In the spring, we had a robin try to make a home in the structure of the pergola on the deck level. We caught it early (before eggs) and convinced the lovely couple to find a residence elsewhere. There is too much people activity on the deck.
Over this past weekend we were cleaning out the patio under the deck in preparation for a reunion on Saturday (the lower level is a better location for a group of people). In the spring there was a nest in the understructure of the deck. I let it go but I never saw any birds. No eggs or chirpy babies so I thought it was a reject nest. We rarely use the patio under the deck so I don’t care and we wouldn’t bother them if they were there.
Yesterday the beloved husband was doing more cleaning on the patio and there was a lot of homebuilding going on. There was a pile of sticks on the patio (a bird version of Home Depot) and all sorts of plant stuff hanging down from the beams. Argh. More nests. There are at least three new ones.
We’re not sure if a male bird is offering variety to his honey or there’s a group moving in. Maybe a rocking robin rock band with the groupies. We haven’t seen the birds but the makings look a lot like what the robins did in the spring. We may have bird guests at our reunion. Hope they like people! It will be peopley!
Note to self: Put worms on the food list for the reunion.

That is a lot of activity! I hope that they are OK with all the peopleness!

They survived. The robin was off the nest for the 6 hours or so that we had guests but she went right back on it afterward. Make me feel better.

I have put up with several bird nest messes that are anything but convenient, but I’m so caught up in the “miracle” of their instinctual care for their babies, and I am willing to accommodate. Your birds have chosen a very lovely home to grace with their nest. They know a good thing when they scope out property! 😉

I don’t mind that they “chose” me but there will be a lot of people around the nesting site. Not sure if they will abandon it or come back after everyone leaves.

As long as they don’t come swooping down on all of you!

Birds are ingenious about building nests. Hoping all of your guests get along with each other. Happy Weekend!

Still haven’t seen any birds but the nests are huge! Maybe it’s a pterodactyl!

Primo avian real estate you got going on there. Because clearly you need more critters to worry about!

It seems a birdy could not get the nest just right! At least nest season should be over soon. Have a wonderful reunion tomorrow. I hope you have nice weather!

It’s the rain I’m worried about about. The weather folks are hedging on it.

Nice hotel for birds you got going there! We have one tree that houses a ton, we refer to it as the bird condo. Have a wonderful reunion.

At our last house we had a stacked stone wall on the backside of the pond. There were so many chipmunk homes in there we called that the chippie condo! They know a good gig when they see it!

How adorable! Chipmunks are the cutest.

Oh no! I hope the birds and the people can coexist. You may want to give your guests hooded raincoats just in case 🙂 Have a great reunion (and don’t forget to take notes so you can share the juicy stories with your blogging pals.)

So far when I’ve been down there I haven’t seen any birds. I don’t know if they abandoned them or are waiting for us to leave. Even when I’m in the house, I don’t see activity there but there are nests!

It does look like they are planning on a reunion too. 🙂 Hope yours goes well.

Thanks! Maybe they are building a resort. I have a birdbath that is well used. Doggone robins get it all muddy when they are making nests.

Robins are innovative all right! Yesterday the handyman cleaned the gutters and I said “crossing my finger you can take down the contraption I stuffed in the elbow of the coach light which sure looks awful.” Now I have to check that spot daily just in case, someone starts a nest. You’re welcome to my bag of mealworms!

The robins seem to do ok around here. Lots of stuff to eat.

Ours do well too, especially with all the rain we’ve had lately – they are in their glory now.

I keep a close watch for nests on my balcony. First year I lived here I didn’t and had two nests. Had to keep the cats inside. They drove me crazy meowing and scratching and climbing curtains.

We had the deck work going on so there was too many people around for nest building. This year it’s gangbusters!

They love you, too!!! It’s always a pain when they try to build nests too close around activity, but they have only so many choices, I guess.

Not really. I back up to a wooded area with tons of wonderful trees to use.

Probably. Like the deer.

They certainly prefer your wood structures to the available trees. Maybe they’ll make themselves scarce once the people count starts moving upward. I enjoyed the humor tucked into the post. 🙂

I was just down there cleaning and moving furniture. No bird in sight. Not sure what’s going on. I’m blaming it on the neighbor cat.

Hi, Kate – I believe there is a sign that tells birds, mice and wildlife that your place is animal friendly! Enjoy your reunion!! 😀

Definitely! The deer came in to eat my hostas last night just in time for the reunion. Wish they would have waited a week!

As usual, you are dealing with things that come up with good humor. I laughed that your grocery list now includes worms for the birds.
Hope the reunion will be a great one.

Well……that’s quite a little community there. I do think you should charge HOA fees.

Thinking about it….I haven’t seen any birds down there so I’m not sure what’s going on. We have a hunter cat next door that is capable of getting up there. We saw her trying to climb our skinny maple with the bird nest. She’s quite the hunter.

Multi-family housing for birds? Sounds like modern millennial-type birdies. That or the permitted process in your area is tougher than you’d expect.

Wow, an entire neighborhood of nests! Maybe they’ll build a Starbucks on the corner for you. 😉 BTW, my husband and I now use your term “too peopley.” We went to a specialty store over the weekend (my fave oil & vinegar place) and couldn’t find a parking spot because there was a festival going on that we hadn’t expected. We had to walk through crowds to get there, and all I could think about was your saying, “it’s too peopley.” 😁

🙂 I have a specialty vinegar store I love too. Lately I’ve been buying on line. They let you sample and I walk out with too many different varieties. I have a chocolate balsamic I haven’t opened yet. Yum!

My vinegar store stopped letting us taste since covid. And I’ve been known to take home many flavors in the past, too. Perhaps it’s better I can’t taste them, because I just come home with my favorite one now. Good thing you can order online for the same reason. 😉

They stopped for a while but started the testing again. Yes, it’s a problem. I try to keep to my same favorites — traditional dark and lemon.

Can’t wait to see how this story develops! We had baby bunnies in our front yard recently and they graduated the nest and went off, but this morning there was a rabbit in our yard with a mouth full of stuff…methinks another nest is on the way.

I’m surprised that the dogs don’t deter them! We had a nest in the maple tree next to the deck this spring too. This must be the northeast version of The Villages for birds.

Oh the dogs definitely disturbed them. Ace got one baby before we knew they were there. After that we were very careful taking the dogs out, always on leash anyway, and we kept them clear of that area.

Animals know where they’re welcome, and Kate’s house is at the top of their list. Maybe they’re building one of those new complexes where everything is convenient, and you barely have to leave your nest?

Lasts night we had deer on the patio (which is under the deck). They ate the big hosta plant down to the nubs. They couldn’t wait until next week, after the reunion!

they say with the birds the luck comes to you… we have two nests , now visitors have to deal with the dogs why the berd-force throws bombs at them… maybe a weird variation of if you step in poo good luck comes to you?
