The Sugar Shack

Ready for the foundation inspection

If you read my blog on stuff you will know that I am trying to downsize and streamline. In an effort to “neaten up” the garage, the beloved husband decided to build a storage shed.  You know the kind that they sell at Home Depot. However, the ones at Home Depot were not built to his standards and of course, he could do it at half the price. Thanks to Tracy, it was christened the “Sugar Shack.” Her husband also built a shed of some sort last winter so she knows about such matters.  You need to have an official name so that you can praise it or mock it, whichever is appropriate at the moment.

First, the timing stinks.  It is October and getting cold and rainy. He has about six weeks to put this thing up before the weather turns major nasty to work outside. Then there is the zoning and inspection angle. If you buy a shed, you just have it put up. If you build a shed you need a permit and inspections.  There is no plumbing or electricity and it’s an 8’ x 10’ shed but it still needs inspections.

The beloved husband has not built a structure from scratch in a long time.  I think the last time was a garage in the 80s, so there was a modified learning curve. The first crisis was where to get the concrete blocks needed for a foundation and how to properly ground it so it doesn’t fly away with Dorothy and Toto at the first sign of wind. That was more than a few trips to Home Depot and Lowe’s. On each trip I looked lovingly at the already built sheds at the corner of the parking lot but it didn’t work. My sadness did result in a trip to Starbucks to bring back the happy Kate.

After the foundation is complete, it requires the “foundation inspection.” Believe me, it’s a bunch of crummy cement blocks in a row with wood on top. Refer to top photo. What’s to inspect? None the less, he will probably lose the better part of a week on this stage.

My biggest concern with the whole project is that in the end, we will accumulate more “stuff” but it won’t be quite as visible. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

The best part is since this project has been christened, this song keeps going round and round in my head and it brings back really good memories! See if it doesn’t infect your weekend!

  1. ♫ ♪ Shu-shu-shu-shu shugar shack ♪ ♫ love that song! I’ve been trying to get my hubby to place a few pavers at the edge of our patio to place the bbq on. It has turned into such a big project that I have stopped mentioning it, out of fear that it will become an entirely new patio. It think it is the modern day version of “me – caveman!”

  2. My husband wasn’t satisfied with a Home Depot version either. When he “poured” a foundation, I got a little worried. “Not that big,” he said, “Don’t worry.” We have a two-and-a-half car “shed” with a loft.

  3. Oh, your beloved will be investing so much personal pride in the shack. Just be careful about the kind of sugar that gets “stored” in there….wink wink!

  4. you big meanie….now I can’t get that song out of my head. ha ha ha
But at least it’s replacing one that has been driving me crazy all week. Elvis Presley’s “There’s nothing quite as pretty as Mary in the morning…….” Now YOU take that one and hum along. And I don’t even know all the words.
TERRIFIC post though. Good luck with this….sugar shack
