Capris in a nice safe color!

I was looking to snag some sales on summer tops. I’m a small size. They sell out fast. I stay on top of sales at my favorite stores on-line. I don’t need bottoms but always cruise those too just in case there is something I like for cheap.

There was a pair of capri pants in an unusual color. Unusual means that the tops I currently own will not work with it. Still I’m intrigued. (Usually I buy it, try to match it up, it doesn’t work, then return it. I haven’t learned that lesson to stick with the classic colors.)

And so it happened. I found a pair of capris in a color they called tawny rose. I love rose-pink colors. Tawny means there is some brown in it and that doesn’t go with the bright pink summer tops I have but I am not daunted.

I’m buying on-line so I go to the review. (Don’t you just love reviews? Interesting, sometimes salty, rarely helpful yet we hang on every word!)

First one up says she has a dromedary issue with it. I spit my coffee out on my computer.

For you newbies out there who didn’t spit your coffee out, that means that the front rise seam is short and gives you a “frontal wedgie” commonly called camel toe. It’s both uncomfortable and unattractive. Reading more reviews, it seems to be a problem with the style although no one else called it a dromedary issue. Someone noted that it’s overly fitted through the glutes (I know! Doesn’t anyone speak English anymore? What’s wrong with tight in the butt?). I passed on it.

I looked at one other pair of long pants on sale. One reviewer said it puddles at the hem. Does that mean it’s too long? I don’t think puddling hems are in style. They would get dirty fast!

I successfully bought four new tops in delightful colors that work with what I have although I’m yearning for that pair of dromedary challenged tawny rose capris.

  4. It was so much easier when clothing sizes wee standard and always the same. Now with stuff made everywhere, the fits and sizing varies so much it’s frustrating. When I was in overload while working during my last job, I did get to where I was able to order specific brand and style form one store, but then that brand suddenly got so bad everyone was complaining about their inconsistent sizing – and I got tried of returning misfits. Eventually I did find a source was reliable – most of the time.
    I’ve heard the stores are now swamped with all that clothing that was stuck at the docks – and have started dramatically marking stuff down – along with TJ Max benefitting and being loaded with their first rate merchandise. I used to run in Steinmart, but had tampered off on that before the pandemic. (That was where I’d always find some lovely to die for, pretty colored plants…that never would match anything I already had…hard to pass those up!)

    • When we had a Steinmart, they were always good for colorful clothes. Sadly, they closed shop here. I used to get Lee’s jeans all the time. Then they changed. I’ve been buying LL Beans’ jeans the last few years and that’s been successful. We have a local store so that makes trying on a breeze and returns if you ordered on-line easy.

  6. Pants are more of a challenge to order online. I try to order some similar to others I have and like from the same brand. The reviews for clothes seem to vary widely. For other things, I read the negative comments first and then decide if it is worth reading positive ones.

  8. That’s hilarious. You should have gotten them just to see if the review was accurate! I love capris. I wish the simple slim tops they wore in the 60s with them would come back in style too. I would love to buy those! Ah, the pitfalls of online shopping.

    • It all depends on your body type. Some reviewers loved them. I love capris too. Bermuda shorts don’t end at a good spot and I’m not much for shorts anymore. I loved a lot of the old styles. Crops make me look like I have my mom’s clothing on.

  9. I fortunately put my coffee aside before I started to read… hahahaha…. I love reviews, specially at amazon…. my fav was: not good, got hemorrhoids!!! it was for a dip tray and I have no clue how this could happen….

    • I do too and if I stay with the same manufacturers I can usually figure out the fit. Since I often have to buy on-line even if there is a local store, I try on the stocked sizes to get an idea of the fit. It didn’t use to be so hard. I miss local department stores!

  11. I like to read the reviews too for anything I buy online. Perfect-fitting pants for me, at 5′ 9″ tall, was a challenge for years. Before they made them in tall sizes, I made my own pants so I didn’t look like I was waiting for the floods. I was happy they started making tall sizes in trouser-like styles for work clothes. I’ve seen the “dromedary issues” pictures trending on Twitter from time to time, usually a celebrity in skintight pants and a photographer with his zoom lens that makes it look pretty unflattering. Puddling pants to me would be like long drapes that puddle on the floor?

    • But doesn’t that mean the pants are too long? Puddled pants would be trip hazard! Believe it or not, I sympathize with your pant length issue. Although short, I have a 30″ inseam. One manufacturer that I love makes their regular at 29-1/2″ (although they say it’s 30″, it’s not) and that half inch made a difference. I tried getting a tall and shortening but the overall fit was different — longer rise, more dropped hipline. I stopped getting pants there for a long time. Now I can buy their jeans without issue.

      • I just Googled those pants and they are actually dragging on the floor … like you, I figured that meant pants dragging on the floor like puddle curtains. Very dangerous. One picture was “yoga puddle sweatpants” – that makes no sense! We had elephant bells back in the day (high school years for me) and my parents finally relented and said I could get a pair, but not the ones that ballooned out excessively at the bottom as they were not paying for a trip-and-fall and breaking a bone.

        The tall-size pants fit okay for trouser-style pants, but as regular cut pants or capris, I had the same issue with the long rise and it didn’t fit right. I think my preferred inseam size was 31 and then I could wear a bit of a heel, otherwise it had to be flats. The first law firm I worked for we had a dress code. The second law firm had no dress code (except no denim jeans), so I started buying more casual pants and capris and long skirts with ballet-style tops after years of dressing up in suits every day.

  12. Other than a few leggings, I don’t think I’ve ever purchased pants online. Tops? No problem. I like to try pants on for fit and feel first and I hate returning anything through the mail. I have to laugh when I see pants advertised as “perfect fitting.” For who? We come in all different shapes and sizes… how can a pair of pants be “perfect fitting” for everyone? Loved “dromedary issue.”

    • I only buy pants from manufacturers that I have bought from before. Otherwise it’s just too hard. I like good fitting clothes and I’m not necessarily a standard size. I’m also finding that sizes differ wildly even with the same manufacturer. I can take a size 6 with one company and a size 0 with another. I love the pants with stretch. More forgiving and comfortable.

  13. Breathe deeply and find your center. From here find your own zen fashion calm … it only takes a few deep breaths and finding the courage to explore new websites.
    I used to be a TJMaxx junkie. I would meet with a girlfriend and siff through the bargains and offerings. Now it’s a whole new world at your digital fingertips, with free returns and no judgment.

  16. OMG, I’m laughing hysterically. It should be LOLH. I was just reading reviews on some new herbal supplements I’m thinking of trying for some health issues. I don’t know why when I’ve always believed our health needs are individual. Our bodies are unique, so what makes me think any review will help? 🤷‍♀️ Guess I needed some encouragement.😕

  18. “I miss being young and WANTING to go shopping.” ~ That says it all for me 🙂 I can’t make myself go to a real life store because I am still pretty nervous over The Plague. But things sure have calmed down now. I can go to Publix, Lowes, Target and most other stores without a mask. It is so nice to breathe! Did you give into your yearning for the tawny rose capris? Can’t help but ask!

    • Not yet. Hopefully they will be sold out of my size when I get a weak moment! If I need anything, I should buy a pair of tan capris/crops/whatevs. They will go with a lot. Shopping used to be therapy for me. Miss that. I’d go for a whole day of trying on stuff at my favorite stores. Sometimes I didn’t buy anything but I’d have some upscale pizza and maybe a mocha and I’d have a great day!

  19. LOL on the dromedary issue. Nicely put.

    I think we’re all going to be stuck buying online again soon. A nurse I know was adamant: “Monkeypox means no trying on clothes in a store. You’re gonna need to wash them first.”

  20. Oh my! Dromedary issue is a really clever way of saying the bottoms give you a camel toe 🤣. Puddles at the hem? Doesn’t that mean the pants are too long for that person and need hemming? Not something I would complain about.

  21. I love reading reviews…..”dromedary issue” is a new one on me but after your explanation I totally get it. I have to order pretty much everything on line – only one store here in our small town other than WalMart (which works for SOME things) and that’s a Marshalls. I can pretty much rely on a couple of online places for the most accurate sizing but I do miss the old “try on” rooms in REAL stores.

    • I miss being young and WANTING to go shopping. Now it’s more of a chore but I like nice clothes so I need to. We used to have a local department store (sadly it closed) where I could pick up my size but it gets more difficult as inventory gets cut back. There are a few boutiques (like Chico’s) around who carry the really small sizes just not in the local stores.

  22. Dromedary issue?? OMD…that is totally hilarious! Gotta give that reviewer a 👍🏻 Yeah, some reviews are helpful, others not so much. I try to be candid and informative whenever I post an online review; guess I need to up my vocabulary to include entertaining as well. LOL

  23. I abhor shopping for clothing in general! I look through tops at the thrift stores if it’s a store that puts them together by size and not by color (one of our Goodwill stores does that and I won’t even look!). I wander through the clothing at Walmart if I’m there for another reason. Honestly, I’m such a homebody that a t-shirt and shorts work for summer and a t-shirt and sweats work for winter. I have plenty of clothing to wear in public for the little bit of being in public I do. Good luck with the capri pants and I hope you enjoy getting chuckles from online reviews.

    • I’m a very small size so there is no hope of getting anything at a Thrift store and I abhor Walmart’s for any shopping at all. Maybe it’s just our local store but I hate it. I usually buy a few new tees for summer and sweatshirts for winter. They get shabby and I get bored so it’s all good.

    • I prefer to try them on too. I only buy on-line from 3 stores that have local brick and mortar stores. I can see things I like but often have to buy my size on line. I really don’t like mailing back returns so I stick with those that have local stores. If the front rise is cut short, there are some woman that it won’t work for. A larger size makes everything else larger too.
