An odd week – This past week was spent getting ready for this coming week. Several activities have strangely come together at the same time or overlapped. (I like to agonize over each event separately!) Gracie’s surgery tomorrow conflicts with a really nice luncheon I won’t enjoy as I will be worried.
How did this happen? – When I worked, I had multiple stuff going on all the time. Work stuff, social stuff, cat stuff. It never bothered me. I just went to wherever my calendar told me to be. Perhaps that’s called living in the moment. I seem to have lost that magic.
Old memories – This December is full of medical appointments for me, the beloved husband and the cats. It reminds me of long ago when my cancer diagnosis came in December and so did the surgeries, then the yearly follow-ups. Somehow a few yearlies have again ended up in December. They don’t start out like that but each year they slide just a bit and before you know it you have a skin surgery and a colonoscopy a few days before Christmas. (Yes, that happened but not in the same year. The colonoscopy was Christmas eve. Seriously? I know you are saying so why did you schedule then? The short answer is that was the only available date until the end of January)
But the good stuff – I’m walking with my walking buddy this week. Seems like ages. She will be full of news. So will I. We lost another fellow exerciser in the past month. Dropping like flies!
Done, done, done – We’ve completed putting up the Christmas decorations so we can donate more of what didn’t fit or work here. That will lighten the load considerably. I had decorations from three different houses. Our neighborhood does not do the candle in the window thing so those are history too.
So how was your week?
I like your old tree – it looks festive. Now a skinnier tree. 🙂 Next year I will put something up … this year just a few touches only. I hope Gracie is feeling better. I saw you wrote today but will write more about Gracie on Friday. Poor kitty … we’ll hear if you caved on the cone.

Oh god yes! That cone came off the minute she was in the house and was put in storage. First off, she didn’t need it. She doesn’t paw at her mouth. Second, she couldn’t eat with it on and there was no way she was going to let me put it back on her anyway. I’ve had dentals on lots of cats, never once did a vet say to use a cone/collar. This is a young vet and I think it’s a default decision rather than a thoughtful one.

Did they do dissolving stitches on the gums where the teeth were removed? That’s the only reason I would think there would be the young vet’s concerns. Poor Gracie was probably so glad to eat again, she didn’t think of anything else.

I don’t know if they did stitches. That was never in the conversation.

It must not have happened then. I was thinking of my wisdom teeth extractions – the teeth were impacted and I had stitches.

You are so on top of things. I have tons of decorations I am too overwhelmed to sort through and get rid of. I guess I keep hoping I will use them again. Good luck to Gracie. Hope it all goes well.

I’ve been carrying decorations from house to house just in case. This is it. Next stop nursing home so it’s time. Dropped Gracie off this morning. She wasn’t a happy camper. Made me neurotic too.

You could still do the candles in the window. Those always look pretty. Praying all goes well for Gracie tomorrow. And I hope you and your husband’s upcoming appointments go well too.

Our appointments are easy ones, just annoying. Gracie went in this morning. Very unhappy hungry cat! The window candles look best when the whole section does them. We don’t have enough front windows to make an impact so it’s not worth the trouble.

I don’t understand why, if you want candles in the window you would not do so. Such a welcoming thing. I would have loved to do candles, but we don’t have window sills! Tried suction cups and well it was a disaster!

We have too few front windows to make an impact so it would be fussing for nothing. There are other things that would work better at this house.

I enjoyed your post, knowing we can both worry competently.
David and I took Lise to the airport this afternoon, and we are going to sleep well tonight after her 2.5 week visit. She has lots of energy and doesn’t mind scheduling 20 things a day. She accomplished a lot.

It’s always nice to have your decorations up – everything feel so much more festive! I am still working and I already bitterly resent having to do multiple things in a day. Hope your luncheon is nice in spite of everything!

When I worked, it was especially nice to come home to candles in the windows and lights in the neighborhood. When all that stops in January, it’s really dark and sad.

I agree! A lot of place in Anchorage leave their lights up all winter, which I like. Unfortunately our HOA makes us take everything down shortly after Christmas.

My husband tried to get an appointment for his colonoscopy on Christmas Eve Day, but it was already booked. I get why you did what you did. Our Christmas decorations are up and minimal and I am happy.

Yep, he figured that after it was over on Christmas Eve he could all the things. No calorie counting. Just consume, consume, consume.

I enjoy doing the candles in the windows and did them Nov 1. The candles and Mom’s ceramic Christmas tree is all the decorating we do. I might break down and put something festive on the front porch. I am sending good thoughts for Gracie’s procedure and quick recovery vibes too. Enjoy your luncheon, it sounds like such a festive thing to do for the Christmas season.

I’d rather have lunch with friends than do most anything else for Christmas. I like the candles too but we only have two front windows and a huge picture window partially hidden by a tree. Probably not worth the trouble although if the connecting neighbors would have done it, we would have attempted it.

I really do not enjoy evening events, whether it’s soccer practice, dinner meetings, or late doctors appointments. I just want to be done for the day and not have to worry about getting anywhere else. But now we’re getting into all the holiday dinners, parties, light shows, etc. Alas for getting into my pjs and sitting in a chair.

On top of preferring to relax in front of the fire, we don’t drive well in the dark. Where we live now is more rural so no street lights. Makes a difference. There are two sweet spots in the day for me. In the morning with my mocha in front of my computer and after dinner, catching up on Jeopardy or something else.

I’m not retired, but an empty-nester. With two years of not going much of anywhere during COVID, I learned to stop rushing. It felt SO GOOD! Now, nothing can make me rush. That’s an energy and habit I just don’t need. So that’s my take no no more multitasking, and no more having lots of appointments in one day!

That’s how I try to live. If something upsets the applecart, I’m downright cranky!

I completely understand how we lose (or, maybe, happily give up) the ability to juggle a full calendar when we retire. If I have more than two things scheduled in a week, I get twitchy.
Sending good vibes for Gracie’s surgery. I know you worry but I’m sure she’ll be fine once she gets back home.

I can understand that you might have some anxiety about Gracie being kept overnight at the vet’s office, but she will be in a place where she can be taken care of – just in case – and you won’t have to wonder if any way she behaves seems to be a sign of a problem.

Yes that all makes sense in my head. It doesn’t transfer to my heart. The last 2 times I’ve taken a cat to a vet for non-standard exams, I’ve ended up with dead cats. It haunts me. there is no reason to believe that will happen to Gracie. Other than a runny ear, she’s in good health and they will clean her ear while she’s under. Hoping there’s not a polyp for something in there.

Teddy sends POTP to Gracie. I’m happy to say tree is up, decorations inside and out almost done and all gifts purchased and under the tree or in stockings hung by the chimney with care (!). Now we just enjoy it all (we hope). I have a pile of medical stuff coming in January but December is FREE and EASY for a change. Enjoy your lunch tomorrow – Gracie will be just fine!
Hugs, Pam

Luncheon is on Tuesday so I can’t pick her up until afterward. Hopefully I’ll feel better once I get the call after the surgery. She’s had a dental before but they have talked this one up to the point that I’m anxious about it.

I’ve done the candle in the window thing for years. I got them out this year counted up the three batteries per candle and decided who cares. Kind of freeing to do less. Hope the surgery goes well.

Ours were plug-ins so if we wanted to use here we would have had to re-configure out the electrical cords. Since no one else is doing it, I don’t feel the pressure. I tried the battery operated ones once long ago and they only lasted 3 hours.

As a surgical coordinator, I scheduled a few holiday procedures. Almost no one would take these dates, which is why they are always available, but there is nothing before or after. They were always scheduled by women for the same reason. “So I don’t have to do anything.” Well played, ladies, well played. It always gave me a chuckle.
All the best with Gracie tomorrow. Try to enjoy your lunch, knowing Gracie is in qualified, loving hands.

The colonoscopy is more disruptive prior to the procedure but I did have to go through Christmas with a bandaged nose. Typically we don’t have a busy Christmas as most events are earlier in December or after Christmas. The year I had breast surgery during the Christmas holidays, I said I wasn’t doing anything. Somehow the family dinner ended up at my house but I didn’t do the cooking. Sort of a score!

I used to be able to multitask as far as things to be done during the day, but not so much since we semi-retired. If I have more than a meager few things on my to-do list for the day it feels like too much now. These would have been quiet days in the past!
