Our old pond in fall decor!

Onslaught of bad news – Last night and this morning have brought bad news. A friend who rescues and nurtures very young kittens lost one and has another litter very ill. A blogging friend’s husband had a bad reaction to a shot. Both ended up at an ER – one for animals and one for people. Hugs to all. I know the hubby will pull through but not sure about the kittens. Too young and too small for a robust immune system. Fingers crossed. They have gotten this far so maybe…

But that’s not all – Salmonella has made a run through our neighborhood. One person has been hospitalized (yes it’s that serious). There must be some bad juju going on.

Back at the ranch – We are in a rainy system. It rained all day yesterday and today looks like a repeat. It’s cold and dreary but I’m not complaining. There is something about a peaceful rain that is soothing (as long as it doesn’t go on forever!). Makes me yearn for soup.

The real end of summer – Our local corn shed (which is really a very nice farm market and not a “shed”) is closing for the season. This is the true end of summer (at least for the beloved husband!). I will miss the farm-fresh fruit and veggies and the beloved husband will miss the fresh corn.

About them apples – It’s apple time and I love apples. They don’t love me back. At a minimum, I have to peel them (yes I know about the nutrition in the skins – tell that to my GI system!), but I still have to be careful. I can no longer eat a whole raw one without some discomfort. Getting old ain’t for sissies and it’s not just about wrinkles!

  3. Hope the kittens survived – I follow a woman who runs a dog grooming salon, but does so much more. She started an organization for people who can’t afford to have pets spayed/neutered, or the series of shots for puppies/kittens, but also gets people or organizations to donate food for pet owners in a temporary bind and can’t feed their pets. Along the way this organization called “PAWER” (Providing Animals With Emergency Resources) started taking in newborn kittens. She had 24 of them recently and she posts pics of volunteers giving them eyedroppers or small bottles of milk, or bigger ones eating some kind of “mush” to sustain them until they are old enough for kitten food. Often it’s people whose cat has kittens and they drop off the kittens at her shop, or in one case the mama cat was killed by a car and someone found the very young kittens. Most of them survive. Those babies are so tiny!

  8. Sorry for all the bad news. The kittens are just heartbreaking. My husband is trying to find and buy an apple cider press now. We love apples, too. My stomach has never been able to digest much, so old age won’t really change my eating habits. Sadly, I just can’t eat much anyway.

  11. I’m sorry that your friends are experiencing bad news. Thank goodness for people who rescue animals, but I imagine there is a lot of heartbreak doing that.

    I’ll miss fresh corn but I’m looking forward to apple season. That picture of your former backyard is beautiful I bet you miss that view (but maybe not all the work 🙂 ).

    • There is something wonderful about fall fruits. You hit the nail on the head with the pond! My friend is just wonderful at animal rescue. She has fostered some dogs with issues too. The kittens are hard because they didn’t have a chance to live. You have to remember the successes when you are doing that or you go nuts.

  13. We had a little rain today. It left the leaves in my patio looking fresh and shiny. I love apples, any variety will do. I’ve been thinking about apples crisp or apple bread.

  14. So sad. I hope the kittens will recover. Also hope your friend’s husband is ok. Beautiful photo of the pond. The leaves are starting to change here. We have cool mornings, then hot afternoons. You are lucky to have the rain. We sure need it.

  15. I’m really sorry to hear about the kitties as well as your friend’s husband being so ill. I have so many friends with illnesses and occasional hospitalizations. I think it’s a statistical factor in being older, and that’s humbling. Getting older isn’t for sissies, that’s for sure. Your climate and the description you share of Autumn sound lovely. Soup weather, yes. We are still a little too hot for me to get too excited, but the stores do their best hawking all things pumpkin, and that’s something! Hope you have a good week–and health in your own home!

  19. Oh, so sad for the kitties. I hope they pull through Kate, or at least some of them.
    Salmonella is no joke and I hope no-one in your household is affected.
    A friend brought me round two lovely naval oranges but I couldn’t accept them as they are a trigger for migraine. Nice to be thought of though. Apples and loads of fresh fruit always remind me of my Dad and his wine. He made some good rocket fuel, aka happy juice!

  21. Yikes on the salmonella….I can’t eat a “raw” apple but apple pie and my stomach are dear friends thankfully. Sorry about the cat rescuer – it’s a rewarding, kind, special thing to do rescuing but sadly there seem to be a lot of losses since some of the “rescued” are from horrible situations where they had “two strikes against them” in the first place. Bless her……..We’ve had buckets of rain lately – finally today the sun came out…..for about an hour then went back into hiding. Oh well – Fall is truly falling.

    • Animal rescue is not for the weak of heart. She’s turned around quite a few kittens and moms this year. Still raining here. Very fallish for sure. Unfortunately it rained out our local Celtic festival. Fall activities are iffy!

  22. Hubby found McIntoshes this week at the Farmer’s Market. It’s the little things. I could totally go for soup, too. My fall prep is a little different than yours–got new cushions for the backyard swing as September/ October are the hot months. This year November will probably be warm, too.

  24. Sorry to hear about the illness and hope everyone recovers. I love apples too, but I’m at a point where I have to peel them also. At least we get the delicious taste. 🙂 Our apple crops are diminished this year because of the last May frost. The weather sure keeps us on our toes.
