My brother occasionally sends me goofy emails. You know the kind, lots of silly stuff that you will never use or need to know. However, this week he outdid himself. He actually sent me the answer to a problem I have been wrestling with for a long time…at least I think it’s a long time…it’s more than a week anyhow. That problem is memory loss.
It started when I was younger but I don’t remember when. At first I assumed it was because I was overwhelmed with stuff – work stuff, home stuff, how to make my hair nicer stuff. You know the drill. Then I retired and there wasn’t any work stuff (and my hair was the same) but I still had occasional memory loss although I don’t know how often or what it was I forgot.
I shared this with friends who said that they had it too but also didn’t know how long. Phew! I felt so much better. That is until today. Now I am on top of the world! Here is the text from his message:
Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what it was? Turns out, doors are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what’s known as an Event Boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale.
Thank goodness for studies like this. It’s not our age, it’s that darn door! (BTW did I send this to you already?)
I feel so renewed. It’s as if I’m ten years younger. I am having the beloved husband remove all the doors from our home. It’s cheaper than medication!
Thanks bro!
This explains why I suddenly remember what I forgot when I return to the room I’d been in. A moment of total recall and clarity. Thank you, Kate. If it weren’t for the alligators, I’d remove all our doors right now. 🙂

A most interesting post, especially about the doors.

Yes! If you can’t blame the cats, blame the door!

I blame my memory loss on “the Silence” from Doctor Who. Creepy creatures but the are effective…what was I talking about again?
Good story Kate.

Many many thanks to your brother who found this lovely explanation for memory loss. I’m delighted to know that when I’m outside my memory is tarp as a shack since there are no doors! 🙂 LOL!

Sure, I can go with that explanation. Probably why open concept houses are so popular now. The fewer the doors, the smarter you are. Makes perfect sense. Sort of.

I happen to walk into the door – BAM total memory lost 😆 – I like yours better

That is extreme doorway stress! It’s easier to just walk through and forget.
