buying for me – I’ve got most of my Christmas shopping done early this year.

    Hugs, Pam

  16. Yes! What about those of us who post nonsense for free?!? I do hate the turn WordPress has taken over the past decade. I am trying to get on board with accessing blogs I used to get emails from via this Jetpack app instead but I miss those reminders in my Inbox that someone has posted. Happy belated Thanksgiving, Kate!

  17. Hi Kate, it’s been a good week here. Maya was 2 on Friday and we took her out for lunch (any excuse not to cook these days). She also had a cupcake and was very refined and dignified in eating it. Next week sees a vet appointment for nail clipping. She’s not going to like that and we remember Barney when four of us grabbed a leg each and moved 90 degrees at a time to get the job done.
Hope you get used to the hearing aids soon.

  18. We just get our entire Thanksgiving meal from a local restaurant. We picked it up at noon on Thursday, hot and ready to serve, and had a nice dinner with plenty of leftovers. My kind of Thanksgiving – giving thanks for someone else cooking. And the changes in WP suck.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I used to love to cook (notice the past tense). Each year I go into it excited and exit exhausted. The veggies were great. Getting the meal from a restaurant is a great idea! We have some grocery stores who will make it but you pick it up the day before and reheat.

  19. WordPress has made it harder for me to comment on many blogs. Some blogs, it’s easy peasy. Others, it’s like getting into Fort Knox.

It just isn’t as user friendly.

We haven’t cooked a turkey in 13+ years. Our Thanksgiving is “just the sides, ma’am. Just the sides.”

    Liked by 1 person

    • It’s the sides that make Thanksgiving for me. I only make my mother’s stuffing recipe once a year (I have two extra portions frozen). My sweet potatoes were outstanding this year. I can do without meat because it only takes up room that the “sides” need! 🙂 WP…sigh…another beef is that it’s not uniform. For some blogs, I have to do a two click to read. For some commenting is the pits. I’ve been getting duplicate comments here so I assume people are having issues too.
